There is a GOSSAGE Street here in Petaluma, GOSSAGE is one of the names I am researching in Missouri. The family says some of the GOSSAGE cousins came west way back when, does anyone have a connection to the family in Sonoma Co. and can anyone tell me who GOSSAGE St. in Petaluma was named after? Thanks!

There was a John D. Gossage who managed hotels in Santa Rosa and San Francisco. He came from Iowa and was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Son of Samuel Benton Gossage and Lucinda Glasscock

There are six (6) GOSSAGEs buried in the Canfield Cemetery in Sonoma County, just west of Petaluma:

Edw. B. (son of J&E) 1866-1875
Frank d.1861 a.3
George d.1861 a.9
John B. 1820-1862
Martha wife of W.Z. d.1859 a.28
Zephaniah 1825-1876

This is from page 33 of the book, Sonoma County Cemetery Records 1846-1921, as originally recorded by the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) and republished by the Sonoma County Genealogical Society in 1976 and again in 1999. There is more information in the book than I have entered here; contact me privately by email if you want all of it.

I researched this cemetery for my forthcoming book, Cemeteries of Sonoma County, California, A History and Guide (to be published early 2003 by Heritage Books). I discovered (16 June 2001) that all of the GOSSAGE stones were missing. I have no idea why this happened. I wrote all of this up for the Sonoma County Library where it is on file as "Canfield Cemetery/Jeremy Nichols/June 2001" in the Local History and Genealogy Annex. I would be very interested in figuring out what happened to the GOSSAGE markers.

Hi Jeremy, I assume your book has been published. Zephaniah Gossage is my maternal great, great grandfather. Appreciate any information.
