missing Collins family photos

I am sure that if there are plenty of my great aunts as young ladies, then there should be more than 1 photo of their brothers and parents. however, that's all I have.
if anyone sees photos in a Tulare Co. shop of Collins folk, especially Francis aka Frank Lee Collins and Mary Jane Peyton Collins or their sons James Lewis Collins and Thomas Francis Collins, from circa 1850 to the 1960's, either at an antique shop or in a museum, please let me know.

for identifying photos which have no name on them, the photos most likely were taken in Visalia, though some may be taken in San Francisco as the family travelled to San Francisco.

everyone in the family has very high cheek bones.

Francis looks like his hair is medium-light brown, slightly wavy and I think he may part it on the right and combs it strait back on top, and has light colored, deep set eyes with low, angular eyebrow ridges. he has a high forehead. in the one photo I have he wears his hair short and has a short, trimmed beard, no mustache. his ears protrude a fair amount and have a strait edge to them on the sides, and the lobes of his ears are fairly strait, as well. he does not have broad shoulders. he appears to have the fair skin with ruddy cheeks look. his lips, both top and bottom, are thin and his nose is medium and appears to be strait. from what I can see of his jaw it appears to be long and moderately square, and it does not appear to me that he has a weak chin-it appears to be a strong one, as his children and descendants have.

Mary Jane is sort of raw bone looking. again, the very high cheek bones, light, deep set eyes, strong chin, medium, strait nose. her ears also protrude, but aren't quite as block shaped as Francis' ears. long dark brown hair parted in the middle tied back with a ribbon...or in a snood, I can't tell for certain, thin upper lip, medium lower lip. high forehead. long neck. right eye slightly higher than left. wide jawbone. low eyebrow ridges.

the sons are likely to look AmerIndian or Jewish, as their sisters and their descendants do. we are looking into that puzzle through dna since records aren't answering the questions.

we have just one photo of the sons, taken together, and I don't know which is which. but that photo eludes me at the moment. however, they look rather like their father, with some minor differences.

I am happy to pay reasonable prices for the photos, if found
My g-grandpa lived in Tulare county off and on from approximately 1942 to 1960. He was disabled... he only had one leg. He did not work. Is there some sort of pension or state disablity, etc. that he would've lived off of, other than Social Security? He would've had to have paid into SS at one time to be able to qualify for that, right? (Because I know he didn't ever pay in) He didn't live off of family, because the family seemingly hated him. Any ideas of where he would've been getting money?

I am looking for any descendants of John Jolly CAIRNS as I am doing my CAIRNS Family Tree he was my g,g,grandfather James's brother and I would welcome any data also I found below on another site. TIA

Regards
skut
NZ

John J. (Jolly) Cairns was a big man at better than 6 feet and was born in Scotland. Prior to coming to California he was involved in sheep herding in Australia and New Zealand.

In 1890 John came to the Lindsay area and before long he farmed about 100,000 acres of grain. Being a man of vision, he felt that the land was very fertile and temperate and reasoned that if a stable water supply could be developed, it could support citrus and fruit trees. He learned from the sheep herders that you could dig a shallow pit in the ground and that the water would not dry up even though the sheep were drinking it. He concluded that the water must be fed by an underground river and that therefore he might pump irrigation water from this river to the surface and thereby produce a stable source of water for grapes, citrus and fruit trees. This concept was arguably one of the most important concepts on modern irrigation in the west. His fellow farmers thought that he was crazy and that any water would be pumped up to the surface and then the well would go dry. He then ordered a 10 HP Byron Jackson pump from San Francisco and had it delivered by rail to Tulare. As he took his buckboard to Tulare he was labeled as Crazy Cairns for his foolish experiment.

He set the pump in a 20 foot by 20 foot pit and dug a 30 foot well below the pump. He then used a Berry steam engine to drive the pump via a long leather belt. The experiment was a huge success and the 14 inch casing produced approximately 1,000 gallons of water per minute.

I am looking for information about this old tank house/pump station I happened upon the other day. It's located just west of the town of Plainview. It's just off the road in an orange grove. As I first saw it I thought "that looks like a light house". I stopped and it's a neat old place , ivy has grown almost to the top of this tower. The tower has a red tiled roof as does the building that stands below. The main building is built in the Mission style. At one time it looks as though it had arched wooden doors at each end. The place looks as though it was built in the 30's. Any info would be appreciated.

