GLADYS LEWIS
Gladys Ione Lewis, the daughter of Napoleon and Nancy Jane Hance Pryor, was born April 14, 1896 at Newburg, Missouri. She was the 10th of 11 children. She attended a rural school and high school in the Newburg area.
She attended teacher's college in Arizona at Northern Arizona Normal School, now Arizona State University, to obtain her teacher's certificate, graduating in 1918. She taught at a rural school in Flagstaff for one year before moving to Holyoke in 1919 where she taught first grade.
She met Glen Lewis while she was teaching in Holyoke. They were married on January 18, 1920 in Holyoke. They made their home on a farm southeast of Holyoke where they raised registered Hereford cattle along with their farming. After Glen's death in 1955, Gladys moved to Holyoke where she has continued to make her home.
Gladys enjoyed playing the organ and played for many years for different occasions in the Holyoke area.
She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America for 70 years, a 55-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and organized the Navy Mother's Club during World War II.
Survivors include her son E. Pryor Lewis and wife Gertie Jo of Fort Collins; a daughter Charlotte Thompson of Paradise, California; two granddaughters, and four great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Glen; son-in-law Paul; eight sisters and two brothers.
Gladys passed away at Melissa Memorial Hospital in Holyoke on Thursday, June 13, 1991, at the age of 95.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 17, 1991 at 10 a.m. at the Baptist Church in Holyoke with Pastor Peter J. Peters officiating with burial following in Holyoke Memorial Park
