Jacob Hankins (~1822 - 1895)

Although a book, Portrait and Biographical Record of Denver and Vicinity, Colorado. Containing Portraits and Biographies of Many Well known Citizens of the Past and Present; Together with Biographies and Portraits of all the Presidents of the United States (Chicago: Chapman Publishing Company, 1898), indicates that Jacob Hankins died in 1896, obituaries make it clear that he died 21 Oct 1895.

Images for the obits can be had at coloradohistoricnewspapers.org

The Daily Camera (Boulder, Colorado), Friday, 11 October 1895, p. 4
Local News.
Mr. Jacob Hankins is very ill at the university cottage and it is not thought possible for him to recover. Mr. Hankins was paralyzed some months since and other complications have occurred to render his condition exceedingly painful.

The Daily Camera (Boulder, Colorado), Monday, 21 October 1895, p. 1
Mr. Hankins Dead.
Mr. Jacob Hankins passed away at his home before two o'clock this afternoon. Mr. Hankins has been a sufferer from a complication of difficulties for a long time. A stroke of paralysis about five years ago was the beginning of his physical ailments and since that time he has been growing gradually worse, with occasional periods of relief.
Mr. Hankins is father of James Hankins, the well known merchant of Boulder, who is a son by his first wife. Mr. Hankins was wedded a second time and his wife and three children, Martha, Lulu and Elton, the members of his present family, are left to mourn his loss. The remains will be sent to Monroe, Iowa, the old home of the family for interment.

The Daily Camera (Boulder, Colorado), Tuesday, 22 October 1895, p. 2
In Memoriam
Jacob Hankins died yesterday afternoon, October 21, at his home on University hill, after a severe illness which was really the culmination of a stroke of paralysis received about four years ago, having prior thereto always enjoyed exceptional health. At the time of his death he lacked only one day of being 73 years, 4 months old. The funeral services were held this afternoon in the Methodist church under the auspices of the Odd Fellows, of which order he had been a member for many years, and the body was then taken eastward on the evening train for burial at his former home, Monroe, Iowa.
Father Hankins had a large circle of Boulder friends, not a few of them (including among others the families of Hiskey, DeLong and Lounsbury) having enjoyed his acquaintance and know of his sterling qualities back in his old Iowa home. He was a considerate husband, a kind father, a rare neighbor, and a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal church. His bereft wife, Mrs. Margaret Hankins, is the capable and beloved matron of University dining hall. Of a family of nine children, only four survive the loss of their father, the eldest being our fellow townsman, James C. Hankins.
I don't know how much I can help you as I am from Sam's line, -father Jesse, grandfather,Frederick. I know I have Levi listed somewhere, but at the moment my records are in a bit of a mess (flooded with 4' water on first floor - was glad to have saved all my records) I have been to Ohio several times - visited cemeterys - one cousin from my line alive, late 80's. Will try if you send me your questions.

William Fletcher's son, William Frank Hulse is my grandfather, and his son, Albert Leo Hulse is my father. My records indicate George W. died February 7, 1929, in Ft.
Edmund Bemis

The many friends of Mr. Edmund Bemis in this, his former home, will regret very much to learn the sad intelligence in the following which we clip from the Longmont (Col.) Ledger.

During the day, on the night of which he died, which was Thursday June 7th, Mr. Bemis was in his usual health and engaged in doing some plowing. He returned to his house about six o'clock, saddled and mounted one of his horses, called his dog and started out to look up the cows. This was the last time he was seen alive. As the cows sometimes wander away in the timber, his wife did not feel any special alarm on account of his being absent longer than usual. But when about 10 o'clock, the dog returned alone, she felt certain that some serious accident had happened to him. The nearest neighbors were aroused, and a vigorous search was at once commenced. But there was no moon, and the sky soon became so thickly obscured by clouds of inky darkness, that it was impossible to see any object at the distance of five or six feet by the light of a lantern, and the search was of necessity abandoned until the appearance of daylight the next morning. But at the first show of light Friday morning the search was renewed, and the body was soon found at a distance of only about one fourth of a mile from the house. He was laying upon his face, with no indications of having been thrown from the animal he was riding, or of any struggle after he fell. His death was of course instantaneous, as he fell upon his face and forehead dislocating his neck.

The supposition is that he was suddenly attacked with faintness, which caused him to fall from his horse with the fatal result above stated. Some of the searchers during the night, passed within about fifteen feet of where the body was lying, but the darkness was so intense that the light of their lanterns did not enable them to discover it.

The deceased, Edmund Bemis, was born in the state of Massachusetts, and had attained the age of 69 years at the time of his death. The body was taken to Colorado Springs and given burial in "Evergreen Cemetery". He was a man of fine personal presence, well, informed on all general topics, possessing a genial temper, and higly esteemed by all his acquaintances.

The Enterprise, June 26, 1883, p. 4, col. 1-2, Evansville, Wisconsin

Gary, thanks for the note! I'm not related to the family - I live in Lafayette in Boulder County and like to help out on this board.

