Hello Maureen - I found an article about Daniel Jennings death, but the cause of death also says alcoholism. I tried to send it as a document attachment but Rootsweb wouldn't let me attach it, so here is the link. The article is in two sections and kind of hard to open so let me know if you want me to send it to you another way. . Click on the article to enlarge it.

http://www.coloradohistoricnewspapers.org/Default/Skins/Colo...

I do a lot of research with this online newspaper database, so if you need anything else, I'd be happy to try to find it. The Fairplay Hotel just recently closed due to bankruptcy I believe - here is a link to a photo of it from 1903 and it was rumored to be haunted.

http://www.hauntedcolorado.net/sitebuilder/images/Fairplay_H... from Christie
thank you for the suggestion. I found the article. It just raises more questions as the article says he died December 19 and the death certificate and our family records say December 26. Perhaps December 26 was the date of the inquest. Just a thought...

Well, family lore is sometimes more exciting than the real thing. The newspaper article says he was 65 yrs old and died from alcoholism. His body was shipped to Columbus, Ohio.
The newspaper article was in the Fairplay Flume, dated 1 Jan. 1904.
You can search the historical newspapers thru the link provided in the other posting.
Good Hunting,
Fraqnk

I saw your posting regarding a murder in Fairplay and the newspaper link you included for another posting. My great grandfather, Daniel Jennings, died in Fairplay on December 26, 1903. the family lore always was that his throat was slit. I got a death certificate that said "alcoholism." Is there anyway to check the newspapers of the time to see if there is any article regarding Daniel's death?

Hello Tony - The Rocky Mountain News newspaper ran quite a series of detailed articles on this murder in 1897, although the spelling of the last name is somewhat different. I can e-mail you a list of the issues these articles were in or you can contact me for more detailed information if you like.

Here is a link to an article that was in the Fairplay Flume newspaper about this:

http://www.coloradohistoricnewspapers.org/Repository/ml.asp?...

from Christie Wright

Dake existed about where Colorado Hwy. 285 and Park County Road 58 intersect. Nothing remains today of the ghost town. Don't believe that there was a cemetery there. Here is something from the book "Guide to the Colorado Ghost Towns and Mining Camps" by Perry Eberhart:
"Dake, about 38 miles northeast of Fairplay, the primary source of charcoal in South Park. It was named for L.H. Dake who owned and operated the Dake charcoal kilns. The town, located on the old Denver & South Park Railroad, thrived during the 1880's and 1890's and had a peak population of 300".
The charcoal produced in Dake was transported by rail for use in Alma and Leadville (probably used by silver mining companies). It's my understanding that all the trees surrounding the area of Dake were cut (hillsides were stripped)to make the charcoal and the town (it was probably more of a camp than a town) died out either because of that, or because of a lessening need for charcoal. I also read somewhere that Dake's water supply was bad -- there's only a tiny spring near the town site but about 2 mi. from the town site was a lake called Dake Lake, also called Reed Reservoir at one time. It can be very windy there, and the elevation is about 10,000 ft -- probably life was really hard there. Closest other settlements -- Webster (another stop on the railroad line), Hall Valley and Handcart Gulch. Hall Valley and Handcart Gulch had upwards of 600 people living there in the late 1800s and those settlements enjoyed a lively (and somewhat lawless) reputation.

Barrett died in Como, Colorado on October 31, 1939. An obit was in the Fairplay Flume on November 2, 1939, although, I was not able to locate it on the historical newspaper website. Also would like to know if his mother and father are buried in the same cemetery. Don't have death dates for them but their names are George W. Barrett and Lucy A.

Spelling was not consistent back then. For Samuel, founder of Hartsel in Park County, it is spelled Hartsell in the 1870 census, and Hartsel in the 1880, 1900, and 1910 census. His father is Hartzel in 1830, Hartsall in 1850 and Hartzel in 1860. His brother George is Hartzell in the 1860 and 1870 census, Hartsill in 1880 and Hartsell in 1900. Brothers William and Joseph are Hartsel in the 1880 Park County census. William is Hartsel in 1900 but Joseph is Hartsell. When searching, I usually try Har* so I get all variations.
I do not think Frank Hartsel is an immediate member of the Jacob Hartsel and Catherine Hartman family.

