Hello Frank - thank you so much for the info on John Ifinger. I had no idea that Lorena Weir was related to him as a step-daughter or that she gave piano lessons. I do have the Flume newspaper articles on the John Hoover hanging, which was when the mob took the keys from Ifinger in the middle of the night. Definitely wild times then! Thanks from Christie

He was taken to the jail, Emeline was in night clothes and bare feet following. The mob finally broke the locks, the keys were in his pocket. The persom in jail had pled quilty to manslaughter, but the townspeople did not agree.
Sounds like interesting times.
Frank
I'm looking for information on John Ifinger, his wife Emeline and her daughter, Lorena Weir, who all lived in Victor from approx. 1910-1920. John was a retired sheriff from neighboring Park County, CO. and died in 1920 at the age of 82. He is buried at Sunnyside Cemetery along with his wife. (The 1920 census erroneously lists their last name as "Henger.")
Thanks for any help!

Dear Tim,
I read in genforum.genealogy.com, that you know something about the Lohrstorfer family.
My name is Edwin Loherstorfer, I'm living in Gießen in Germany.
I’d like to add more information to the genealogy of the Loh(e)rstorfer family.
My father's ancestors come from Ortenburg in Bavaria. My grandfahter, who died in 1953 told my father, that one branch of the Loherstorfer family emigrated went to the US some 100 years ago. I think, it must have been Frederick Loherstorfer, who was born in 1932 in Ortenburg and arrived in an US harbor about 1852. Originally the former ancestors had to flee from a not precisely specified region near Salzburg in Austria, because of their faith as Protestants, in 1620 to Ortenburg, whose count was a Protestant too.
I would be very pleased hearing from you, so that I could tell you more about the Loherstorfer family in Germany, which has not more than some 100 members.
Kind regards,
Edwin
e-mail: Loherstorfer@t-online.de
Isobel and my g-grandmother Bridget were two of at least eight children of Francis Shovlin and Nancy “Annie” McGlinchey. (Francis was also the son of a Francis Shovlin from Kilclooney.) The area near Ardara where they were born was called Sandfield and the house no longer stands although th remains are there. Their mother Nancy was still living in the 1911 census.

Daniel, Patrick and Ignatius Craig were born in the townland of Malin Beg, Parish of Glencolumbkille, Co. Donegal, Ireland. All three brother apear in the 1900 Census of Goldfield, CO. Their parents were Ignatius (b. abt 1816) and Bridget McGinley (b. abt. 1817).

Ingnatius retured to Malin Beg. He is listed in the 1911 Census of Malin Beg as being single and living with his brother's, James, family.

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Donegal/Mal...

In the 1910 census of Butte, MT Bella Craig is running a boarding house that is occupied by many individuals from Glencolumbkille. Bella died in 1929.

Craig relations of these three brothers still live in Malin Beg.

I would be interested if anyone knew Bella's maiden name. If she came from Glencolumbkille? Was Bella's name Shovlin? Shovlin is a common south west Donegal name.

Mike Maloney

I did not find any Duquette's in Colorado in 1900, at least none that matched this pair of brothers. In 1910 there is a William Duquette, wife Helma, daughter Phenchion (age 6) living in Pueblo Co. CO. Helma appears to be William's second wife. Helma was born in Sweden, Phenchion in Colorado. William was 38, Helma 29, and they had been married 8 years. Lee Roy does not appear to be living anywhere in the area, unless he was written up as LeRoy and it didn't come up in the search returns. William was born in MI.

In 1920 this family is in El Paso Co., Precinct 58. The daughter's name is now spelled "Fanchon," and another daughter, Bernice, age 8, has been added to the family.

In 1930 I can find Hilma living in San Bernadino, CA with daughter Bernice, who has married a Roger C. Bale. Bernice is 19, was married at age 17, and has a 4 month old son named Buford. Hilma is a widow.

