Hi janet,
I think that I may have missed your reply. Thank you very much. This information was very helpful and I have found many newspaper references to him.

Do you live in Conejos County? If so, do you know of anywhere that I may be able to find out where the Saloon and Movie theater were located? Or his home?

Again, thank you very much for your response and I apologize for not getting back to you sooner.
Kristin

I'm looking for any family info on the Chavez family that decended from Macario Chavez and Josefa Martinez. Also info on where they were born and who their parents were. I believe they came from New Mexico. My grandmother was Maria Josefa Chavez born Mar 30, 1914, daughter of Nazario Chavez and Teresa Romero. Her Godparents were Celestino and Sepita Gomez. Looking for any living relatives of her many brothers and sisters, but especially looking to trace the families, back as far as I can. Other names I have found in association with my family: Maria de la Luz Gallegos, daughter of Florinto Gallegos, Carmen Romero, Maria Agapita Lopez...

Go online to the familysearch dot org site and open the library catalog and do author search, book title search, etc. Mrs. Hostetter (long time school teacher in La Jara schools) probably ordered in the film of the book, to her local LDS Family History Center. If you are still interested in seeing the book after all this time you can do the same. Another alternative is to check with your local public library and do an interlibrary loan to your local public library.

Sorry, I do not yet have any family history on Benito Garcia. He died June 17, 1888 and is buried in Wagon Mound NM. He was one of the earliest Hispano Protestant ministers in NM. He apparently resided in the north-central or north-east part of NM.
You can try to track your family connection via the LDS (Mormon) wegsite www.familysearch.org and the NM Hispanic Geneal. Research Center database at www.hgrc-nm.org. Both Benito and Garcia were fairly common names in NM, so there are likely a few in any given era.
If you determine that this man was your ancestor, I'd appreciate the family history and genealogy to add to our web site and database.

Many NM and southern CO family researchers run into a period 1850-1900 when information becomes sparse because their families converted to Protestant: "The NM Protestant Gap".
My extended family has ties to many of the earliest NM and CO Protestant (Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist) ministers and families.
Anyone wising to exchage information on this topic is welcome to contact me.

I just found this post about my great aunt's and great grandmother's Lodge in Conejos County, Colorado. The lodge was called "Menkhaven on the Conejos". It is still there, but privately owned.
My Aunt Hazel and Aunt Gladys Menke were in vaudeville with numberous well known talent of the time. They named the cabins after quite a few of the famous people they worked with such as Merna Loy,& Bob Hope. I think there was a cabin for Babe Ruth, but it has been so long ago, I am not sure. There was a web page on the lodge, but I am not sure if it is still up. It gave a lot of info on it. Just put "Menkhaven on the Conejos" in Google search to check it out. ~~~ Karen

Hi Judith, I think we are 2nd cousins. My grandfather was the brother of your grandmother Lillian. His name was Thomas Cobley Jr. he married Cora Rake. They had four children Clarence, Edmond Thomas (my dad), Catherine and Lillian. I have some photos that were taken in the early to mid 50s of your grandmother and her third husband when they visited my grandparents here in CA. I'm in one of the photos with Aunt Lilly, her husband, my Dad, Uncle Clarence and his dau. Diane. So I knew there was a third husband but didn't know his name. None of my cousins could remember his name either so I've been looking for it for almost 10 years and finally found it last month. His name was Ross Lamar Bolton and I think they married sometime in the 40s. I was also looking for Aunt Lilly's death date and buriel place which I also found. She died in 1957 and is buried at Sanford Cem. in Conejos Co. CO. I have extensive research on the Cobley's and would love to share what I have with you. We have distant cousins in Australia and Wales who have helped me and sent me photos of our gt gt grandparents and gt gt gt grandfather. Please email me at jodi361atsbcglobal.net (at=@). Hope to hear form you soon.

My grandmother was Lillian Cobley and my grandfather was Austin John Thorpe. My father was Austin Thomas Thorpe (d. 1967) and his sister was Dorothy Schroeder (d. 1996) who lived in Klamath Falls, Oregon. She was married to Rudy Schroeder and I believe that their son's name is Tim. My grandmother died when I was six years old and I did not her very well. In fact, I never heard of her third husband; I was only familiar with Thorpe and Shawcroft.

