Well, you are not giving me much to go on. Did your Harold ever live in Napa, CA? That is where mine lived. His father married a second time after Ethel Piner died in 1919. Her name was Olive/Olivia???. She was born ca 1888 CA. She probably had been married previously, but I have no information.

Revae

Hmm. While there are certainly similarities, I don't know if this is the same person. The child of Harold and Aimee is my father-in-law and he says that his father was adopted by the Wilson family. However he has no information about that part of his family.

Assuming Eleanor got married between the 1920 & 1930 census (she would have been about 18 in 1923), IF she got married in San Francisco, you could look at the San Francisco county records in FamilySearch:
https://familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https%3A%2F%...

These are browsable, but not searchable. Look in the bride's index, which are broken up by year.

Since Gertrude is in the San Francisco city directories from 1927 on (she was in Vallejo before that), it's just a possibility that Eleanor married in San Francisco.

I think it could be the same man. Eric Emil Okerlund is listed in the California Voter Registration for 1907 in San Francisco.

Voter registration: http://search.ancestry.com/browse/view.aspx?dbid=1249&ii...

There is an Eric Okerlund buried in San Francisco National Cemetery, DOD Apr 14, 2012, according to Find a Grave. No birthdate is listed. The Gertrude Okerlund that you posted the 1910 census for is widowed in the 1920 census, so that could be her husband Eric.

1920 census: http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&...

Other references to Eric E.
Chabot Terrace Public Housing Complex of Solano County

Thank you for writing and for the transcription about Chabot Terrace’s designers. I'm sure Misters Wurster and Kump never planned on actually living in one of these “units.”

Yes, these houses were nothing more than single-family barracks strung together in ugly rows. They were not built on concrete slabs, so each had an enclosed basement of sorts. Families who stored stuff in these basements did so at the mercy of thieves. Three were caught under our house on Alaska Street on three separate occasions. The Chinese guy residing next door caught at least two more under his house. Even if nobody understood a word he said, that Chinaman knew how to give a proper tongue-lashing.

I’ve come to realize a lot of early information about Chabot Terrace must have been classified for war purposes. Back then, especially during the war, the press would have honored requests to withhold anything connected to Mare Island and its supporting infrastructure.

But Chabot Terrace survived long after the war where it quickly became a low-rent slum. I was born in 1944 and lived there a few years during the 1950’s. I didn’t shed one tear upon departing for the newly-built army base housing at The Persidio Army Base in San Francisco.

And I’m sure the citizens of Vallejo rejoiced when the Chabot Terrace demolish orders were finally acted upon.
Re: Addendum: Chabot Terrace Public Housing Complex of Solano County, built circa 1943

You may have this already, but didn't see it in the thread. My dad lived in Chabot Terrace as a small boy and attended first grade at least. His dad was working at Mare Island during the war and I think the family was there ca 1944-46. I have a photo somewhere of him standing in front of the "house." And here is some info about the designers of the housing:

1942, East Bay, Chabot Terrace, Vallejo, Wurster and Bernardi

In the railroad-run decade of the 1870s, great things were forecast for Vallejo--principally that it would surpass Oakland--but this also was false prophecy. By 1880 the place had settled for 6,000 souls. It was this modest town that experienced the stunning World War II invasion of shipyard workers who were housed in every available place including virtual cities built overnight, like Chabot Terrace, Wurster and Bernardi, 1942, which provided 3,000 units of housing but no schools (Gebhard, Winter, and Sandweiss 1985: 243).

At Chabot Terrace, a few miles outside of Vallejo on the north, and Carquinez Heights, south of town, more than 5000 dwellings were erected practically overnight. Some of the Bay Area's most distinguished designers, including William W. Wurster and Ernest Kump, took part in these developments. Their design in hindsight seems almost a caricature of the barracks idea. Hundreds of little identical shelters, lined up mechanically, marched up hill and down dale, without schools, community facilities, without even sewers.

Taken individually, the barracks-like little houses looked right out of the artless Wurster tradition of residential design. They were soundly laid out internally. The triumph, though, in this Vallejo work was the extraordinary rationalization of the construction process itself. Two assembly lines, one based on wallboard technology, the other on plywood, were set up. In production terms, the result must have been among the first real successes in factory-built housing. Perhaps the most interesting incident in the Bay Area with respect to war housing construction appeared as an offshoot of the Vallejo projects and their concern with production processes. Wurster and his team convinced the federal authorities to release a small amount of material and money for experimental work. Largely under the guidance of Fred and Lois Langhorst, who were employed in Wurster's firm, twenty-five dwellings were designed and built as demonstrations of constructional alternatives to the standaridized factory-built barracks. At the time this experiment had no direct influence on the course of war housing. But these twenty-five units received more attention in the architectural press than all the other thousands of houses in Vallejo and the Bay Area (Woodbridge 1988: 238.
I was only five years old when we lived there. You are right, it was a mess. We left in 1953. I remember having the door open in the summer because it was do hot. People of other races would walk by our door and throw watermelons through the screen and they would splatter in our living-room. I remember some lady coming out and hitting me with a broom because I was playing on the sidewalk near her front door. That place was a nightmare. There were guns going off through the night, so we were not allowed outside after dark.

