Holyoke Enterprise, Holyoke, Colorado, June 2, 2011

Howard Lee Hagemann, age 89, was born on their family farm five miles north and one mile west of Holyoke on September 11, 1921, the youngest of four children born to Ernest A. and Ida Mae (Ellis) Hagemann. Howard died May 25, 2011 at Haxtun Hospital.

Howard received his education at Liberty School, which was one mile south of the farm. He completed eight years of schooling in seven years.

After school, he farmed with his brother on the family place until 1941 when he was called to take an Army examination. He was told he couldn’t join because of medical reasons. Howard remembered having rheumatic fever at 9 years of age. He returned to farming until taking a job with Rither Construction building power lines in Nebraska, Kansas and the mountains of Colorado.

After four years away from home, he took a temporary job with Highline Electric in May of 1949. Known only by the name of “H,” Howard retired from Highline Electric in 1977 after almost 30 years of employment.

Howard enjoyed traveling and had visited every state except Maine and Vermont. Howard and his sister Ethel traveled to Lincoln City, Oregon, as this was one of their favorite vacation spots along the Pacific Ocean, and Hawaii.

Howard loved to do wood-working and was an avid reader, having his own library, which he shared with his nephew Dennis.

Howard lived in Holyoke until October 2008 when health issues caused him to move into the Haxtun Elderly Care Unit. He was very involved in all the activities and loved reading to the little children who came to visit. He was known as the Gentle Giant. His smile and humor became a very important part of the ECU where he was loved as much as he loved them.

Howard is preceded in death by his parents; half-brothers Carl and Clarence Hagemann; brother Harold Hagemann and wife Vera; sister Ethel Hagemann; brother-in-law Leonard Gentry; and nephew and fellow Highline employee, Gary Hagemann.

He is survived by his sister, Edith Gentry of Lakewood; nephews and nieces Dennis Hagemann and wife Lynda of Holyoke, Deanna Hagemann of Holyoke, Janice Gentry and Noel Gentry of Lakewood, Clara O’Connor of Holyoke and Dora Ott of Denver; several great nieces and great nephews and great great nieces and great great nephews; and numerous friends.

The funeral service was held May 27 at Gerk Funeral Home in Holyoke with Pastor Kerry Johnson officiating. Interment followed at the Holyoke Cemetery.

Phillip graduated from St. Patrick’s Academy in Sidney, Nebraska and entered seminary in Conception, Missouri, only to find the priesthood was not to be his vocation.

He then moved to San Jose, California, where he met and married Lynn Spangler. They were blessed with a daughter, Carolyn Lee, in 1969.

He worked as a purchaser for IBM until a tragic auto accident nearly took his life. With extensive brain and head injuries, he underwent many months of surgeries and recuperation. He continued to try to work for Litton Industries and later Alaskan Copper, also as a purchaser, but again found he was unable to continue. After all of this, he had to take physical disability retirement.

Phillip moved to Seattle, Washington. However, he was not one to sit and do nothing. He started helping the elderly widows in the neighborhood doing odd jobs and gardening and generally caring for them. They came to be his second family. One of his last concerns was about who would take care of them now.

Phillips was preceded in death by his parents, Alois and Elva Krogmeier; brothers Tom, Gene, Vince and Joseph; and sister Betty.

Phillip is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Sherratt and husband Craig; grandchildren Stephanie and Matthew; brother Bill Krogmeier and wife Elvira; sisters Shirley Krogmeier and Dolores Haskell; sisters-in-law Mary Krogmeier and Jackie Krogmeier, along with many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

The rosary was held February 3 and the funeral Mass was February 4, both at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Holyoke with Father William Jungmann officiating. Interment followed at Holyoke Cemetery.

Holyoke Enterprise, Holyoke, Colorado, March 17, 2011

Mathew Thomas Kropp, 33, of Holyoke, was born September 30, 1977 to Thomas Kropp and Wanda (Kropp) Hassler in Holyoke. He died and was welcomed into the arms of the Lord on March 8, 2011 in Westminster while visiting friends.

Mathew, who was affectionately known to most as “Mat,” was the eldest of three children. Mat was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Holyoke by Pastor Gary Rahe.

As a child Mat had a great love of the outdoors and enjoyed any activity that allowed him to be with others and close to nature. Mat was the ever-vigilant and protective older brother to his siblings, Mark and Kristi, and he continued to play that role throughout his life.

Mat received his education from the Holyoke school system, graduating from Holyoke High School in 1997. In his school years, Mat developed a passion for music by playing the saxophone and piano. Mat had natural appreciation for reading and literature, and his love of books continued to grow for the remainder of his life.

After high school, Mat spent four years at Colorado State University, where he studied psychology and microbiology. Mathew had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and a great interest in science; he always felt his calling and purpose lay in the medical field.

During his years in high school and college he held several positions at local hospitals and worked as much as possible to gain firsthand experience, earning him the nickname “Doogie Howser.”

