Vanadium colorado was a mill and settlement west of Telluride and east of Sawpit on what is now hwy 145 and Silver pick rd not near Silverton.
The mill processed the vanadium mined in the area.
There was a James Post that worked at the Bear Creek Mine and was a shipper of Uranium and Vanadium in the Gypsum Valley in the early 20's.He was in partnership with Homer hart and Jim Short of Sawpit for several years.
On the Telluride Museum website you can research 1600 historical photos a search box alows for advanced search.

The only confirmation I have is from the 1920 Census for Placerville, CO. My G Uncle James W Post is listed as one of the miners of vanadium. His WWI Draft Registration from 1917 shows him working for Primos Chemical Company Bear Creek Mine Vanadium, Colorado. My G_Father Clarence Marvin Post joined his brother aaround 1919-1920 he married the camp cook's daughter and movd to Ohio.
"James moved to Orange, California and continued working with the development of uranium extraction from vanadium" On one trip back to visit his brother in Ohio he brought a sample of what he was working with in an orangy colored bottle. The posibility of extracting uranium from the vanadium was closer to the 30's.

Since you say the mine closed down in 1923 I would assume that the company may have relocated to California.

I will try to access the Denver library.

What would you like to know?

Very little has ever been published on this mill and it's history. What has been published has been lots of assumption that it was part of the carnotite processing for the WWII bombs. My research has shown that it milled roscoelite from the area for its Vanadium content. The main mine(s) were up what is now called Silver Pick Rd. It was in an experimental form from about 1905 until 1909. It went through various changes from 1909 thru 1920. It gathered ore from many claims in the area once the main mines started to "play out". My information ends in 1923. There are pictures dated up to 1939 but it appears, and has been noted, as closed. I think the mill never worked after 1920, but I could be wrong.

There was a town across the river. Some old photos and the 1922 Sanborn map show it as having some size. I was there last summer and vaguely remember a couple houses across the river. I was interested in the mill and mine so never took any photos or paid much attention.

The denver public library has photos in their image database of the mill. It's accessable via the web.

If you have any information about your uncles time there, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

Sorry,

No photos of the mill or mine. I would definately be interested in any info you would like to share. My G_Uncle moved on to California. He continued to work with "vanadium" "urainium" in California. I am not sure if the company relocated there or not.

Hi,

(I stumbled upon this thread via Google)

Vanadium, CO is/was on highway 145 between Sawpit and the turn off to Telluride. The present intersection is hwy 145 and Silver Pick Road. It used to be called Newmire, CO. The name changed around 1913. There isn't much there now. On the west side of the river there are a few houses, I think. On the east side is where the mill was and is presently a cleanup site. The Mill was operated between (roughly) 1905 and 1920. Primos Chemical leased/ran it from the early teens until 1920. I've been researching the mill for years.

I was wondering if any of you had any information or photos of this mill from your ancestors?

Craig.

It has been 2 years since this was posted. I recently came across my g_uncle James William Post who I knew was working the vanadium mines in Colorado. The particular location is in the Teluride census of 1920. It is near Silverton, Colorado. The particular mine that he was in is identified on his WWI Registration for 1917. "Primos Chemical CO."

"Bear Creek Mine" Vanadium, Colo

I know you probably have this info by now, but perhaps it will help.

If you can, try to find Allen Nossaman's Many More Mountains, Vol. 1: Silverton's Roots (Denver, Colo.: Sundance Publications, Limited, 1989). This book has become a collectors' item, but may have been recently re-printed since Allen's death. It contains many references in the index to the Greene & Co. Smelter, John J. Epley, George Greene (with an e at the end), Edward Greene, and Newton A. Foss; also color photos of the smelter location. This volume, the first of three, concentrates on the earliest exploration of Baker's Park and Silverton.

Also, try the San Juan County Historical Society (http://www.silvertonhistoricsociety.org/)-- fabulous group that performs miracles in their tiny place. Allen Nossaman, the author of the above, was one of the founders. They buy and preserve a many of the old mining sites and their museum and historical archive practically sit on Cement Creek. Someone there can probably answer your questions.

Hello again Laura,

Your Montana angle may be worth pursuing.

Her uncle John Prout may have moved there:
"Johnny Prout and his wife left last week for the world's fair, where they will visit for awhile, and then go to Butte, Mont., where they will probably make their home." (Silverton Standard and The Miner (Silverton, Colorado: various publishers, 1875 - ), issue of 21 Aug 1915).

I have not been able to find him in Montana in the 1920 census, though. And, I'm not sure how this fits with his later residence in Long Beach, California.

I have thought that the most likely place to look for Florence after 1921 would be in Michigan, particularly Houghton County. John Prout probably originally immigrated there (before Silverton), and he was back there mining for a few months later. Sampson Rosenberg, Florence's half-uncle, lived there through at least 1920 (he was in Wisconsin in 1930). Mary Emma Prout (Elizabeth Prout's older sister) had two of her Hocking children in Michigan.

Do you know how this uncle John Prout fits into the family? I don't think he's a son of Robert and Mary (Trezise) Rosenberg, do you?

Pat Bausman

Hi Laura, I'm evesdropping on this conversation. My husband is Gail Munyon's sister's grandson and I am researching this family. I know the answer to your question:

"Mrs. Gail Munyon and little daughter left Monday for Long Beach, Calif., where they will spend the winter. We hope to see them back in the spring" (Silverton Standard and The Miner (Silverton, Colorado: various publishers, 1875 - ), issue of 17 Sep 1921).

