George T. Cowan
June 26, 1915 - April 16, 2007

George T. Cowan of Grand Junction, CO died at St. Mary's Hospital on April 16, 2007 of natural causes. He was 91 years old. A memorial service will be held at Martin Mortuary at 10:00 AM on Thursday, April 19, 2007 with internment at Memorial Gardens. Visitation hours will be from 9:00 to 10:00 at Martin Mortuary.

He was a long time resident of Mesa County having moved here after World War II from Paonia, Colorado. He was born in Castle Gate, Utah on June 26, 1915 to James H. Cowan and Myfanwy Evans Cowan. The family moved to Somerset, Colorado where they were involved in the coal mining industry and farmed in the North Fork Valley. George graduated from Paonia High School and married Margaret Louise Carter in 1937.

After World War II was declared, he and his three brothers joined the military. He was a member of the U.S. Army, 3119th Signal Service Battalion, Pacific Theater, a unit that served with distinction in providing the communications for the war effort in the Phillipines, Espirito Santos and New Heberdes. He sustained injuries during the war and was hospitalized in California until his discharge.

He began driving a bus for Rio Grande Motorway in 1947. He joined Continental Trailways when Rio Grande was purchased by Continental in 1948. During a 30 year career, he was credited with saving two lives during a winter storm on Loveland Pass in 1960 and later presented with the Two Million Mile Safety Award just prior to his retirement. Most of the two million accident free miles were driven on the hazardous mountain highways of Colorado and Utah. During retirement, he enjoyed tending to his beautiful rose garden and his golf games at both Lincoln Park and Tiara Rado golf courses.

He is survived by his children Gary R. Cowan of Colorado Springs, CO and his daughter Patty Costello of Grand Junction, CO, seven grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Dorwyn Cowan of Sun City, CA, Calvin Cowan of Las Cruces, NM, his sisters Artamus Abseck of Long Beach, CA and Floraine Buckley of Long Beach CA. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years and by his brothers Harry Cowan and James Cowan. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado.

The Daily Sentinel
Grand Junction, Mesa Co., Colorado
April 18, 2007

Looking for any information on John S Taylor and/or John A Palmer, who were in the area of Collbran and Grand Junction in the late 1800s.

John S Taylor was in the area circa 1880 to the winter of 1894 when he died while hunting. He is supposedly is buried in the cemetery at Eaglite (Plateau City), near Collbran. Apparently, his death was reported in the Plateau newspaper.

John A Palmer was in the area ca 1892-1910. Neither are thought to have been farmers.

Bruce Palmer
palmermail@verizon.net
William Thomas Miller born 1874 IL, married Nancy Ellen Edgar in Springfield, MO 1897. CH: William L., Ellen (md Chas Baker), Annabelle (md Baker), May (md Chas.Phillips). They live in Grand Junction, CO 1903-1919 where he worked doing govt construction. He took a leave of absence in 1919 to work for Orman & Vetter Construction. They were building a tunnel under the Rio Grande when there was a cave-in, just 2 weeks after he began the job. His legs were paralyzed as a result. He stated his wife had died 2 months prior. Another part of the report says Catherine Colvin died 1919. Did he remarry? His brother took him back to KS where he died in 1949.
I can find them in no census. The report (made in 1927) says son William L. was in the US Army in Utah, dts Ellen & May lived in Butte, MT, and dt May lived in Montrose, CO. If this sounds familiar to anyone, I would appreciate a note.

THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I received the obits in the mail today. Thank you so much!! This was the first time I saw any articles about my fathers death...very interesting article....ironically enough I was working for ConocoPhillips company before I moved out here to California as a Safety Administration Assistant...and COP had been drilling (for natural gas) in the Piceance Basin very near where my father was killed. For all I know that mine where he was killed near may now be open. My grandmother has told me that my dad talked about how dangerous work was about two weeks before he was killed...mentioned someone would get killed up there.

Small world...thank you again!!!!

What I have is primarily from family sources and from an obit for George that I took notes from but can't put my hands on at the moment. Carrie (my gggrandmother and Emma and George Yeager came to the US from Alsace in April 1880. Early on, they were in Burlington Iowa. Carrie married William Sahl in Des Moines, and they moved to Colorado, where they at one point ran a bakery in Cripple Creek during the gold rush years. I have her birthplace listed as Bischheim Alsace-Lorraine in an old Sahl/Kahler family bible. My notes from George's obit say that he worked in a bakery in Perry IA in 1886 and lived in Des Moines, where he was at one point chief of police, until 1925. He then lived with his sister Emma and her husband Dennis Graney in Perry IA. I list his birthdate as 9/26/1864, death 8/1943. Married to Amanda Rice 1889, child listed in obit Mrs. Carl Tompkins of Forest Grove Oregon. I know nothing about the parents of these three children, and know most about Carrie's family.
Anything sound familiar?

My name's Jacob Schulke. I'm the great grandson of Birdie Schulke. I've heard a similar story about her death. I was also told she was shot in some sort of lover's dispute or something of that nature. I have nothing further though. I know that her first husband was Edward Charles Schulke, with whom she had several children including my grandfather. I have more than that, and I'll tell you all I can.

Jacob Schulke
emtschulke@yahoo.com

(Not passing any judgement of her). 1. Hubert Wyche 2. William Graham 3. This one may have been Bill Evans. She only had children by #1 and they are dead. I've been trying to close this loop in my family history for years. Every now and then I get cranked up on this, knowing I am the only one in the family that will ever care.

OUCH! That's not an easy one. I wonder if the Mesa County Library has their obits indexed for that yr? Did she marry before 1940 in Colorado? There is an index for that 1858-1939. Even after 1940, if in Colorado, Clerk of the Court would have those records. Also, why not try an email to the Dept of Health and ask them, with only a 1st name, age, place of death and yr. would it be possible?
Good Hunting,
Frank

And what is the aunt's name and particulars that you have?
Thank you for your reply. I would like to find a search friendly way of looking at death records in 1964. What I would like to do is look at all of the records for that year and maybe narrow it down to a first name and sex. I guess I am asking for too much. I know my Aunt died there but I do not have a clue as to her married name.

I do not think that safe is all that shut. Death Records before 1907 are very few and far between.Esprecially once you leave the Denver area. You have to consider that there was not that established need for records back then for deaths. More important was property. (you know what I mean)
Maybe there was a probate record. But, doubtful on death records.
Good Hunting,
Frank

Searching for John McDermott and wife Charlotte in New Orleans, Louisiana about 1865. John was a practicing physician living on Prytania Street, about 40 years old (born about 1825). He may have served in the military during the Civil War.

There was also a Marcellus McDermott living on Prytania Street at this time.

ANY help greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Joan Tucker
