GOES TO SLEEP ON TRACK; BODY IS HORRIBLY MANGLED
Charles
Chase, age 18 years, of
Kansas City,
Missouri was instantly killed Tuesday morning at the "narrows" four miles east of
Wray when a passenger train struck him and mangled his body almost beyond recognition.
Chase in company with two other youths,
Emmet Shared and Robert
Stetler, were "bumming" their way from
Kansas City to
Denver. They were put off the train at
Laird and started to walk to
Wray. Becoming fatigued, they lay beside the track to rest. They dropped off to sleep. When Chase's companions awoke they called to him but received no reply. Thinking their companion too sleepy to answer Shared and
Stetler again dropped off to sleep.
With the coming of dawn the boys awoke and looked for
Chase. They found a portion of his body about 300 yards distant from where they slept.