Going to the USGenWeb page for El Paso County, I find Duquette's buried in the Evergreen Cemetery:

John M., buried 2 March 1922
Lee Roy, buried 1 Jan 1915
William H., buried 17 Aug 1934

Was Hilma really a widow in 1930 and this was a mis-transcription, or was she really separated/divorced?

The URL for El Paso Co. USGenWeb page is
http://hometownchronicles.com/co/elpaso/

Their burial records are on findagrave.com as well. John Duquette was born in 1841, according to their records. No birthdate for Lee Roy, and William was born in 1873 in Michigan.

Hope this helps. I didn't look for John Duquette, and as it's now midnight and past my bedtime, I will have to check for him tomorrow.

Also, locate the El Paso County Message Board if you haven't already done so, and ask if there's anyone who can look up obituaries for you. Several years ago I did this for my own Colorado Springs family and a kind lady found obituaries for me.

H. Duquette at Glen Eyrie. Paralysis was the cause of death. He is survived by his mother who is superintendant of the Iowa State School for the Deaf and Dumb at Council Bluffs, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Able of Lincoln, Neb. The funeral will be held this morning at 10 o'clock from the Gairley's chapel, Rev. George Stunts of Colorado City officiating.
I have found in an old city directory of the early 1900s that the district hospital in Victor was located on Diamond Street between 4th and 5th. I know there was also a hotel around there named the Oxford. I recently was up there and on Diamond Street was a large building which is now labeled the Gold Club. Does anyone know if that building had been the hospital?
Thanks,
Dave

I found a book online at the web site for Pikes Peak Library District, Special Collections in the 1905 Carnegie Library http://rmoa.unm.edu/docviewer.php?docId=cocppmss0166.xml

Collection Summary
Title Albert E. Carlton - William K. Gillett, Correspondence
Dates (Inclusive) 1896-1916
Abstract Correspondence consisting primarily of letters, memos, and telegrams between Albert E. Carlton of the Colorado Trading and Transfer Company and William K. Gillett of the Midland Terminal Railway Company largely concerning railway and trading company business in what is now Teller and El Paso Counties, Colorado. Items date from December, 1896 to May 1916, with the bulk of the correspondence occurring between 1896 and 1902.
Collection Number MSS 0166
Size 2 boxes (.8 cubic feet)

There is a notation as follows:

"W. K. Gillett was auditor of the Midland Terminal Railway when it received its name in 1893. He became the major stockholder and in 1898 became president and general manager, a position he held until 1905. The town of Gillett, Colorado, through which the railroad ran, was named for him, as was the first Midland Terminal Railway engine, #1."

I think this will answer your question.
Eellitta

In the Cripple Creek District Directory of 1900, the following paragraph is by way of introduction:

"A nicely located town on the Midland Terminal railroad, five miles northwest of Cripple Creek by wagon road and ten miles north of Victor by railroad. The location of large ore reduction works and the home of many miners and prospectors. Gillett has good churches, schools and public improvements. From the names given below 1,200 people would be a fair estimate of population."

There are no listings for Gillet in the directory, other than various businesses. I have not been able to find anything on the founder of the town at this point. Teller County has only been in existance since 1899.

Neugie Davis Shawl was the daughter of Oscar Solomon Davis. Oscar Solomon was the son of Solomon Frank Davis Sr. and Sarah Ann Seder. Neugie probably contacted your uncle back when she was gathering information for a booklet she put together about the Davis-Seder family.

Are you a descendant of Nancy Davis, daughter of Simon Peter Davis and Mary? Do you have Mary's maiden name as Cease? Do you show that Simon Peter and Mary had 10 children?

Hello Jim,

I have done some research on the Mary Davis that you mention, and I believe that she is an ancestor of my husband. Do you show that Mary (nee Cease) was the wife of Simon Peter Davis? My husband descends through their son, Solomon "Sol" Davis. I also show Mary's mother as Phoebe Bennett but don't have positive proof of this.

If you are interested, I would like to exchange further information.

