Ella Palo was my grandmother. She was born in Leadville; her family immigrated from Finland around 1890. She would have been around 18 when your grandparents married. Ella married my grandfather, Victor Kling, around 1920. A year or so later they moved to Englewood, CO (their house is still there, about 10 blocks from where I live). Ella died in 1935.
Victor immigrated from Finland when he was 15 and eventually ended up in Leadville where he worked in the silver mines. Victor was a roomer in the same house as Ivan Santikko, along with Gust Hakala and Frank Guonoa (this is from the 1920 census). From what I can tell, they immigrated through Pennsylvania (PA).
There is a Facebook page sponsored by the Lake County Historical Society entitled "Colorado Mountain History Collection." It has pictures and more info about Finntown. I hope you get this info and that it helps in your search.

Thanks Al. I certainly would be happy to share them with the library. I have one copy from the Colorado State Archives and one from the Wyoming State Archives. Unfortunately, I'm not 100% sure I'm tracking the right Thomas O'brien. As you probably found out...there were a lot of O'briens (and Tom O'briens) in the mining districts back in the late 1800's. The only reason I think the Thomas O'brien I'm looking for is the same one you mentioned in your post is because the Canon City pentitentary listed the occupation of the one I'm tracking as a "teamster"...same as the 1880 census you refer to.

As a side note, I've possibly narrowed Thomas O'brien's death to 1903 in Salida, CO (drug overdose)...or possibly alive in 1930 living in Phoenix, AZ.

I take it since your post in 1999 you haven't been able to nail down your Thomas O'brien's whereabouts either?

PS I've attached a scan of his picture from the Colorado State Archives

Al,

Happened by your 1999 inquiry concerning the where abouts of Thomas O'brien and Maria O'brien within your family history research. I realize this is 13 years since your post, but I've been researching a Thomas O'brien from the Leadville area whom is connected with a murder in Wyoming back in 1888. I believe the Thomas O'brien you mentioned in your post is one in the same. Did you ever find out any further details concerning Thomas O'brien? I have a couple pictures of the Thomas O'brien I'm researching.

Slade Franklin
Cheyenne, WY

I am searching or for living Sweeney who are the children of James Adolphus Sweeney and Eunice Erna Belanger who was the daughter of Arthur Belanger and Augusta Radtke and the grand daughter of Auguste Belanger and Delima Delia Brisson. I know that Eunice Erna is dead on 1993.
Auguste Belanger was my grandfather's brother, who leaved Saint-Fabien of Rimouski circa 1886 and settled in Michigan. He lived in Sault-Ste-Marie where where his granddaughter Eunice Erna was born. I have some information about him and his family and a photo I think is from him, his spouse and children Arthur, Leda and Scholastique.
Monique Belanger, Matane

Climax Molybdenum payroll sheets, Aug 1947

I am not connected to this area or to anyone on the payroll. See below to view some names and information I transcribed from these payroll sheets and find out where I found these sheets.

Payroll of the Climax Molybdenum Company – August 1947
In the Vancouver, BC, Canada art museum, Vancouver Artgallery, 750 Hornby Street, Vancouver, BC., in the exhibit "from the collection: Unreal" which is showing from January 22 to September 5, 2011, there is a work by artist Graham Gillmore (b. 1963, Vancouver.) The title of this artwork is 'Help' and is dated 1998.

The art is felt pen written and drawn over large sheets of paper (approximately 11" x 14") taped together. I am supposing that the artist found the papers as discards. Those pieces of paper are each titled "Payroll of the Climax Molybdenum Company." The dates I could read were August 21, 1947 and August 31, 1947, typed onto the pages. The names were typed down the left sides of the pages.

The artwork is large, and I could not see all of the payroll sheets in detail. But I took some of my time to transcribe some of the names and occupations that I could read. There were 24 payroll sheets, four across and six down. Numbering across from left to right, I transcribed the names from part of sheet 9, all of sheet 13, and part of sheet 17. These were all on the left side of the artwork. I will list the names and the occupations listed for those names. There were further columns, with information concerning payroll, but I did not try to transcribe those numbers.

Page 9
[This page begins with 9 names where only surnames were visible, due to a piece of paper glued over, to either mend a tear or join pieces together.]
Lucius J. Purlin - Packer
[The page continues, but I had no more paper on which to transcribe more names.]

Some of the other occupations on the other pages were: Sampler, Packer, Jaw Opr., Woodpicker, Statisticn., Mill Opr., Filter Opr., Janitor, Pond Shftr., Flot. pr., Rob. Lake Pumpman, Trip. Opr., Pack Boss, and Dispatcher.
There were columns with headings for the following deductions: O. A. B., Tax, Board, Rent, Light, Hosp., Store, Ins., Club, Tel., Badge, Union, and Bonds.
Take home pay amounts ranged from a low of $36, to a middle amount of $95 for a miner, to a high of $204 for a B. M. Opr.

I am sorry that I could not transcribe all of the names. There may also be names on the back side of the papers. It seems that the artwork is part of the permanent collection of the Vancouver Artgallery. But I am hoping that this information will be of interest to someone researching family history.
Hi I noticed one of your posts on Ancestry. I am in the Knockainey area at the moment researching so the info in your post was fascinating to me. My Johanna Dooley - details below was married in Bruff but her 3 firstborn children were all baptised in Knockainey. A local parish priest I visited said that women often returned to their parents home for the birth of their first child in particular & sometimes for the birth of other children.

