Charles Carroll Piatt

Mr. Charles Carroll Piatt, one of the citizens of our city, died at his late residence on Thursday afternoon, June 9, 1910.

Mr. Piatt had been ailing since last winter, but hopes were entertained of his recovery and his death came as a shock to his family and friends.

Mr. Piatt was one of the pioneers of the county, coming to this vicinity in 1882 from the state of Kansas. Mr. Piatt belonged to a large family, there being eleven children in his father’s household. Originally the Piatts lives if France and were Huguenots, who had to flee from their home country on account of religious persecution. Mr. Piatt was born near Columbus, Ohio April 12, 1848, and when a boy removed with his parents to Shelby County, Indiana. Later he went to Kansas and wet to farming on his own account. When a resident of Kansas he was a member of an organization of scouts who were fighting Indians on the frontier, and narrowly escaped with is life in one of the expeditions against them. {Battle of Beechers Island}

For about twenty eight years Mr. Piatt has resided in Cooperstown and the vicinity, and was a very successful farmer and an industrious and upright man. He was devoted to his family and was a good citizen. He leaves to mourn his departure, his widow, three sons and four daughters, two brothers and one sister. The funeral service was held at the Congregational church on Saturday at 1:30, conducted by the pastor. There was a large attendance of old friends and neighbors who turned out to pay their tribute of respect to one of the pioneers this county.

Mr. Piatt at the time of his death was in the 63rd year of his age.

Chas Piatt was my GGF.
One correction: Should read "Shelby County, IL" not "IN."
His mother is buried in Shelby County, IL.