Moore And Hill Families

Searching for the first name of Miss MOORE, who was born in Texas. Her husband, John HILL (1822-1909), was listed as a widow in the 1880 Census (recorded in Kaweah And Mineral King). They had several children that died in Tulare county including George William HILL (1862-1946), Robert Lee HILL (1871-1964) and Frank J. HILL (1867-1958).

I strongly believe Miss MOORE to be a daughter of Esther (born circa 1809 in Illinois) and Unknown MOORE. Having come from Tarrant County, Texas, this family can be found in Tulare County census records as early as 1860. By this time, Esther was married to David STONG (c.1815-1898).

Two brothers of Miss MOORE are Elias Jordan MOORE (1849-1906) who married Annie HART, and William Wilder MOORE (c.1846-1909) who married Sarah CORTNER. Both MOORE brothers are buried in Eshom Valley Cemetery.

Thank you,
Jeannie
http://genealogygenie.blogspot.com/

Lansing D. WOOLLEY married Eliza J. Harcourt Feb 4, 1897 in Tulare County. Eliza later filed Civil War pension request on Lansig, claiming he had 'gone off prospecting and never returned, presumed dead' sometime in 1900. Lansig then shows up in Voters Register in 1903-1916, and obituary index shows his obituary on Dec 30, 1918 in Porterville Evening Recorder. Elizabeth's pension request records state 'sometime later a skeleton was found in the mountains near where he went prospecting and assumed to be Lansig.

Is their an obituary available for this Lansig Woolley? He does not show up any cemetery listing.

Also, in the Voters Register(s), he is listed as political affiliation 'soc.'. There appears to not be an abbreviation list. 'Rep.', 'dem.', 'D.S.' and 'pro.' and other listings are shown. Is soc short for socialist?

This Lansing was born Pennsylvania, McKean County, then resided in Iowa where he fought in Civil War. The 1900 census records for him lists born in Missouri but this is not correct.

My great-great grandfather Charles Cameron died in Dinuba according to the Acton Free Press in Esquesing, Ontario on 2/26/1914. He and 2 daughters, Mrs. Alice or Amy Cameron Cairns(Mrs. W.J.) and Minnie Martha Cameron-Prout-Switzer (Mrs. Richard C)(born 10/24/1866) moved to Dinuba in Tulare County in 1910. Minnie and her family are listed in the 1920 national census as Richard C., Minnie, Samuel W(son), Orvil C(son), and Alice A.(daughter)(born 1902-1905 in Canada). They are Employer and laborers at a fruit farm, living at Alta Avaview(sp?) North Dinuba: enumeration district 195, sheet one, Dinuba Township(Keweah).

I am looking for any information on MCNITTs who lived in Porterville, Tulare Co. CA in the late 1800s. The family of LYMAN A. MCNITT appeared in the 1890 census. Lyman was born in Niagara Co. NY, moved to Van Buren Co. MI, and Boone Co. NE before coming to CA sometime after 1881. My GGfather was ANDREW BENJAMIN MCNITT who was married in Boone Co NE and was living in CA as a prospector in 1894 after my grandmother was born. After his wife died in 1905, he married JULIA ROSE GREGORY who was from CA. I am not sure about the relationship of Andrew and Lyman.

Obituary: James Frederick CORTNER

Obtain from The Fresno Bee, Fresno, CA, 15 May 1896

A FATAL MISTAKE

Strychnine is Administered Instead of Quinine.

The Visalia Times gives the particulars of the death of J. F. Cortner as follows:

The remains of James F. Cortner of Stokes valley were laid to rest in the Exeter cemetery today. His death occurred about noon Saturday at his homestead and came about through a terrible mistake, innocently made by Tolbert Cortner, a brother of the deceased.

James had been feeling indisposed for several days last week and on Saturday kept his bed. His brother had been instructed to give James a dose of quinine and shortly before noon fixed up a dose of white powder that he supposed was quinine from a quinine bottle on the table. The hose was swallowed by James and soon the symptoms of poisoning began to develop. Then Tolbert discovered his fatal mistake. By some unaccountable means the strychnine bottle had been exchanged and a dose of the deadly white poison had been administered to the sick man. Before help could be summoned James died. His death has prostrated his brother.

A coroner's inquest was held by Deputy Locey Sunday at the residence of S. L. N. Ellis, who is a brother-in-law of the deceased. A verdict of accidental death in accordance with the facts was rendered.

These three children went to California with Nick and are: Jane who married Charley Trevis, Nancy who married Charley Schultz and Wesley (died in KS on a visit..wife unk).

