My grandmother had a book that contained an account of a school bus that got stranded in a blizzard in the 1930's (if I remember correctly). It also seems like a memorial was erected to honor those who died. Does anyone have that book or an account of the incident and the location of the memorial, if there is one?

Thanks,
Jackie

HELP with '1902' obituary, Chester Joseph or Joseph Chester HENERY

Would someone please lookup a newspaper obituary/article for Chester Joseph or AKA Joseph Chester HENERY?

He passed away on 23 Dec 1902 according to his headstone in the France Cemetery (unknown death place and cause). He was a ranch cook in the 1900 Kiowa County census when he was 20/21 years old. I don't believe he married between 1900 and his death in 1902 as I can't find any proof. He was only 23 years old when he died. He was either living in/and/or taking a business course in Salina, Kansas between 1897 and his death in 1902.

Might there have been an epidemic of some sorts during this time?

Any ideas/help appreciated.

I think I know how Blanche wound up here - homesteading was in full swing in Kiowa County, starting about 1908 and getting very active about 1910 when the law changed to allow a half-section of land to be homesteaded instead of a quarter section.
What were her brothers' names? I have a homestead news note that Steven Miles left for Missouri (issue of October 2, 1908) after making a five year proof on a quarter section of land near Sheridan Lake - also Orville M. Miles filed a notice for publication that he was going to prove up on a quarter section of land - five year proof - in October, 1912. One of the witnesses he planned to use happened to be Kiowa Albright, who was a brother of W.H. Albright.

Homesteading was a family affair in those days - they could come on the train, and many women came to homestead, especially if their brothers came, too.
I'll try to include both those when I send material to you.

According to the Kiowa County Press, July 24, 1908, in the Sheridan Lake News,
Mr. W.H. Albright and Miss Blanche Miles were united in marriage at six o'clock Wednesday evening at the house of the bride.

The Press was regularly published on Fridays, but the regional news was usually sent in earlier in the week, so the wedding may have been either July 15 or July 22, 1908.

I have quite a bit of information from the Press on the Albright family, including the notice of proof on his homestead, and the births and deaths of several of their children, an obituary for W.H. Albright, and also for his mother and brother, etc.

The Albright family were rather prominent in Kiowa County, so they were in the news frequently. You can also find a write up on the family in the History of Colorado, by Stone, The S.J. Clarke Co., 1918, Vol. IV, page 43.

If you will send your e-mail address I can e-mail you the information I have, or if you will send your address with a small check to cover costs to Ruthanna Jacobs, Box 787, Eads, Colorado, 81036, I can send it directly to you.

I have an obituray for Grace Farthing in my files, but none for Ella Douglas. However, I taught with Mrs. Farthing (and her husband was the superintendent of schools) about 1949 and 1950, before I finished college, so I know they were here about that time and perhaps a few years later. I do not have all the material copied from the local papers, but if you could give me a date of death, I could look it up at the court house where the old newspapers are. Or I could check the death records locally - but you will have to write or contact them directly to get a copy.
The only note I have on the Keairns family is the marriage of "Frank Keairns and Miss Alice G. Morris of Granada, [who] were married at Raton, New Mexico, on the 14th of April [1903]. Their future home will be in Granada. Mr. Keirns formerly lived near Towner, this county."
There is also a card for the birth of a child to Mr. and Mrs. Kerns about 1913. Otherwise, nothing close.
This would indicate that search in Prowers County, CO (where Granada is) or in Tribune, Kansas which is very close to Towner, might be of more help.

Think they are buried in the Haswell Cemetery or the Las Animas Cemetery. Perhaps Catherine is buried in Pueblo, Colorado. One I knew best was a son--young man nicknamed "Dutch".
Hello Kiowa County Listers,

I am posting to the Kiowa Message Board. I wonder if anyone out there knows or remembers the family of William H. ALBRIGHT, and his wife Katie Blanche and their children. I found the family there in Precinct 3, Sheridan Lake, Kiowa County, CO in each of the censuses from 1900 through 1930. Katie Blanche ALBRIGHT was my gg-grandmother's sister. I would like to share information with anyone interested. I have some info about the families on Mrs. Albright's side. I am looking for the marriage date and place of William H. Albright and Katie Blanche MILES. It was around 1910-11, but I don't know if it was in Colorado or back in Missouri, where the MILES family was living.
Any suggesitons are welcome.
Laura