Judith Thorpe

I'm looking for information on my gt. Aunt Lilly. She married Joseph Hyrum Shawcroft in 1922 and moved to La Jara. Joseph Hyrum Shawcroft died in 1930 and sometime later Aunt Lilly married a man named Bolton and they lived in the Alamosa/Conejos county area. She is buried in the Sanford Cem. and her gravestone says Lillian P. Bolton b. 1888 d. 1957.
I am trying to find out more about Mr. Bolton, when they married, when he died and where he is buried. If anyone can help me find an obit of Lillian I would be very grateful.
Thanks in advance.

Robert...
I just came across your reply (May 2008) to my request for information for Fr. Jose Samuel Garcia. The good Father was my Great Uncle. He was the older brother to my Grand Father Candido Garcia. I would be most interested in securing a copy of the 1938 photo of the "padre". Please indicate if there will be a cost attached to this item.

Sincerely,

Donald E.
Re: Naranjo, Sanchez, Lucero, in LaSauses and Capulin

Our family's history begins with

Maria Francisca Sanchez, who married Jose Guadalupe Naranjo and had a son named Lud----- Sanchez (my great-grandfather).

Lud---- married Sevirina Vigil who was sister to Tomasa Casimira Vigil (I believe) and daughter to Simon Vigil (I believe).

Simon Vigil was father to Ricardo Vigil and grandfather to Ricardo Vigil, Jr. Nick's father. I believe Simon's father was Jose Manuel Vigil, responsible for the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in Aug. 1854 (west side of Rio Grande on north bank of Rio Conejos - known as Guadalupita (Guadalupe) - see reference below under NOTES.

Jose Manuel Vigil's father (I believe) was Cornelio Vigil (the Justice of the Peace in Taos, NM) who assisted in upholding the Conejos Land Grant in Oct. 11, 1842; but the U.S. took the entire region of New Mexico (Nuevo Mexico) from the Republic of Mexico in 1846 (war). The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo called for the U.S. to validate the land holdings - but their petition (signed by Julian Gallegos, Manuel Manazanares, Fernando Montoya and submitted to Charles Bent, NM Territorial Governor on Oct. 5, 1846 was declined and later verified the Conejos Land Grant.
____________
NOTES:
However, in Dec. 30, 1843, Manuel Armijo, governor of NM, awarded the grant of the eastern boundary of the Conejos Land Grant, to the 13 year old son of Carlos Beaubien, Jose Narciso Beaubien and a citizen of Taos, NM named Stephen Luis Lee. The U.S. confirmed the land grant in 1879.

Costilla, a settlement on the Culebra River near San Luis, San Pedro and San Acadio were soon settled. This is the San Luis valley that my family is decended from, possibly as well as Fr. Jose Samual Garcia (see below).
____________
NOTES:
Forts Massachusetts (near base of Mt. Blanca - U.S. 7th Dragoons); and Garland (7 mi. south of base of Mt. Blanca), protected Guadalupe from marauding Indians in 1852 through 1857. Conejos grew on the opposite side of the river bank, due to flooding at Guadalupe. The new jacal fortress then became a barracks with a jail and lookout tower (N.W. corner); which later became the town hall. E.J.P. Valdez later lived in the house replacing that corner after 1890.
___________________________________________________________
Continuing on the Sanchez line: Lud---- Sanchez (illegible first name script on my grandmother's marriage registry at St. Elizabeth's Church in Denver), had a daughter named Louisa Sanchez (my grandmother) who married Thomas Duran in 1921 in Denver, CO. I believe Lud---- Sanchez was brother to Maria Francisca Sanchez (since their timelines of birth/death seems to be correlated).

We also believe that Fr. Jose Samual Garcia (a Catholic priest living in San Luis parish/school in the San Luis Valley, CO was related to our Sanchez line in some way. But I'm not sure who Manulita Sanchez was in connection to our Sanchez ancestors.)

Can anyone assist with this?

____________________________________________________________
Thomas Duran's line included parents: Elias Duran and Ensia Valdez. I believe Ensia had another daughter named Theresa Valdez (possibly Thomas' sister? Not sure, since I have no dates to verify this, other than that her name appears as a witness to their marriage.) I believe Ensia's father was Seledon Valdez, responsible for the Conejos Land Grant in February 8, 1833 (one of several claimants). I believe Seledon Valdez' father was E.J.P. Valdez (mentioned in Marlin Aker, Jr.'s posting of Aug. 17, 2000 - History of San Luis Valley Queries - http://boards.ancestry.com).

