I realize it has been 9 yrs. since this post was written, but in case any one else is searching;
Sidney Davis Hoyt married John Schuyler Hoyt, parents of Edwin G. Hoyt (born 1867), their grandson Edwin G. Hoyt (1899-1983)was my grandfather.
Sidney was born April 24, 1840 in Hannibal, MO. It is unclear who her parents actually were. I speculate from my comparative research that Minerva (last name unknown) born about 1814 in VA may have been her father's second wife. However, there is an eight year gap between Harvey and Sidney which to me looks like half-sibs, so it makes it unclear.

1850 US Census records show her in Ralls County, MO in the order they appear:

James Davis age 51, born in KY
Minerva age 36, born in VA
Albert age 18, born in KY
Harvey age 18, born in KY
SIDNEY age 10, born in MO
James age 8, born in MO
Rhodes age 6, born in MO

Also listed in same household are:
Henrietta age 35, born in PA (aunt, sister-in-law to James?)
Elizabeth age 13, born in MO
Susan age 10, born in MO
Caroline age 6, born in MO
Agness age 4, born in MO
William H. age 2, born in MO

In further research of each person I have found that Census records for Rhodes Davis show his father born in NC or SC and mother in KY. In Sidney's I find NC listed for father's birthplace and KY for mother's. This would rule out both James and Minerva. Were Sidney, James (age 8,in 1950) and Rhodes orphans?
I have found some having a Cynthia Canterbury as the mother, but I have found absolutely nothing in records to substantiate that.
As for any other information on Sidney, she did own land in Colorado. I am looking further into those records.
I would love to hear from anyone who may have more information or would like to know more on what I have.
Sidney married at age 16 probably because of a full house.

Fort Morgan thinks of itself as being a small town despite its population of around 10,000, so we're strapped for on-line research at the local level, too. Don't think many of them here have lived in a REALLY small town!

You’re best bet at the moment is the Fort Morgan Museum Bloedorn Research facility. http://www.ftmorganmus.org/bloedorn.htm. They have a lot of microfilmed materials, a card cross-reference file of obituaries, etc. They will charge you a little bit – I don’t recall the fees, it is all on the web site.

Fort Morgan library doesn’t keep micro film files of our local newspaper or maintain a data base. Museum has all of that. But, for the library go to http://fmpl.polarislibrary.com/Search/default.aspx?ctx=3.103...

Fort Morgan Times newspaper is at http://www.fortmorgantimes.com/ but I didn’t see anything there – it was just a quick look.

Good Luck
Thanks for trying to teach me something new. I am always looking for new tricks and resources. Today I was at the library and confirmed that we do not belong to any of the online newspaper websites. We have ancestry and elibrary but these do not contaiin the record I am looking for. We are a small town with a small budget and they just don't pay for many online databases. Can you tell me what the name of the website or database on which you were able to access the obituary? I will see if there is another way I can gain access. Maybe I can get a library card in Colorado to use thier system. I would LOVE to be able to look in more newspapers. THanks again...

Does anyone recognize the location of this headstone? (picture included)

I am searching for the location of my great grandfather, great grandmother, and great aunt's gravesite. The attached picture was possibly taken in the 1940-50s timeframe (I'm guessing from the scalloped edges on the top and bottom of the picture) by persons unknown.

What I know:

James A. Shepard (great grandfather) was the Head Cashier of the First National Bank of Gill, CO. in May of 1913.

Polk's Boulder County Directory for 1918 lists all three Shepards. James was the owner of Columbine Rooms at 1504 Pearl. He is listed with Lottie (great grandmother), and Clara (great aunt) is listed as a resident there. James died in December of that year.

James Shepard listed in "Deaths from Newspapers in Boulder 1901-1925" at Carnegie Library. It states that he was buried in Ft. Morgan, Colorado

Perhaps the house in the picture might give a hint as to where this may be. Then again, after 50-60 years, it may be a parking lot or mall now.

Any help will be appreciated.
Headstone is engraved with the names of both Clinton and Viola R HORTON.

Note 3 Headstone is engraved with the names of both Eleazer and Viola HORTON.

Note 4 Plot purchased by M.G. HORTON. The cemetery book includes information that the names R Fayerhern and A. Zach are also engraved on the stone.

Your query said that your grandmother, Elizabeth Rose Horton died in Denver in the 1960’s. It is quite possible then that the Elizabeth Horton who died 17 Apr 1969 was your grandmother. The fact that the plot was purchased by M.G. Horton may be an indication of your grandfather’s name although I have not found any data regarding an M.G. Horton. Adding to all of this are the names R. Fayerhern and A. Zach reportedly engraved on the stone.

With her date of death, you can order a copy of her death certificate from Colorado Birth and Death Certificates: http://www.cdphe.state.co.us/hs/certs.asp

I’m going to check some other resources as well as locating the headstone to check out the reported engraved information. Weather of late has been nasty to not nice so this may take a number of days. The cemetery has been buried (no pun intended) under a blanket of snow since October but we are finally getting some warm weather.
I am in the process of clearing up some old Morgan County Colorado board queries and found yours.

I did find the following in Tombstone Inscriptions and Burials, Morgan County, Colorado Compiled and published by Platte River Branches Genealogy Society, 1994.

The cemetery book is inclusive of all records from the local mortuary, city and county records, cemetery records and actual sightings of the gravestones. Records are complete up through 31 Dec 1993.

RIVERSIDE CEMETERY, Fort Morgan, Morgan County, Colorado

SPANEVELLO, James Michael b. 25 Nov 1911 d. 1 Apr 1991 Sect L, Block 2, Lot 158. Plot was purchased by C.L. CANEVA

You noted that your "Mike" may have died ca. 1920 which would be much earlier than this "Mike" but I'm forwarding the info on to you considering that there may be a possible connection or C.L. CANEVA may be familier to you.
I forgot to say that the rumor was that granddad died during or just before the depression, they used to own a plot of land that a friend surveyed for grandma looking for minerals as neighbors had found oil on their properties. The man that surveyed the property with the help of the university hid the results and offered her a low amount as she couldnt afford the property anymore. Oil was struck shortly after she sold and moved with her 2 kids to denver. The man that bought it is now very wealthy and Dad feels that he ripped off the family. The sale was 1933 - 1936 from what i can remember him saying. All this info was givin to me i around 1985 and havent talked to dad in about 20 years now.

Thank you for the information but i am still not sure if that answers the question. I know they came over to the states during a purge for religous reasons from the balkan states, germany and austria. I am not sure of those dates yet as I have not found Grandads name yet. I do remember my father telling me he changed his name to shorten it. Horton is the short version of the original and was only the begining of the name. So I am wondering if he was burried under the original name. The other thing is that my mother thinks that she was burried in denver but not real sure of that either. They divorced almost 50 yrs ago and i have little to no contact with dad anymore.
If this all helps let me know, I will probably have to get a hold of dad to make sure.
Ken
