Maud Thomas was born in Iowa in 1876 to Mary Jane Rhoads and George C. Thomas. Jane died and George remarried. In the 1895 Iowa state census, Maud is living with her father, her stepmother and her brother in Dallas County, Iowa. Then, she disappears.
In 1905, George Thomas died. His probate record indicates that "Maud Wena, Pueblo, Colo." is an heir.
One would think this would be a clue. However, the surname "Wena" is rare to nonexistant. It is quite easy to review the census records of everyone with that surname and determine Maud is not enumerated with them! The name is typed on the papers as well as written several times. That's very clearly what they meant to write. I cannot find a marriage record for Maud Thomas in Iowa or in Colorado. I do have a picture of two young women, one of whom could well be Maud, taken in Pueblo, Colorado.
So I'm leaving this footprint on the off chance that someone will recognize this surname or perhaps recognize what it was supposed to be, and help me find out what happened to Maud, my grandfather's half-sister.
Thanks!