This was a few months after Gail Munyon's death and she most likely took daughter June with her, since she was just an infant (June was born in Long Beach in 1920 while Gail and Florence were on an extended vacation). Daughter Iris was left with Gail's mother Mina (Brown)(Munyon)(Powers) Snyder. Presumably, Florence was going to visit her uncle John Prout, but this isn't clear. This is the last record we have seen for Florence. However, we (Iris's family and my husband's family) know that, at some point, June also wound up with her grandmother Mina in Silverton.

In the summer of 1923, Mina moved to Los Angeles. She brought with her three grandchildren: Iris and June Munyon, Gail and Florence's girls, and Willard George Bausman, my father-in-law. Jessie (Munyon) Harwood, Gail's widowed sister, also moved to Los Angeles around then. Florence was gone by this time and we have never found any further record of her. Mina raised all three of her grandchildren (who are all now deceased); she died in Los Angeles in 1945.

Hope this helps, Pat Bausman

Florence Lilian Prout - question for Frank Paige

First, let's just say that Laura Rosenberg's recent messages have really been interesting, to me (my husband is a descendant of Gail Munyon's sister Alta (Munyon) Bausman) and to Florence (Prout) Munyon's grandson, Jeff Kalb. We have really been trying to track this woman since she disappeared from Silverton ca. 1922. We here had no idea that she had a child in England prior to her emigration.

My question - Frank - how are you associated with the Munyons? Your last message sounded like you know something about the SW Colo. Munyons. We are very interested in this family and I have done much research on Gail and Alta Munyon's ancestry. Maybe we can help each other?

Our Munyon line:
Thomas and Deborah Ann (--) Munyon
Thomas and (probably) Sarah Ann Gordon
Henry and Eliza (Brandenburgh) Munyon
Edward John, aka Jack, aka E. J., aka John and Mina (Brown) Munyon
Gail Munyon, Alta G. (Munyon) Bausman, and Jessie M. (Munyon) Harwood (siblings)
Iris Munyon and June Carlyle (aka Alta June) Munyon (daughters of Gail and Florence)

If you have any information on possible descendants or marriages, I would be grateful.

Regards,
Petra Merkel

Cement Creek

George Green and his son Edward, along with John Johnson Epley, formed Greene & Co and built the first smelter in the southwestern country on cement creek in June 1874. Having transported the equipment to Del Norte, and then by wagon over the long and difficult journey into Baker's Park. By Oct of that year, they produced the first silver brick, brought out by Epley and Prof. N. A. Foss. This smelter later coming part of the San Juan Smelting company of Durango. (N.A. Foss also operating a smelter on Henson creek in Hinsdale Co)

Was Cement Creek the same creek as it is today that empties into the Animas river near Silverton? Or was the earlier Cement Creek name in 1874 including a longer stretch of the Animas River which may have extended all the way into Durango?

How large of an area was Baker's Park? Both Baker's Bridge near Durango and Baker's Park (now Silverton) were named after Charles Baker...so did Baker's Park encompass this whole area?

I'm trying to determine the location of this smelter, and with only these names to go by, it's hard to pin down the location 'from these early years.'

Any suggestions on where to possibly locate the corporation papers for Greene & Co appreciated.

Nyana,
I do not believe that there was a city/town by that name. There were mines over a wide spread area that mined Vanadium.
I believe you would have better luck searching the area he was in in 1920. And then searching the county records around that time.
Good Hunting,
Frank

Harry S Little 1858-1939? looking for info

Looking for personal information on Harry S Little, miner, originally from Pittsburgh PA, who is known to have been in the Eureka / Silverton / San Juan County area from about 1885 to at least into the 1910s.

Although I have not yet been able to find a census listing for him in 1900, 1910, or 1930 (I believe that I have found him in 1920 living in Saguache County), the Colorado Historical Newspaper site has notations that place him in this area during this time frame.

I believe that I have found his burial at Del Norte Cemetery in Rio Grande County under the name of Henry S Little, with a burial year of 1939. This matches the minute information that the family has had for him - that he went to Del Norte and died in 1939. I had Vital Records do a death certificate search about 10 years ago and came up empty, but at the time, I thought that he had died in Rio Grande County - I'm now considering having a statewide search done.

I'm hoping to locate an obit or any article that would positively identify this Harry S Little as the one in my line - a son of David & Elizabeth Little of Pittsburgh PA who 'went west' about 1880. He also worked with Christian W Ihmsen who was killed in a snowslide in February 1900 just north of Eureka - the Colorado papers have some interesting articles on this. I have an article from a Saginaw MI paper where several of the Little brothers were worried that Harry might have been lost in the same accident.

Hi Lana -

Thanks so much for replying with this information. I had seen Edmund Hill listed in an online index from the "The Story of Hillside Cemetery" but have not been able to find a copy to see if there was more information in the book. Thanks so much.

-peg

hi Justin:

alarger library would probably carry the book...try denver or another large city...maybe your library has a lending program w/ a larger library somewhere in the state and then you could borrow book.

book is expensive, I know...it's more of a coffee table sized research book..that's why it costs so much..

good luck!
roger