Robyn

Ralph

Not to change the thread. Do you live in the area?
I have family buried in the area. Was there last summer and wanted to get a picture of the gravesite. I thought my contact would be there to direct me but he had turned his records over to the city. They were in the process of organizing the records. I had ER in my notes and had forgotten it stood for Elk Rest. Anyway did not find the graves on that trip. I wondered if you were available to take additional pictures.
"Teller County, Colorado, church & cemetery records" by Carol Loudermilk-Edwards.
Elk's Rest is just a section of the Victor Cemetery Sunnyside Cemetery, Victor:

007 014 O'ROURKE, Mary E.
Born: 3 SEP 1907 Died: 11 JUN 1909
007 016 O'ROURKE, Roger T.
Born: 1902 Died: 1914
008 012 O'ROURKE, Willie P.
Born: 17 DEC 1886 Died: 27 AUG 1897
Inscription: Rock of Ages Life Love Truth
Comments: Shares marker with Simon O'ROURKE
** ER 008 012 O'ROURKE, Simon
Born: 1859 Died: 1904
Inscription: Rock of Ages Life Love Truth
Comments: Shares marker with Willie P.
Hello Robyn,

Since posting this I have determined that the Mary Davis buried in Mt Pisgah Cemetery is my great-great-grandmother. I was able to detemine (through censuses) that she and the three youngest kids had moved to Cripple Creek area approx 1890-95.

The connection to Horace Bennett never did work out. Couldn't find any evidence.

Now to Solomon. I have a note from my late Uncle saying he he had correspondence in 1980 with a Mrs. Joseph W. Shawl (age 63 then), nee Neugie Davis, whose grandfather, Salomon F. Davis was a younger brother of Nancy (oldest daughter of Mary Davis). Does this name ring a bell?

Jim

My gg grandfather Harvey Anway came to Colorado City (now part of Colorado Springs) in 1865. A few years later he acquired a farm near Florissant, that was the post office for his letters. He lived there until 1880-81, and perhaps later, but he married his third wife in Ohio in 1881. Is there any way to locate his farm? There is a historical marker in Colorado Springs where he lived there, but I would like to locate his land near Florissant, and visit it if possible. I live in Alabama, so visiting the librairies there will only be possible at a later time.

You should first do a search of the land patent records at http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ You will see that there are two listings for Harvey Anway. He owned land in Sections 31, 32 and 33, 320 acres in all. In Block #33 his land was in both Teller and Park County.

Then go to website http://www.esg.montana.edu/gl/trs-data.html

Put in the following information
Drag down menu to show Colorado, Sixth Principal Media
Township 12
Drag Down menu to show South
Range 71
Drag down menu to show West
Section 31
SUBMIT

This will give you information of the area as well as places nearby. The closest nearby place is the Riverside Campground to help you locate Block 31.

In the third paragraph, look for the blue letters that says Switch to Terra Server. Click on those words. Then click on the Topo Map in the upper right hand corner. You will see the block #31 about in the middle. That is Harvey's land section. Blocks 32 and 33 are to the right of this block. A section is 640 acres, he had 160, or 1/4th of the section of block 31 in the Northeast corner. If you click the "in" button to zoom in you will see the names of nearby places. You will see the words Pumping Station in this area of Harvey's land.

Another good site for help in reading a land patent survey is \http://nationalatlas.gov/articles/boundaries/a_plss.html

I hope this helps you to locate the area that he ownes.
Eellitta

Does anyone know who the town of Gillett, Colorado was named after?

Family tradition says John W. GILLETT "Went to the gold fields of Colorado by 1860 and was never heard from again." Could he be the town father?

Would appreciate any reference to the naming of Gillett, Colorado.

Marla,
The library at CRIPPLE CREEK-VICTOR HIGH SCHOOL maintains the records that are available. They have a web site and email addresses for individuals----ie super--principal, but I don't think there is an email for the library itself. I'm not sure exactly how they offer their research,
Their mailing address is:
410 North B Street
Cripple Creek, CO 80813
phone # (719) 689-2661

I'm sorry I don't have the phone number directly to the library. Having the last names of who you're interested in will likely be needed.
Good luck.
Bonnie King