For Myrtle Louise Hartsel Schoephoester Bryant I have her birthdate from the California Death Index. It gives the following information: Bryant, Louise Hartsel, female, Birth date 4 Dec 1882, Colorado, Death date 12 Apr 1949, Los Angeles, no Social Security #, Mother's maiden name Boone, Father's surname Hartsel. The 1920 census where she is listed as Louise H. Schoephoester has her age as 38. But then the 1930 census has her age as 40. She was a lodger in the same place as Carl L. Bryant, age 38, who became her second husband. Could be the reason for the fact she only aged 2 years between the 1920 and 1930 census.
For Henrietta Stratton Hartsel Donavan I also have from the California Death Index: Donavan, Henrietta Hartsel, female, Birth Date 10 August 1886, Colorado, Death Date, 18 June 1951, Los Angeles, no social security #, Mother's maiden name Boone, Father's surname Hartsel. In the 1920 census she is listed as age 33 and in the 1930 census she is listed as 43.
As for the children of Thomas Cameron and Elizabeth Boon, I have received information from several of their descendants: Dorothea Lange Eckhoff Dorsey (died 2003)granddaughter of son Robert Roland; the gr-granddaughter of son James Bruce who lives in Washington state, and Jean, a mother-in-law of one of Robert Roland's gr-grandsons who lived in the same area as Thomas and Elizabeth did and was researching the Cameron family. I would love to share information offline. Just click on my name on this message board and my email should come up.

My great-great-uncle was also a partner of Lauren Edwin Watkins.
Please e-mail me at gcgresham@msn.com I've also been in communication with Vickie and another Cameron descendent.

It seems that you have done a lot of research and most of it corresponds with mine. I am curious as to the birth dates of two of Samuel Hartsel's daighters--Myrtle and Henrietta. The 1900 census has month the same as your month but the year different. Myrtle born in 1880 and Henrietta born in 1885. Maybe you have another source of information since you have the date of the month, also.

To another subject:
I am trying to sort out the children of Thomas Cameron and Elizabeth Boon. I have the 1870 and 1880 census but it is hard to figure out the order of the children with the correct names. The book 'Under the Angel of Shavano' lists 5 sons and 5 daughters. One of the sons is actually a grandson, Lauren who is my great-grandfather (his mother was Nancy Isabel Cameron and through family legend we think the father was Edward Watkins who was hung for cattle rustling). You have the actual dates and birth places for the children--I would be interested in looking at your sources. I have a James Cameron born about 1861 in some of my info but you do not. Maybe a son that died in infancy or early childhood? There is a James on the 1870 census. This is so confusing for me. Maybe you can shed some light. Thanks

I am the gr-gr-granddaughter of George W. Hartsell, brother of Samuel, founder of Hartsel, Park County, Colorado. This George Hartsell was born and baptized in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1828. The Hartsel family is still in Bucks County for the 1830 census. I cannot find the family in the 1840 census but they are in Allegheny City,(the area in Pittsburgh where Three Rivers Stadium used to be) Allegheny County, Pennsylvania for the 1850 and 1860 census.
George W. Hartsell married Margaret Dill on September 24, 1856 in Sewickley, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. According to his 1895 diary he notes on the March 15 entry that he moved his family from Franklin Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania to Reedsville, Preston County, West Virginia on March 15, 1861. He is in the 1870, 1880, 1900 Preston County, West Virginia census. He died July 11, 1905 and is buried at Reedsville, Preston County, WV.
George and Margaret Dill Hartsell had the following children:
Samuel H. Hartsell, born 1857
Elizabeth Catharine Hartsell, born 1860
Lavina Hartsell, born 1864
David Hartsell, born 1866
Mary Emma Hartsell, born 1870
In 1880 his children Samuel and Elizabeth went to visit their uncle, Samuel Hartsel, at his ranch in Park County, There Elizabeth met her aunt Nancy's youngest brother, Thomas Marion Boone. They married in October 1880 at the Hartsel ranch. They are my gr-grandparents.
I don't have a Scott in my database but find a Scott Hartsel in the 1900 Jackson County, Ohio census. He is the son of Frank and Maggie Hartsel who lived in Ashland. It says he was born in February 1900. He had sisters Cletus and Clara. In the 1920 census he is listed twice. In Mansfield, Richland County, he is listed as son-in-law with wife Fern in the home of James Oppelt. He is also in Ashland, Ashland County, Ohio as head of household with wife Fern. Is this your Scott Hartsel?

