Sarah was born in 1873 near Roseburg, OR and Chris was born 1870 in Hanover, Germany. CHris had a butcher shop in Etna. He died there in 1919. Sarah died in Etna in 1957. Both are buried in the Etna Cemetery. If anyone has any info on this family, please let me know.
Thanks, Jana Stanley
My name is Michele and I have been researching these surnames for over 9 years. All of my family come from Siskiyou County since around the mid 1800's. I have many pictures of the early Siskiyou County and many school photo's with everyone's names. I'd like to share my
information and pictures with anyone out there interested. If you had family in or around Hornbrook, Henley, Cottonwood, Bray, Tennant, Butte Valley, Yreka, and some Etna, I have tons to share. And If I don't have it my relatives do. Look forward to your responses.

Eugene Terwilliger, man of mystery

I'm tracking Millie / Mittie Agers, who married Eugene D. Terwilliger. Does anyone know when/where Eugene was born and died?

Details follow.

Siskiyou Cemeteries (Evergreen) has:
Terwilliger, Ada C. Sep 4, 1859 - Apr 29, 1881
Plot 6-1-1;
Age 21Y 7M 25D. Wife of Eugene D. Terwilliger.
(An old post on this board says she is Ada Camp.)

Siskiyou Cemeteries (Marriage Register) has:
Groom: Terwilliger, Eugene D
Bride: Ager, Mittie
16-Jan-1901 Book 7, page 1

Siskiyou Cemeteries (Little Shasta) has:
Terwilliger, Mittie Ager; Oct 11, 1871 - Nov 6, 1907; Wife of Eugene D. Terwilliger

Siskiyou Cemeteries URL:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~casiskiy/index.htm

In the 1870 Census (Table Rock, Siskiyou, California; Roll: M593_89; Page: 645; Image: 607.) we find:

Sidney Terwilliger, 40
Phebe Terwilliger, 37
Eugene D Terwilliger, 15
Isabelle S Terwilliger, 13
Andrew Terwilliger, 11
Frank Terwilliger, 10
Mary Jane Terwilliger, 8
Willie Terwilliger, 5
Edgar Terwilliger, 3
Katie Terwilliger, 1

In 1880 (Table Rock, Siskiyou, California; p. 294B on the LDS) we find

(Name, Relation, Marital Status, Gender, Race, Age, Birthplace, Occupation, Father's Birthplace, Mother's Birthplace)

P. S. Terwilliger, Self, M, Male, W, 50, NY, Farmer, NY, NY,
Phebe Terwilliger, Wife, M, Female, W, 47, NY, Keeping House, NY, Ct,
Eugene Terwilliger, Son, S, Male, W, 25, Ca, Laborer, NY, NY,
Isabel Terwilliger, Dau, S, Female, W, 23, Ca, School Teacher, NY, NY,
Andrew Terwilliger, Son, S, Male, W, 21, Ca, Carpenter, NY, NY,
Frank Terwilliger, Son, S, Male, W, 20, Ca, Laborer, NY, NY,
Mary J. Terwilliger, Dau, S, Female, W, 18, Ca, At Home, NY, NY,
William Terwilliger, Son, S, Male, W, 15, Ca, At Home, NY, NY,
Edgar Terwilliger, Son, S, Male, W, 13, Ca, At Home, NY, NY,
Katie Terwilliger, Dau, S, Female, W, 11, Ca, At Home, NY, NY,
Gussie Terwilliger, Dau, S, Female, W, 6, Ca, NY, NY,
Susie Hill, Other, S, Female, W, 19, Ca, Music Teacher, Ma, Ma,
James Williams, Other, S, Male, W, 20, Ca, Laborer, Mo, Mo,
Antown Silva, Other, S, Male, W, 21, Portugal, Laborer, Portugal, Portugal

So far, so good. Eugene, son of Sidney and Phoebe, is born 1855. He is single at the time the 1880 was taken. He marries Ada, 4 years younger than he, after the enumerator comes through. She dies very shortly after.

In 1900 there is an Eugene is living with his mother, Phoebe, in Table Rock, Siskiyou, California:

Pheobe Terwilliger, 67, New York, White, Head
Eugene D Terwilliger, 32, California, NY, CT., White, Son
[I looked at the image; it says Son, born May, 1868, age 32, in a reasonably clear hand]

The rest of the household:
William D Martin, 18, California, White, Grandson
Harry McGrath, 22, California, White, Boarder
William Simpson, 21, California, White, Boarder
James M Young, 19, Kansas, White, Boarder
Morton Earhart, 18, California, White, Boarder
George A Truap, 16, California, White, Boarder
Egbert T Robins, 21, South Dakota, White, Boarder
Charles E Stevens, 37, Wisconsin, White, Boarder
Fred W Talcott, 24, New York, White, Boarder
Chinaman Jim, 61, China, Ch, Cook
Chinaman Toy, 57, China, Ch, Servant

A widowed Phoebe is taking in boarders. They may be drawn by the reputation of her cook and laundryman. Both Chinese gentlemen undoubtedly had three names, as all Chinese do, but the round-eyed barbarian enumerator just wrote "Jim, Chinaman" and "Toy, Chinaman."

