Lester John Gwyn was the son of John P. Gwyn of Kentucky and Clara Belle Shoup of Ohio. Lester was born in 1886 in Kansas. Some of Lester's siblings were Emmett, Clara, Herbert, Nellie, Gladys, and Robert. By 1900, the family had moved to La Junta, Otero County, Colorado. John was an architect and died there in 1959.
Lester John Gwyn married Elnora "Nora" Belle Brittell Barnes. She was born in 1888 in Nebraska and had been previously married to George Barnes. Lester and Elnora had four boys, three survived. Lester, his parents, and three of his sons - John, Lee, and Edward - are buried in Fairview Cemetery, Otero County, Colorado.