Hello Ruthanna,

Thank you so much for the information about W.H. Albright and family. As I may have mentioned, his wife was my gg-grandmother's youngest sister. I would like very much to document Blanche MILES ALBRIGHT's marriage, children, death and burial. Thank you for sending the info about the marriage. Do you suppose from reading it that Blanche Miles' home, where the wedding took place, was in Kiowa County? I can't quite figure out how she got there. Her family was from Missouri. One of her brothers ended up in Ridgeway, Ouray County, Colorado, though. And, OK, now that I think about it, another sister went to Montana, one died young in Missouri but her children moved with their father and 2nd wife to Wyoming, and another sister went to Arkansas, But how did Blanche (or Katie B.) Miles meet Mr. W.H. Albright? I wonder.

I will be happy to send you a check and an SASE. I'll try to get it out this week.

Thank you again for your response. I really do appreciate it.

Laura

BINGO! That must be how she met Mr. Albright. Stephen Miles was her father and Orville (also Orval, Orvill) was her brother. Orville is the one who ended up in Ridgeway, Colorado.

I will get that envelope out to you today, if possible. Now my curiosity is REALLY up! Amazing what happened in between the census years!

Today I found the USGenWeb pages for Kiowa county and saw the few Albrights who were buried in the Sheridan Lake cemetery. Also, in the 1911 directory I see that W.H. Albright was the County Assessor. I also checked the censuses a few days ago and found the siblings of W.H. and his mother there in Sheridan Lake area. In the SL cemetery, I see that his father died in 1890.

Thanks again, Ruthanna. This is so exciting!

Laura

Rebel in Haswell

My name is Mary Myers and I am the daughter-in-law of Alice Rebel Myers and grand daughter-in-law of Emma and John Rebel long time residents of Haswell, Colorado. I am going through old pictures of both Alice's and the Rebel's and have quite a number of them of people from that area and there are a few that I cannot identify but I am willing to donate them for historical purposes. Please let me know if your historical society would like to have these pictures. I stayed with Alice Myers until she passed away in June of 2001. I then moved to Arkansas to be near my daughter and family in Arkansas. I live with them. My daughter Robbie, she is the granddaughter of Alice and the Great granddaughter of Emma and John Rebel and I have repeatedly tried contacting the Kiowa Historical Society names and my email is rejected so maybe this will help in getting the information to the correct persons. I have enclosed my email address and you may contact me at that address.
Sincerely,
Mary Myers
mf38myers@sbcglobal.net

Obituary lookup for Towner, Kiowa Co. death 25 May 1927 ?

My great-aunt Adalade Annora Crum (maiden surname) died in Towner on 25 May 1927. Tracking this lady has been difficult, however, because she married 5 times, and none of us are certain of what her last married name was: Hudson, Huddleston and Heddesson all exist in our family records..

She was known as "Ada" or "Addie." Her husband (surname unknown) is known to have survived her. Her only children were by previous husbands named Pound and Peeler in Indiana. Another previous husband was named Morgan.

I am new to Colorado genealogy. I'm hoping some researcher angel can help find her obituary and maybe place of burial.

I am ready to reimburse such an angel for time, photocopying, etc.

Thanks for any help!

Richard Crum
Santa Monica, CA
richard.crum@verizon.net

Hello and thanks so much, Ruthanna !

Your message was chock-full of information useful to me. Besides the data on "Nora Crum Pounds Morgan Peeler Hudson Huddleston", the information on Riley Crum's daughter Minnie was a pleasant surprise--Riley was a close member of our Crum line and we had lost track of all his children, including Minnie. So thanks for that tidbit, too, as well as the tip about the Towner-Tribune situation. Your opener "I have some information for you, but not much" proved to be way off-target!

By the way, since I had not sent you an e-mail (only posted on this message board), I'm assuming your last sentence was a mistake, probably intended for another correspondent.

Cheers!
Richard

Any information on Ellen (McCARTY) DOUGLAS, who supposedly died in Eads, Colorado. Ellen was born in Randolph County, Illinois, around 1865. She married George DOUGLAS in St. Clair County, Illinois, in 1891 and moved to Colorado around that time. Their children were George, Grace (who supposedly married a Mr. FARTHING), and John. Ellen supposedly died in Eads. Any help with Ellen or her family is appreciated. Thanks!