Porterville Evening Recorder
December 24, 2002

Linda Menne

To celebrate the life of Linda Menne is to celebrate her unique way of embracing the world and the people with the good fortune to share hers.
Linda's family was a great source of joy and the recipients of her gift and passion for researching/recording genealogy. She kept contact with relatives near and far. She was the curator of a broad range of family memories, including annual dove hunts on the Frank and Helen Menne ranch, the youthful adventures of her beloved nieces and nephews, and her own stories of bucking hay, working cattle, and working and traveling with her brother Frank Menne Jr.
Her never-wavering work ethic and commitment to timeliness, community and world events, and good habits made her a teacher of core values. She had a reputation for preparedness, from her at-hand medical and snake-bite kit to a quick pen and paper when needed and her impeccable notations of annual rainfall - the mark of a dedicated ranch woman and farmer.
Among her contributions to her community, she was a dedicated volunteer at local elections.
Her strong opinions and reliable Menne memory made her a force to be reckoned with - attention to detail made for Linda's quick and immediate correction of inaccuracies.
She was an enthusiastic participant at all family and community festivities; she could engage in conversation at all levels and was comfortable in a crowd. She was always last to leave a good festive occasion, her enthusiasm never waned.
Linda's positive attitude and spiritual strength was manifested in her stubborn defiance of the adversities of poor health and major illness throughout her life.
She never complained nor let anything stand in her way. The daughter of Frank and Helen Menne, the granddaughter of Ducor pioneers John and Josephine Menne, her life embodied the pioneer spirit of her family tree.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Her unique sparkle will live on and inspire the many lives she touched.

Hello,

I am looking for any information people may have on the surname Espindula. My Great Grandfather's name was possibly Jose Espindula or Espinola. He came to the Turlock area from the Azore Islands. He was married to a Tekla Espindula and then later married my Great Grandmother Emily Espindula maiden name Quadros de Souza.

Miller, he was killed in an auto accident in south Texas. I was in Tulare one summer to meet my birth mother, but didnt knoe his parents were there, or thar he was buried there at that point. I was in touch with one of his brothers one time, but lost his address and info. I was told that his mother had a baby picture of me, that said JDs baby girl. He had two sisters that used to live there. One was: Shirley, the other I think was, Nelda. If any one can help me, I would really appreciate it. I would really like to have a picture of him, if nothing else. I now live in Louisiana. I was born in 1954, after I was born, my birth mother and JDs brother Dick, came both came down with TB. This is about all I can tell you. Thank you in advance for any help. Gayle

She was born in Parke County Indiana around 1900. She also had a daughter named Grace Marie. I believe she has children and grandchildren living in the area but cannot get in touch with them. Her funeral was at the Bible Baptist church in Porteville CA conducted by Rev Terry Williams. Burial was at Chapel of Light in Fresno by Myers Funeral Home. All the burial information taken from a letter sent to my Uncle in Arkansas. Any additional information will be greatly appreicated.

My Gr Uncle Raleigh Heath said that as a boy he saw the metalic casket arrive home.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Seeking a kind soul to locate my ancestor's gravemarker and transcribe and photograph it for me. My ancestor's name is Isaac C. GLENN, b. either 1829 or 1831 in TN, died OCT 1862, further details here: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&...

Per data found at the following link, he is buried at the Visalia Cemetery.
http://www.cagenweb.com/cpl/tulare/tcemvis1920.htm#g

I wish to verify the information reported with this link since it differs by two years with his 1860 census. I'm also hoping to discover whether he was related to Alexander and Rebecca GLENN, perhaps based on the proximity of his grave to theirs. They are apparently buried with the CHATTEN family.

Thanks, Matt

My great uncle, Sixtus Johnson "Jack" Martineau, was employed with the Mt. Whitney Lumber Co. in Johnsondale around 1942 for a number of years. His death certificate (1983) states that he had perviously worked for the Kernville Lumber Company.

He and wife,Izora Alexander Martineau, both last resided in Modesto (buried in Lakewood Mem. Park in Hughson) but possibly might have lived in Turlock during the 40's-50s.

Would like to know if there are any employement records of these two businesses or any history available. Are there area phone/city directories for Turlock and surrounding areas that someone has access to and could check for me for 40's/50's?

I am compiling family history on Jack and Izora Martineau and Jack's parents and siblings. Jack and Izora had no children and he did not keep in contact with the rest of his family. I'm having a difficult time piecing his life together. Any help appreciated.