Look at Eugene, though; b. 1868. The Eugene here could not have married Ada C. who died in 1881. Even if she died on her wedding night, he would have been 13 years old when they wed.

My Mittie or Millie Ager, b. 1871, marries an Eugene D. Terwilliger in 1901, when she is 29. The 1855 birth date for Eugene fits best, given the (sexist) customs of the times. An old maid school teacher had to take what she could get, and he was usually 10 - 20 years older then she.

An 1868 birth date for Eugene fits too, if love blossomed in later life. ("Later' in 1900 was after age 25.) He was just a couple of years older than her, which is the pattern for 80% of the first marriages in that era.

Eugene isn't buried next to either of his wives. I can't find him in 1910.

So -

1) There was just one Eugene, who lied to the enumerator in 1900, out of vanity (I'm 45, but my hair is still curly and my eyes are still blue, so put me down for age 32"; it even rhymes.)

2) There was just one Eugene, who spoke with his mouth full in 1900.

3) There was just one Eugene, and the 1900 enumerator spilled something on his rough copy, which made his fair copy wrong.

4) There were two Eugenes; the relation to Phoebe in 1900 should have been "Nephew" or "first cousin once removed" or "Boarder".

5) None of the above

According to the 1900 Census, he is listed being born abt. 1863 and lived in Siskiyou County at the time.
The one I am searching was born in Norway abt. 1862,immigrated in 1870 first to Quebec then to Wisconsin. I cannot locate the right Gustav Thompson in Wisconsin, so I was thinking maybe he traveled or moved.
Just a long shot here. Thanks for any help.
Nancy Downs & husband Edward Overton came to Cottonwood ca 1852. Her sister Mary Ann Downs married John Bartol, a miner, in Cottonwood in 1862 and had 3 children. The Bartols left the area about 1869. I know nothing of the Overtons, other than their son was Major Watson Overton so any information about the Overton family would be appreciated also.

I found this while searching through the Internet.
****************************************

Final Rites held for Mrs. Nellie Smith

Funeral services were held Monday at Blake Funeral Chapel in Bishop for Mrs. Millard Smith, 61,
who passed away at her home last Sunday, May 11, Mother's Day. Rev. Alford B. Chalk performed
the ceremony. Interment was in Odd Fellow cemetery in the Shelly Lot.

She was born April 26, 1886 in Bishop, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Shelly and was
christened Nellie Josephine Shelly. She attended Bishop schools, and except for a period from
1933 to 1943 when she resided in Siskiyou county, she has been a lifetime Inyo resident.

Samuel McFarland PATRICK died in Yreka on January 27, 1873. I found some where that he was a saloon owner. The rest of his family were in Howard and Livingston Counties in Missouri. I'd just like to know why he stayed in California, leaving his wife and children behind. One history states that he and his sons Robert Levi and Charles went to the west, to trade with the Indians and Mexicans. He is listed on the 1850 census in Missouri.

I'm a little uncertain, but bear with me.
I have Joseph Applegate born abt 1837 in Pennsylvania. I can find an obituary or death notice in St. Louis, where a sister and her family lived and died, and one match in the 1880 census, in Scott Valley. I am uncertain if they are all the same man, and wonder if there were death records as early as 1895 in Siskyou Co.
if the Scott Valley Joseph is my Joseph, then he is the second relative I've stumbled over since moving just over the boarder...never knowing that any family was up this way!

My g-g-grandfather William Luddy and his brothers Michael
and Thomas were early settlers of Sawyers Bar together with
their families. The Salmon River country was then in Old
Klamath County. But when Klamath County was dissolved in 1874
Sawyers found itself in Siskiyou County. Iam very much interested in learning anything about the Luddys and Bigelows
of Sawyers and quite willing to exchange information.

Regards, Bob.

PETRIFIED HEAD FOUND AT SISSON

DUNSMUIR NEWS
March 22, 1893

PETRIFIED HEAD FOUND AT SISSON

A few days ago ex-Supervisor Cochran found in a ditch in front of his Sisson home, about 5 feet below the surface, what he at first thought to be a large water-soaked pine knot. A few days afterwards he picked it up and was on the verge of placing it in a stove when its resemblance to a human head attracted his attention. Scraping and washing off the dirt, he was greatly surprised to find a perfectly formed human head, eyes, nose and mouth.
The find was placed on exhibition at Doc's Mint Saloon in Sisson, where hundreds have viewed it, and speculated upon its history. The head is somewhat larger than average man's; the mouth is well defined, but slightly askew. The nose is perfect and the eyes natural but set close to the nose. The eyebrows are perfectly plain. An ear had been torn off, but the other ear is well preserved. Skin on the face is unbroken and of a dark color. The top of the skull is gone, exposing the divisions of the brain, which still retain natural color, even to the veins, which are easily traced. As may be supposed, the head is quite heavy, but petrification is not so thorough but that a knife will still cut any portion of it.
Mr. E.L. Baker, an experienced archaeologists, says the find is most valuable to science, but confesses that he cannot form any idea as to age or race the relic belongs, but that water and soil ingredients could have preserved it perhaps thousands of years ago, and possibly may have been buried by some ancient volcanic actiivity in the region.