Mat found joy in numerous activities including golf, computers, talking about politics and current events and was always ready for a good-spirited debate!

Mat enjoyed people and found great pleasure in working with others, no matter if it was in the time he spent in the sales field while working for Colorado Baggage or in medical settings pursuing his love of health and human services. He had a great capacity for compassion and was often known to help others in need. Mat was a true “people person” in every sense.

Mathew’s family and friends and the time he spent with them were among some of his most valued and cherished experiences. He loved the times spent out at the lake boating, having conversations and enjoying the water.

Mat always had a fondness for the city life and all it had to off, and he spent a great deal of time visiting and living in the Denver Metro area, where he made many lifelong friends. Mat’s nephews and nieces were a great source of pride and entertainment; he never wasted an opportunity to share his love of learning and education with them.

Mathew was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Daryl Kropp and Harry Hassler; and a grandmother, Geneva Hassler.

Mathew is survived by his mothers, Wanda Hassler and Lucy Kropp; fathers, Thomas Kropp and Hank Hassler; brother, Mark Kropp and wife Gretchen; sister, Kristi Colglazier and husband Andrew; step-sister, Morgan Peterson; nephews Reece and Keegan; nieces Anessa, Payton, Lawren and Kaitlyn; grandparents, Pat and Sylvia Stockton and Rita Kropp; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

The memorial service was held March 14 at Zion Lutheran Church in Holyoke, with Pastor Gary Rahe officiating.
ALBERT ARTMAN

Holyoke Enterprise, Holyoke, CO, 10 Jun 1926

ALBERT ARTMAN KILLED IN ACCIDENT WITH HORSES
Albert Artman, farmer 20 miles northwest of Holyoke, was killed today when the horses he was working in the field ran away with him, according to a report received here just as we go to press.

The accident occurred late this morning, and he passed away as the result of his injuries at 4:30 this afternoon. No particulars were learned.

FUNERAL OF ALBERT ARTMAN HELD SUNDAY
The funeral of Albert Artman, who died last Thursday afternoon as the result of injuries sustained in a runaway that morning, was held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church in Holyoke. The large church building was crowded with friends who assembled there to pay their last respects to Mr. Artman. The funeral was said to be the largest ever held in Holyoke.

Mr. Artman died as the result of a most unusual accident. Last Thursday morning he hitched an unbroken mule, together with a trustworthy work horse, to a manure spreader, and with a dozen posts and some smooth wire on the spreader, started from the yard to do some fence repairing.

The accident was unseen, but from the tracks examined afterwards it appears that the mule was skittish, and caused the vehicle to strike the gatepost as he was driving out of the yard. Apparently the lugs on the wheel caused it to climb the gatepost, where it overthrew the spreader. Mr. Artman struck ground first, and the posts hit on top of him, according to the conjectures. Then the pulling team, with the posts wedged against the cylinder, threw the entire weight of spreader, posts and their strength against him, and he was badly crushed.

Internal injuries cause his death at about 4:30 Thursday afternoon. A physician was summoned immediately after the accident, but he was unable to save his life.

Albert Artman was the son of Will and Mary Artman, both deceased, and was born in Tell City, Indiana on August 20th, 1888. He died June 10, 1926, at the age of 37 years, 10 months and 21 days, at his home eighteen miles northwest of Holyoke.

Twenty years ago he came to Colorado from Indiana, and soon took a homestead southwest of Holyoke, near the O’Connor place. On July 10, 1910, he was united in marriage to Miss Essa Hayes*. Two children, Opal, 14, and Otis, 10, were born to this union.

Albert Artman was a kind father, a loving husband and a good neighbor. The high opinion of the people of the Holyoke territory toward him was fully attested by the numbers who paid him their last respects Sunday.

*Other records show as Haynes.

Hethcote, who has been a resident of Holyoke for long periods for the past fifteen years, died suddenly Monday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Boyd, at Paoli.

Mr. Hethcote had been ill in California, where he had moved in 1921, and was advised to return to Colorado. His health had seemed improved upon his return to Phillips County , and he was engaged in conversation with F.P. In 1908 he first moved to Holyoke, after a trip to California where he spent several years, and suffered there the loss of his wife. He left Holyoke on two occasions, but made it his home the greater portion of the time until his death.

The funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church, with the Masonic order, of which he had been a member for twenty five years.
Thomas of Sewal, Iowa. To this union was born one child, a daughter, Reta.

The first nine years of married life was spent on a farm near Holyoke, Colorado. In 1918 they moved near Weskan, Kansas, where she spent the remainder of her life. When at Holyoke she became a member of the Royal Neighbors.

Her life was consecrated to God December 13, 1921 when she joined the Methodist church at Weskan, Kansas, taking a prominent part in the Ladies Aid and other church activities.

She was called to that Celestial Home January 20, 1923, at the age of 37 years, 11 months and 5 days.