I am searching for info on my ancestors - Terence O'Brien born abt 1815 married to Johanna Dooley - Bruff 1836. TOB son of Daniel OB & Catherine Carroll. Johanna daughter of James Dooley & Ellen Conner. Traced baptism of TOB & JOB 3 chld 1836,37,39 to St Johns RC Church, Knockainey - sponsor to one child's baptism is James Dineen. Also found baptism record in same church records for older brother of Terence -Murtagh.bapt 1811 My tree is on ancestry.

Do you have any info to share that may help me or any people you can suggest who may have info?
Also a local historian & archeologist - Michael Quinlan lmquinlan@eircom.net has done a lot of work in this area & is transcribing the tombstones in St Johns Graveyard in Knockainey. Cheers. Christine

obits, headstones and other cluse of McMahon family

I’m looking to descendants to May and John W McMahon.

May E. MCMAHON 1885 - 1937 buried at
http://coloradogravestones.org/view.php?id=636

John W. MCMAHON 1892-1939 buried at
http://coloradogravestones.org/view.php?id=632

At the 1920 census they had four children

1) Evelyn Mcmahon	F	11 years
2) James Mcmahon	M 8 years
3) Marion Mcmahon	F 5 years
4) Bernard Mcmahon	M 3 years and 6 months

The family lived at Leadville; the parents are buried there. Their children seem to moved, a vague clue tells (if it's correct) that "James, lived many years in Denver and worked as a policeman. He died in Denver on 15 April 1961 and was married but they had no children."

So, if anyone can help me with an obit from James burial 1961 and or from John W’s burial 1939 there might be more clues to follow.

I’m grateful for every single clue that helps me forward in my research

Thanks!
Having trouble locating my grgrgrandfather in 1885 Colorado census...think I need a 'fresh' set of eyes to take a look for me. :)

What I know: Thomas Douglas Harle, b.1862 in Iowa. Married Emma Darling (b. 1859, Iowa) on 1 Jan 1883 in Leadville, CO. Children: Pearl D (1885), William Douglas (1887), Dawn Elizabeth (1889), Levicus Sidney (1892), Harriet Maude (1894), and Thomas Alden (1897). Thomas D. died in Leadville on 5 Feb 1900 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery (as are Pearl, d.1896, & Dawn, d.1895).

I did locate him in 1885 Leadville City Directory (freighter, r. 132 W. Elm) but no luck in the Census.

Also, regarding child Pearl...this is the name on the Cemetery Record, but I am not sure this was her correct name. There is a death notice in the 1 Apr 1896 Leadville Evening Chronicle (last page, bottom of column two), but it is very difficult to read. Could sure use another's opinion on what her name was.

Thanks so much for your time and assistance! Jeri

My suggestion is to go through those and contact the specific counties where you see a John Cummings. The one I found in our Leadville 1885 Colorado Special census is from Ireland, although he is the right age. Good Luck!

I did find him living in Missouri in 1880. I have 3 clues to where he might have lived. In a Bio about his father it said living
somewhere in Colorao. Then in 1903 when is sister died it said he was living somwhere out west. When his mother said
it said she had two surving sons. Micheal and Thomas which means he passed away. I am thinking he have seatled some where in Colorado.

Debra,
I found your Frank T Propernick & family in the 1930 census for Leadville, Lake County, CO. They were part of Ward number1, Precinct No 2, Ed District 33-2, Superviosors District 6 Sheet 1B.
Frank is listed as the head of household living at 618 Elm street, 55years with Annie F 45 years, Rudolph 20 years, Tony J 18 years, and Angela M 14years. Frank is listed as a laborer in the smelter, born in Yugloslavia, speaks German immigrated 1901. Annie is listed as born in Yugloslavia, speaks German & immigrated in 1902. Children born in Colorado.

There was also a John Propernick & his family listed on page 3B, same everything else as Frank living at 530 West Second Street. John is 51, immigrated 1905, born Yugloslavia, speaks German and also a laborer in the smelter. His wife, Mary, 46, born & speak same, immigrated 1911. Children John J 19, Angela J 16, Thony J 13, Fritz(?)8 were all born in CO.

If I had to guess, I think that Frank & John were brothers and both were married before they came to the USA.
I hope this helps.
Sheree'

Here is what she meant to post. She posted this in Chaffee county!
Iam one of the daughters of Tony and Mary Propernick.
My father was born in Leadville Colorado, I have noticed there are alot of Propernicks in leadville, colorado. My Grandparents names were Frank and Ana propernick. the spelling of the last name was changed when they came to the United States from Austria in the 1900's. The original spelling was praprotnik. I would be very interested in finding relatives, and family history.

Diane,
You are doing fine, people forget that new people do not know what they are doing. I finally figured out how I could post it for you.
Sheree'

NO, it is your sentence structure. Go back and reread your requests. They do not make any sense.
And if they lived in Chaffee, why post in Lake County?
Then I guess you need to give us a time frame of what you are looking for. There is nothing hard to understand about I know them now, living and I know a lot that are deceased but they lived in Chaffee Co., not Lake.