In this case, I got lucky. I first searched the Solano County phone book for the year that Susan Tanner passed away and found Carroll Tanner listed in Benicia. That led me to the conclusion that Susan Tanner may have been living in Benicia when she passed away. I just happen to have a book published by Ivolue Lantrip (who passed away in 2003) indexing the Passalacqua Funeral Home Records. I know that that is the only funeral home in Benicia. I searched that book and found the information I provided in my reply.

As far as funeral home records being a great source of information, it depends on the funeral home. Some funeral homes have gone out of business and their records may not be available or difficult to find. Some funeral homes that are still in business may not be genealogist-friendly. There is one funeral home in this area that will not give you any information unless "you have a court order." I have found other funeral homes to be quite helpful.

Thank you for getting back with me on this matter. I do not know where exactly in Solano County this person died, but if I had to make a guess I would say she probably died in Vallejo as that is where she lived for most of her life. The person I am interested in is Bernice P. Tiernan (nee Hahn) and she died according to the California Death Index on October 21, 1996. If you can possibly find an obituary for her I would greatly appreciate it.

Craig A. Hahn

Thank you so much. How do you access funeral home records? That sounds like a great source of information!

I found Carroll Tanner listed in the Benicia telephone books in 1976 through 1983 living at 300 East H Street. She was not listed before or after that. Susan Tanner was not listed in any of those telephone books.

The following information is extracted from the Passalacqua Funeral Home Records:

Susan R. Tanner, widow
born: 15 May 1889, NE
died: 7 Nov 1977, Benicia, CA
burial: Omaha, NE
residence: Benicia, CA
Catholic
father: Ignatiais Niemoller, born in Germany
mother: Susan Stone, birth place unknown

I was unable to find an obituary for Susan Tanner in either the Benicia or Vallejo newspapers.

Was probably living with her daughter, Carroll Susan Tanner ?. Could someone please help me find Susan R N Tanner's obit? I'm particularly interested in any grandchildren listed.
Thank you very much for checking on this. The CA Death Index has her death in Solano County, which is why I'm looking there for her obituary. Since she grew up in Placer County, maybe I'll check there next.
Thanks again...

There is one paper in Vacaville. There was not an obituary for any Fanning in 1990. Sorry.

I was not able to find a grave site.

Solano County death database does not list this person as a death in the county. They do list a death for Bea Fanning in 1990. But, I could not find an obituary for her either.

first name: Daisy
middle name: Charlotte
last name: Fanning
name suffix:
birth date: 12 July 1894
social security number: 548-40-3663
place of issuance: California
last residence: Vacaville, Solano, California
zip last residence: 95687
death date: 4 March 1990
estimated age at death: 96

Social Security Death Index:
Henry W. Forehand, born 4 June 1917, died 20 Jan 1999, "last residence:" Vacaville, Solano Co. CA.
--The "last residence" on the SSDI is NOT necessarily where a person actually lived or died. The Social Security Administration calls it simply the "home of record." It is not necessarily where any benefit was paid to the person, survivor, or the lumpsum death benefit (in 1999 it was paid to anyone paying burial expenses, family member, funeral home, city/county, attorney). It is sometimes the location where the notification of death was sent to the SSA, sometimes where the lump sum death benefit was sent.

Henry is buried in Contra Costa County:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=fo...;

Nell Ray appears to be the daughter of Arthur J and Miranda, living in East Eldorado, Saline Co, IL in the 1930 Census; and in the 1940 Census.
--The CA Death Index:
Nell Bernice (Ray) Forehand died 19 June 1995 in Contra Costa County. She was born 29 June 1921 in Illinois.

The Contra Costa County Recorder
http://www.criis.com/contracosta.html
has a number of documents recorded in the names of Henry W and Nell B Forehand. One is an Affidavit/Declaration of Death filed on 2/17/1999. Also filed was a copy of a Trust documentation. These filings are usual after death to dispose of property or financial settlements. These documents would indicate if there were family members/heirs. In 1995, Henry revoked a trust and documented a deed (property).

I could not find a court case (Probate, etc) in Contra Costa County.

"IF" there were no children or family in the area, there might not have been an obituary for Henry. I'd suggest you search for Nell's obit, which Henry may have provided funds. I'd contact the cemetery to see if they have any information (Death certificate, obit, etc). If they can provide the name of the funeral home, contact them, they may have written the obit or have other records. They may not provide you with information, but I have seen persons providing a self addressed stamped envelope with a letter to forward to the family.
