Hey! B. Heeringa! In October 2009 I saw your posting on Rootsweb related to a posting by "lisolettegilcrest". She
posted about a photo she found with the name Carpenter on the back of it. The photo wea taken in La Junta, Colorado in the late 1800s. You indicated in your posting that you would like to see the photo. Did you ever get in contact with her? Did you see the photo? Can you help me get in touch with her? My e-mail is docwisecup@aol.com Please let me know if you made contact and saw the photo. Jim..Ohio

The 1870 census listed her as "Adrianne", so I assumed that "Addie/Adra" were nicknames she used in later years. Thanks for the info on Sarah and Thaxter's 2nd marriage. I'll update my info.

Per family stories, Ezra spent most of his time between 1892-1908 in the mountains (Central City CO) trying to get rich finding gold. He had came to visit his daughter Myrtie Crooks (my gggrandmother) in Buckeye AZ and died there.

Make sure you've seen "Past and present of Dekalb County, Illinois, 1907". On page 273 under the bio of Timothy Ricker, it talks about this marriage to Anstasia Carlton and lists the 10 children of Ezra Carlton Jr & Mary Howland.

Nothing much about the other siblings, but it was nice to get a recorded list of all the siblings (and confirmation that my ggggrandfather Ezra Dexter Carlton & his sister Mary Carlton were twins named after their parents).

Thanks! So nice to "meet" you!

We were in Rocky Ford a while ago and took pictures of the grave markers we could find.

Thaxter/Thaxton is buried as Thaxton W. Carlton in Valley View Cemetery, Rocky Ford, Co., next to his daughters Emma (my gggrand mother), and Osca Simon. Emma's daughter Clida's first child C. Morrow died as an infant and is also buried there next to Thaxton. Thaxton was married secondly to Elizabeth J Ames, who is also buried there. There's an unmarked grave next to him - could be her. Thirdly, he married Lillian and had a daughter Gayle (I don't have any info on them yet). His daughter Adra (you have her as Adriana) lived in Rocky Ford married to a Benjamin Hinds; then she remarries in 1907 to Thomas Asher. She died in Pueblo, Co. in 1937. Daughter Florentine (Fannie) married Isaac Freshour and I think they both died in Pueblo. Back to Sarah Carpenter, it appears that she stayed in Maroa, Ill until she died in 1914. I'm stuck on her; don't really know much about her.

Our tree is public - you should be able to search it...

We noticed that Ezra D died in Maricopa county... that was early to be in Arizona without air conditioning! That took guts!

Still trying to find more info on the Carlton line -

It seems possible it could be her, but I'd guess it's a low probability.

I concur that she was born about 1840 (in Canada or Maine).

Sarah Carpenter and Thaxter Carlton married in McLean County IL in 1861. The were in Kansas around 1868, as dau Adrianne was born in KS (Thaxter's brother Ezra was in Crawford County KS at this time, so maybe they were near him?). Then Thaxter & Sarah appear in Macon County IL in the 1870 census (Thaxter's brother David is there). In the 1880 census, Thaxter and the children are near Garden City, KS, but no listing of Sarah (has she passed away?). Then in 1900 he is in El Paso County CO with a different wife Lillian (census says they married about 1888). His daughter Adrianne (Addie) and granddaughter Clida are in Rocky Ford in 1900.

Garden City is only 150 miles east of La Junta, so the locations make this seem possible.

I recently acquired a photograph that appears to say the name "Carpenter" (the corner is torn, so this is my best guess) and it also reads "La Junta, Colorado."

It shows what appears to be a mother and father and six boys and one girl that appears to be their children in a lavish home setting or it's painted scenery.

The earliest that photograph could have been taken would have been 1875 (when La Junta was founded) and I'm guessing that the latest the photograph would have been taken was in the early 1900s (since color photography became more commonplace and this photograph is exclusively in sepia and white tones. Based on the fashion, I am going to guess that the date is the early to mid-1890's or later, but definitely not past the 1920's.

Perhaps the daughter in the photograph is Sara Carpenter? What year was she born?

I found a Christmas Card signed Bob and Flossie. IT was from my aunt. The addres was Mr and Mrs F Adams, 521 Sunset, La Junta Co. I do not have a postmark but one of the other cards in the stack was from 1973. I did not remember this "uncle", though my parents did visit A. Flossie in La Junta. I guess, because I did not meet him- I just forgot the marriage. Can anyone verify that they lived there, phone book, personal knowledge. Any info gladly recieved.
Joyce

Great News. I was able to contact a lady at the La Junta Library and she was able to find a census record with my aunts name on it. However, the name was not Aniseta it was Annie and she was 8 at the time that they took the census in 1930. I also talked to my Great Aunt who was married to my Great Uncle Dewey and she has told me that there was a total of 14 children. She only remembered some of the names but they were: Sefirena, Felix, Mary, John or Johnny, Tony who was there father and Ida or Adelaida who was there mother. If anyone knows of these names please contact me. Thanks

Wow I just came across this post and I realize it's been 8 years but it was still kind of freaky. Carl and Jane Kuhn are my great Aunt and Uncle. My grandfather Ralph was Carl's brother. I never really knew them real well but have childhood memories. I think I remember at least one of their kids (Holly?)Please contact me if you wish.
