Erastus Hinsdale in Connecticut or New York

I am at a brick wall with my Carr line. Josiah Carr was born 1803 in Connecticut and his older and only sibling was born 1802 in Connecticut. Their father was named Josiah S Carr and evidently died before his namesake was born. Their mother, Lois or Louisa, married Erastus Hinsdale in Connecticut in 1806 and had 6 children between 1807 and 1822. (One born in Connecticut, four were born in Columbia County, New York and one in Dutchess County, New York.)
If I could just find anyone from any of those Hinsdale children who might know this family! Contact MaryAnne!

Tim Clawson - HInsdale Pioneer

I am a Clawson researcher, and have put together a biography on Tim Clawson and his family. I am interested in connecting with anyone else researching this family. Tim Clawson came to the Lake City area ca 1874. He had Clawson Ranch about eight miles out of town, and he married Martha Matthews in Illinois in 1887. They returned to Hinsdale County, and had seven children. Three are buried on the ranch, and a fourth is buried with Tim Clawson in Lake City. He died there in 1904, and the family left - although many continued to return to the area. If you're researching this family, please contact me.

John Laird
Santa Cruz, CA

I am looking for any information on Clair Smith. I understand that he was a Sheriff or Deputy Sheriff in Lake city around the mid 1880's. Two of his children were said to have been born in Lake City. Frankie Smith 1879 and Claude E. Smith who was born in February of 1881. I have located Claude's grave in British Columbia however I have been unable to locate Frankie. I think he might have died before he reached the age of two somewhere in Colorado. Clair's full name is Ira Clair Smith born in Wisconsin 1851. His brothers were Jay F. Smith and Scott Smith. Clair's wife was Luella Smith (nee Perry) born in Audubon, Iowa, his oldest son was Arthur Lewis Smith born in Cass, Iowa in 1876.

Any info would be appreciated

Darla, what is the info your Mom sent to you? I am really curious. There are some Packers buried over at Greenlawn Cemetery in Berthoud, Colorado by my GGrandparents and one is an Alfred, so it is always possible. I am having little luck with Packer information. I think, though I don't know, that the Miner home north of Milliken, Colorado about one section up on lefthand side on hwy 257 "Jack Rabbit Trail" used to belong to Packers and my Grandmother Minnie Mae Packer inherited. My Mom said her Uncle Charlie Packer lived there with them in the house for a long time and then moved out to a smaller house on the property.

Could be you and I are cousins and Alfie might be one of those "skeletons in the closet" that some of my family are worried i might dig up. :)

write back. i welcome your emails to email address above as well.

later, Lynn

Joseph (Simon) Long, PA to CO-Miner of Silver ????

In a letter, dated May 1943, written by my grandmother, who was born Dec 13, 1889, in Del Norte, Rio Grande, Colorado. She had always claimed her father, who had supposedly died or "wandered" away about 1990, in she had been told, the Denver area, he had been a miner, name of Joseph Simon Long. She had always told me that her father was of Welsh descent, but born in PA. I see by the US Census that there was a Joseph Long born abt 1845, residing in Lake City, Hinsdale, Colorado in 1880. There was one other Joseph Long in Colorado in 1880, he in Central City, Gilspin, Colorado. Do any of you researchers know either or have either of these men on your lists. The one I am searching for married a Mary Ella (or vise versa) Fresh, she born in 1866 in Kansas. Or can one of you point me in the correct direction??

Saw your posting re the Ramsey Mine. Was the Ramsey you're referring to located, I believe, west of Lake City, Colorado? When I was 13-14 years of age (I'm now 70) my brother and I hitchhiked to the Ramsey Mine. Our Uncle Smith and Aunt Nell Wager, told us it was an abandoned mine. It was a very long climb through shale rock to reach the mine, but once there, we went inside. Very scary, with no lights. I don't have a lot of past history on this mine, but if it is located between Lake City, CO and further down the road is a very large recreational lake, I would suggest you contact the Chamber of Commerce in Lake City, Colorado.

Connie Calvert
