Thank you for the offer, I truly appreciate it. But I already have this information, a great deal of which is false.
1. John Thornton Edwards was my great-grandfather. His wife, Amy, WAS NOT married to Halstead and Powell! John T's son by a first marriage was John HUGH Edwards. John HUGH's wife was Josephine Levally Halstead Powell. She had three children by Powell. I even have a family photo of John H., Josie, Roy Powell and John and Josie's three children, Olive, Elizabeth and Hazel.
2. John Thornton's wife was Amy Orcelia Winters. To further confuse things, she also had been married previously to a man named Rudd and had a daughter, Mary Emma Rudd, who also went by her step-father's name of Edwards. John Thornton and Amy had six children: Nettie, Marshall, Wyman, Curtis, Amy Orcelia and Lulu Etta. The above is confirmed not only by family history but from US Census records. I have birthdates for most of these people and death dates for a number of them.
3. John Thornton Edwards WAS NOT, as far as I can determine, a Civil War Vet. First, inquiries to the CA agency holding records of the CA vets, and to the national records turns up no one named John Edwards who is of the right age, description and color. Secondly, one of the questions on the 1900 US census asks if the individual is a survivor of either the Union or Confederate forces, and to this the answer is no.
I realize that much of this mis-information can be traced to the Keith Lingenfelter Archives. Unfortunately, it has taken on a life of its own, especially now that it is accessible on the Internet. What many people fail to realize is that the statements he makes are compiled from a variety of sources with no attempt made to verify any of it, and no sources given so it isn't possible to evaluate what is said. He and his researchers made assumptions about who was related to whom and stated them as if they were proven facts.
My grandparents were Franklin WARREN -- not William -- and Nettie Maria Edwards Graham. The Grahams were also early settlers in Manton, and I have found errors in Lingenfelter's statements about them as well. (William Graham was Franklin's father.)
You would be doing genealogists and family historians a great service if this information could somehow be flagged and at least opposing points of view included along with the mis-information instead of just continuing to distribute incorrect information without comment.
Sorry to rant on. I know you're just trying to help, but I find this whole situation with the Lingenfelter Archives very frustrating.
