Found family members on the 1850 census, enumerated "on the Cosumnes River" in Sacramento County. They were mining for gold.

Does anyone know where on the Cosumnes this may have been? The census taker's name was Charles S. Coffinberry, and the date the information was recorded was 16 Sept 1850.

I tried sending message to sssteed@sbcglobal.net about the above subject. It didn't go through. If you wish to contact me do so. Loyal and Eliza Moore as well as her brother George were on the Cosumnes River mining gold also according to 1850 census.

I myself am seeking more information on Loyal Madison & Eliza Ann (Finch)Moore, Gideon Devore, and George Finch which I already have information on but always looking for more and willing to share what I have. Gideon Devore was in the 1850 census in El Dorado County mining and later came to Amador County. George Finch was the son of Jonathan and Eliza Finch who came out from Wisconsin in about 1853 with the rest of the Finch Family as well as Loyal and Eliza's two sons George W. and Loyal C. Moore. It was in Jan of 1854 that Gideon Devore married Lydia Finch at the 'Moore Ranch" in Prairie Township near White Rock as well as Prairie City.

Anyway, I don't know anything about the names you mention---were any of them from Missouri?
The families I am trying to follow came from Missouri, supposedly in a wagon train led by Hiram Hughes which arrived in Placerville in Aug. 1850. I have been able to find Hiram on several census reports, including 1850 in El Dorado County, running a hotel, I believe. ( I'm away from home right now, so don't have docs with me.) I had asked about the mining camp on the Cosumnes because that is where some related persons were ennumerated, and I wondered if they were at Michigan Bar.

The person I am really trying to find is John Hughes, the uncle of Hiram and my direct relative. He was supposed to be with his nephew's train, but I haven't found him yet.

I live in Placerville, so if anything I can help with, let me know.

Great, you just live down the block.I was at the 100 year Anniversery of gold discovery at Coloma in January1948. Spent many hours at Placerville Grayhound station trying to get back to Sacramento that day.

I didn't expect you to know of those I listed. Just to show something in common on the Cosumnes. The sbc as well as innercite emails did not work. How can we comm. outside this forum? I am looking for a Arthur or Otto Petersen that had a Beer Parlor between the El Dorado county line and Placerville. I looked in the Phone Books avail. in the State Library and they did not ring a bell with the person that told me about visiting him in about 1951. Are there El Dorado county Records that might have his name in them. Wifes name was Cruzita Peterson
He may have had living quarters in same building.

Found gr gr grandfather James Kimsey on 1850 census stating census was taken on Comnues River. He is listed with other miners. I am not sure if this is really him. Is there any other listing of those staying on the river? He married in 1850 in Missouri so was surprised to see same name listed in CA. Would appreciate any help in finding anything to verify his identity.

I counted the number on the Cosumnes by looking at every page that was headed Cosumnes River Sacramento County. I have not heard from Shannon Steed anymore as you can see on the board.

I can't remember how many names there were.
For some reason Ancestry don't have the family I am interested in, in their 1850 census info. I found them on the microfilm at the LDS Research Center here in Sacramento on Eastern Ave. I'm pretty sure I found them in the State Library on there Microfilm.

Its possible to be on 2 census in 2 states depending on when the census was taken. Check the dates and then figure the travel time. On the other hand the California census didn't start till September I believe as they weren't admitted to the union till then and word of it didn't reach California till October. They did get a jump on it though.

I don't know of any other listing or why there would be one. Compare Ancestry census and LDS Census records.

Thanks for the help. I am not still convinced that the two James Kimsey's are the same. The Ca census was 9th of Oct
the MO census was 29th of Oct. James is listed in Big Creek, Henry county, Mo. as are an Alexander and an Alfred.
The same three names are listed on that 1850 Ca census.
I know nothing about travel times during that time period.Do you think that they could have made it back to Mo in that 20 day time frame. The ages match up pretty well for them. Will try to get to the LDS history center to compare the census they have. Thanks again...Carolyn

Travel time depends on which route was taken naturaly. A book I have (The World Rushed In, by JS Holliday) gives a travel time of 270 days using Lassen's Cut-off. The other Route's overland were Truckee Trail, and Carson Trail. These were shorter than the Lassen. Then there was the Ithumas of Panama, and around the Horn. You could also go the southern route and come out in Southern California.


With both being in October it would have been impossible.

I did visit the El Dorado County Museum research room last week before we left town. In spite of the kind help of the volunteers there, no postive mention could be found of Arthur/Otto Peterson or his wife Cruzita. There were some records for an Arthur Petersen on the county clerk's website:

Follow the link and search "recorder's index by name" to view the records. When we are back in town, I will be glad to look at NewspaperArchive, also. The Mountain Democrat has been around a long time, but archive searches now require a fee.

One thing that made searching difficult was not know which area between the county line and Placervile that the beer parlor was located----east, west, the town of Lotus or Latrobe in the other direction? Do you have any more info that would give that detail?

I also wondered if the state liquor licensing agency keep records back that far.