Who has information on the tree of George and his descendants - he must be brother or father to Scott.

The order of Samuel Hartsel and Nancy Boon Mayol Hartsel's children is:
Katherine Hartsel born March 12, 1878
Myrtle Louise Hartsel born December 4, 1882
Henrietta Stratton Hartsel born August 10, 1886
Samuel Bancroft Hartsel born September 18, 1888, died 1888. He was first buried in Hartsel, Park County, Colorado but his body was moved to Fairmount Cemetery, Denver, Colorado on August 22, 1910. This is also the cemetery were Samuel and Nancy Hartsel are buried, along with Samuel's mother, Catherine Hartman Hartsell who died in 1873 while visiting her son. She was originally buried in Canon City but her body was moved to Fairmount Cemetery on September 26, 1910.
Hello, I am searching for my ancestors. My grandfather was Charles Pellew who was born in Shanghai, China in 1867, and died and buried in Shanghai, China in 1914. His sister Henrietta Pellew was born in Shanghai, China in 1868, and emmigrated to the States in 1947.She dead in Berkeley of California in 1953. I have found her death certificate in the United States, and they put the name of her father was George Pellew on it. That means my great grandfather George Pellew was from Pellew family went to China from England and married a Chinese woman before 1867. I also found a record in Shanghai Municiple Record Centre that there was another man from Pellew family who was called John Pellew died and buried in Shanghai, China in 1874.
If you have heard any information about my ancestors and above mentioned people, please contact me. Thank you very much.

Hi Lisa,

I would have to say that Mary Zimmerman Williams married Edward Cummings.

On a cd called Colorado Marriages 1858-1939 An Index Compiled by The Denver Public Library c.2004 Colorado Genealogical Society.

Mary G. Williams married Edward Cummings 23 April 1901 registered in El Paso County, CO.

The reason I say it was Edward is there is an Ed Cumming on the 1900 Pume, Park County, CO Census. He is in the same city as Mary. He was born March 1849, the same year as Mary. He was born in Ireland. They both are immagrents. He is also a widow on the 1900 census. He came to America about 1865. He is a prospector.

I hope this helps.

Hi,
You can order death certificates from the state of Colorado from an office in Denver. The Denver library might have obituaries and may do lookups. Sorry I dont know their addresses ...a Google search will find those :)
You can read many of the old Colorado newspapers online at www.aclin.org. I was able to find some info about our ancestors there. The Fairplay Flume , the only Park County newspaper that I know of is online now....have fun and good luck in your search :)

WILLIAMS -- death records

Greetings! My husband and I are reserching his ancestors, and have traced a Mary (Zimmerman) Williams (b. 1849) and her husband, John C. Williams (b. ~1836), to Park County, Colorado. They arrived from KS around 1878 with their six children -- Winnifred, Charles, Albert, Robert, Edmund, and Victor. Between 1885 and 1900, John died in Park County. Mary Williams married a man by the last name of Cummings in 1900. She died in Park County sometime after the 1910 census and before the 1920 census.

We would like to know how to find death record, possible obituaries and such for them.

Thank you!

Lisa

I would like to know if there might be a more complete list of burials in the Fairplay Cemetery, other than what is posted on the Park Co site. I am looking for John T. Richards and Saphronia (Fronia) Richards. There son Fred is shown as buried there, but I cannot find John or Fronia. John was still alive in the 1930 census, but I don't think Fronia was.

Any help is appreciated.

Laurel
