I am looking for any info that references—
--a September 1879 event known as the White River
UTE Indian massacre at the Nathan C. Meeker agency in
Rio Blanco County,
Colorado and the subsequent capture of Mrs. Arvilla
Meeker, her daughter Miss Josephine
Meeker and Mrs. Flora Ellen
Price and her two children. My uncle Fred
Hans as a US scout was sent by Gen’l
Crook and was involved in locating the captives, and negotiating their release along with agent Charles
Adams. Fred kept diaries during the Indian wars of 1876-1879 (published by the SD Historical Society). One of his diaries contains a list of names of the
Army victims (12) including Major
Thornburg, agency employees and freighters or teamsters. Both diaries also contain many extensive details of this and many other events as well as copies of letters of instruction to Fred
Hans and copies of reports back to his commanding generals including Phil H. Sheridan (in Chicago) who employed Fred
Hans (Jan 1880) “--as his special scout and inspector and to thoroughly investigate the circumstances leading to the “Custer Massacre--”
According to a footnote in my uncle’s diary, an account titled “The
UTE Massacre” by Josephine
Meeker is apparently found in “Philadelphia: Old Franklin Publishing House-1879”
