I am searching for any persons with the last names of Townsend, Conell or Connell, Stone, and Newell that lived in Cripple Creek (Teller County) Colorado in the mid to late 1800's. Some specific names are Mortimore J. Stone (1842 - 1910); Jesse Conell (Connell) Stone (1862 - 1922); Bertrand William Townsend (June 23, 1869 in Joliet IL - Jan 7, 1935 in California) married Sybell Newell Stone Townsend (July 28, 1879 Caribou CO - Mar 24, 1924 California); Pappy Newell; Nanna Conell (Connell) Newell. Any assistance is great.

Now to add a twist. On a recent visit to Cripple Creek I stumbled across an interesting situation. I found a reference to Jesse Strong who ran a "bording house", madam of a house of "ill repute." I was also told that the women in this profession often changed their names to protect their true identity from their families. The similarites are too close to ignore. If anyone has any information on Jesse Strong, it would be appreciated. I viewed the phone listings for 1902-3 and she was listed along with her business.

Thanks All
Lisa

Al,

Thank you for your response. Although none of the first names match anything we have, I am sure there is probably some link. Any information you have is appreciated.

If this account is still active...

I am looking for James and Nellie O'Connell (m. in Ironton 1887) in the following CO mining communities. I believe we have emailed before.

Victor
Cripple Creek
Ironton

James used to check on gold and silver content for veins uncovered in mining ops and would then send results to the newspapers.