I see that Jane Strawbridge Williams is in Columbia Cemetery. See the great biographical notes here (click on the "More Info" link):
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bgs/columbia/columbia_w.ht...
Since Francis Marion Williams and Mary Gallagher Williams are also in section E28, it seems odd that Uriah is not listed. Maybe his burial was there, but the record has been lost.

If you get to Boulder, stop at the Carnegie branch of Boulder Public Library (on Pine west of Broadway) and look for Uriah in this book by Mary McRoberts (who is a gem!):
"Boulder County, Colorado deaths and the insane, 1859-1900: newspaper abstracts."
Gary,

In the public records database for Boulder County at http://www.bouldercounty.org/clerk/recording/search/icris.ht... (search last name first, such as "WILLIAMS UR") I see there are several recorded items for a Urial Williams. I'm betting this is Uriah, because the warranty deeds and deed of trust items all reference Township 3 North, Range 70 West, Section 35 (part of the section). This turns out to be around 40° 10' 37" N, -105° 11' 47" W, which is near Hygiene right in the area of the historical town of Pella.

Patricia,

The Longmont Public Library has an excellent newspaper index beginning in the 1870s. Normally I'd offer a lookup, but I'm afraid life is a whirlwind just now.

Why not try the library's reference service? The librarians can check the index and mail you a copy. I can't recall whether they ask for reimbursement before or after mailing the copies, but I do know it's a great service!

http://www.ci.longmont.co.us/Library/adult/ask_marian.htm

For what it's worth, a Boulder family headed by Edward C. Mallory, Jr., and Bertha Mallory is shown in the 1930 census with a 16-year-old son named Edward C. Mallory III. If he were a university student in August 1932, he would certainly be called a young student.

His father was a tractor salesman, a career which might have allowed him to fund a university education. The family lived at 504 Marine Street, not far from the university.

I have been researching Milton Bell Case, his 2nd wife Elisabeth Hobson and Their daughter (#4) Rosa Novella Case.

Rosa married Vett S. Reed. They had a son, George Edward.
Vett moved west and first settled on the banks of Lake Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. They later settled in Washington.

George Edward Reed married Lillie Ann Greenman in Spokane, Washington. One of their sons was named Vett H. Reed, born in Washington. Vett H. Married Caroline Ann Costich and they had two sons and one daughter. My Sister married their oldest son and they had two girls. I found your message board post and noticed you have complete dates of birth for everyone you listed. Your date of birth for Rausa Novella matches the date of birth that I obtained from a family member. Would you please let me know if you have the records or citations for all the dates? I try not to list an exact birth date in my tree, unless I have a record or citation for it.

Please reply yes or no and I will send contact information.

Thank you, Fishrmn 42
I will search again later today. I wll look up the land form the section numbers.

Thanks for this big lead.
Gary

I did not look for real estate transacitons but I did a cemetery search and could not find him. The Hygine Cenetery was not computerized so he could have been burried there or Old Valmont or may be back in Pennsylvania. The family Bible does have Decenber 21, 1887 as his death but no place. I think Uria williams and wife Jane Strawbridge, Francis Williams and wife Mary Galligher and the galligher family came out possibly all at once 1879-80. I am in Colorado and can do some research. My address is gary_huffman@q.com. I have copies of 5 pages out of Uriah's family bible if you want them.

Gary

I found information of Uriah Williams Form his family Bible. His family are burried in the in the Columbia Cemetery in Boulder Colorado. The online information has census information as well as parts of obits. I can't find Uriah though. He is not in the 1895 Colorado census. He did die December 21, 1887 according to his family Bible.

fishrmn42 - I am a CASE from Milton Bell Case's brother's branch. Although I don't have specific documentation re: Rausa/Rosa's birthday, there is probably enough census material to substantiate a year, if not a month, of her birth. Good luck!

Your sister's children are descended from two Revolutionary War patriots from New Jersey. He died 10 July 1898 0f stomach/liver trouble.

*006:077; BN 14 Jul 1898:8; BDC 11 Jul 1898:4; marker
Biography: Mrs. George Whitten purchaser 31 Oct 1898 'C34 SW' (DB) There is a mixup here in the Deed Book probably. On 31 Oct 1898 the estate of James M. Bateman purchased C34 SW. The marker for George Whitten is southeast of E69. Is the marker in the wrong place? George had been feeble a long time. He was lately in business on 13th Street. Funeral 12 July at undertaker Sullivan's. Mrs. Effie Whitten married 18 May 1899 Willard Brandon at his home 1613 18th St. by Rev. M.D. Hornbeck. (BDC 19 May 1899:1; MR) Willard and Effie not on the 1900 Boulder County, CO census.(Mar 2005 update)
The above is a bio that the cemetery has on history.George was the proprietor of the New York Bazaar on 13th Street.
Hope this helps,
Frank