Elias Duran's other son/brother was G.P.A. Duran (I believe he was either Thomas' uncle or brother, since he was a witness to their marriage.)

Does anyone have any further ancestry lines back from
the year 1842? If so, please notify me at fudsy5@yahoo.com; thank you! May God bless you for all your hard work and persistence...

-C. Durand (former name was Duran, changed by grandfather in 1920's for work-related reasons)
Anchorage, AK

Park City, Colorado lies midway between Fairplay and Alma in South Park, Park County, Colorado on State Highway 12. It was a mining commumity starting about 1860, and today supports a winter population of about 150, and summer of about 250.

South Park is a geologic feature. A "Park" is a large, relatively flat high-altitude mountain valley, usually covered with grasses. South Park, at 10,000 ft., hosts several mining districts. Park City is at the foot of the Alma Mining District, and is the nearest community to the famous (well, locally) London Mine.

The creator of the Comendy Channel Series "South Park" was raised in another area of Park County.

Pam's info is correct. Also, for a short period (approx. 1890-1900) there was a Presbyterian seminary in Del Norte CO, College of the Southwest, headed by Presbyterian Rev. F. M. Gilchrist. That seminary was dedicated to educating and training young Hispanic males for service in the Presbyterian Church (graduates were usually ordained). The graduates of that seminary (including at least two whose descendents married into my family) went on to found and serve in Presbyterian churches in southern CO and NM.
Some surnames of the Hispanic students of that seminary are: Vigil, Sanchez, Rendon, Aguirre, Madrid, Bernal, Rodriguez, Cisneros, Martinez, Jaramillo, Varos, Juantete, Madrid, Maes, Cruz, Romero, Baros, Barcelon, Sandoval, Tafoya, Van Wagner, Quintana, Torres, Cordova, Atencio, Perea.
The Presbyterians beginning in the later 1800s, were very successful in planting many dozens (maybe as many as 100 or more?) Presbyterian churches and congregations (mostly Hispanic) in southern CO and NM. Many of those churches had day-schools and a few had clinics or small hospitals.
The Mormons (LDS), Congretionalists, and Seventh Day Adventists were present but much less successful in converting the Hispanic (mostly Catholic) population then. The Methodists under Rev. Thomas Harwood were very successful, mostly in NM. The Baptists had early success among Hispanics, but abandoned NM during the Civil War and failed to regain some of their Hispanic converts, many of which switched over the Presbyterian and Methodist.
(For more info one can go to the website, NM & CO Early Protestants, mentioned in another of my thread posts, OR contact me directly: johnchavezdesantafe@yahoo.com)

In reply to whether or not there was a movement to another religion other than Catholism about the turn of the century, there was a concerted effort by the Presbyterian faith to convert the Hispanics in the southwest area to their faith. They offered a bible in spanish and private schooling in Santa Fe. This was very successful. The girl's school was Allison James and the boy's was the Menaul school which was also in Santa Fe in the beginning but now it is a school in Albuquerque and is still running. They do have a museum on site. It is both sexes and they have lots of records.

I'm also trying to find early newspapers from 1880 to the end of the century that might have covered Conejos County. Are there any on film, maybe stacked in a corner in some library?

Please note my new Email address is dc1999@cox.net

Thanks.

Dave Clark

Hi Carole,
I am LOOSELY connected to this family as Harry Swofford's sister, Daisy married into my line. Although I have no information about your DRIVER family.

I was looking at the church records on the Conejos county website and noticed that in the 1920 Member directory, Ruth is still listed under the name Ruth Driver, but it says that she moved by 1918. Unfortunately, it doesn't give any further information than that. Here is the link for that page
http://www.rootsweb.com/~coconejo/cr/bkcd.htm

Also, in case you didn't know, someone was wonderful enough to take pictures of all of the headstones in the Old Manassa Cemetery and post them online. Those can be found at the following link
http://rootsweb.com/~coconejo/OManPics/omc.htm

Sorry that I don't have any other information.