SISSON MASCOT
January 31, 1895

BOATING ACCIDENT CLAIMS LIFE OF AMMER PERSONS

Mr. Ammer Persons, well known and highly respected business man of Sisson, lost his life in a boat accident Saturday. He and a brother, Evastus, took the train to Delta, where he was to commence work on a mine across the Sacramento River. Over at the mine the men worked until noon, then attempted to return across the swift current, but lost control of the boat, the brother jumped out as did Ammer, into about 4 feet of swift water. Evastus caught onto some willows, but Ammer tried to swim to the nearby shore, but failed. An indian on the bank tried to make rescue, but also failed. The body was found Monday near the scene of the accident by L. Sheldon, C. Wickham and A. Clark, who went down as soon as news reached Sisson. The funeral was held in Sisson under auspices of the Knights Templar of Yreka, and the Masons of Sisson, with Sisson Fire Department Personnel in full uniform in attendance. Mr. Persons was born August 28, 1860, at Venic, Erie County, Ohio, and came to California in 1882. He came to Sisson with a telegraph company during building of the railroad. He and Miss Carrie A. Sisson, daughter of Mrs. J.H. Sisson, were wed in August of 1887. He leaves his family of Sisson and many other relatives and friends.
I am interested in researching the Ahlgren line back to Uusikaupuunki, Finland. This name may have changed prior to arriving in California around 1870-1875. Abraham, Charles and Frank Ahlgren settled in Siskiyou County
and possibly the Bay area after 1890. Anyone with information would be appreciated. Thanks, Ralph Ahlgren

DUNSMUIR NEWS
January 30, 1897

There was quite a sensational trial in Dunsmuir Tuesday. Willie Johnson, alias Bill Frazer, F. Smith, etc., was on trial for keeping a disorderly house and disturbing the neighborhood's peace and decency. About a month ago an undesireable woman from some of the vice-rampant towns of Southern California came North and met Willie, and together they disrupted the neighborhood. The woman crazed by drugs and liquor, tried to enter the Crocker house one night in a semi-nude and noisy condition. Hence, a complaint was sworn out by M.V. Crocker, who lives on East side of the Sacramento. Crocker, Hoyt and Wenly testified in the case. Willie and the woman gave evidence in their behalf. After a short time the jury entered a guilty verdict, and the judge pronounced sentences of 40 days each in the County Jail at Yreka.
Foster, who some years ago was a California resident and well known in Siskiyou County, is at present stopping in the East, where he has given many exhibitions of his skills in rough and fancy riding, also shooting with Winchester rifle and Colt revolvers. He will shortly start for the Indian Territory in Company with some of his old time cowboy friends, to be present at the opening up of the Cherokee Strip. Several Eastern people desire his services as guide. He will probably make his headquarters at Caldwell or Kiowa, Kansas, until the grand land rush is made, the time of which has not been agreed upon, but probably will take place in September.

JAMES A. MAXWELL

YREKA JOURNAL
December 26, 1894

GRADUALLY THE PIONEERS ARE LEAVING US

Gradually, the pioneers of early day California are leaving us. December 16, 1894, at his home in Igerna, James A. Maxwell peacefully closed his eyes in eternal slumber, while his soul left the aged body and soared away to join the fast increasing sprit band of 49ers, now sojourning beyond the Dark River.
Crossing the plains with ox teams from Illinois in 1849, Mr. Maxwell stayed in California five years, when he again returned home and engaged in the lumber business, furnishing railroad ties to the Illinois Central Railroad. Escaping with but $1,500 out of a fortune of $20,000 during the "wildcat" money panic of 1858, Mr. Maxwell again turned his gaze Westward toward the land of the setting sun, this time accompanied by his family.
The first trip was made with his two elder sons, W.S. and H.B. Maxwell.
Arriving in SanFrancisco on the 14th day of June, 1858, on the second trip to the West Coast area, the Maxwells then started North in the Fall and journeyed over the Old Sullaway Trail on muleback from Old Shasta, in Shasta County, and up the canyon, with all hands arriving in Siskiyou County safe and sound after a lonely trip of many privations and hardships.
Mr. Maxwell located at the head of Shasta Valley with his family and at once embarked in the sawmill business. The deceased also spent considerable money in mining enterprises in the Barkhouse District.
From 1879 to 1884 he conducted a lumberyard in Yreka. At the ripe old age of 82 years, 4 months and 16 days, the grand old pioneer was prepared to quit this busy life with the satisfaction of having faithfully discharged the duties imposed upon him by his God; and as a token of respect to the deceased, we (the Journal) say - "Peace to his ashes."
DUNSMUIR NEWS
October 30, 1897

TWO MEN FACE ARSON CHARGE

To be the first persons indicted and tried under a penal act of Congress, to be acquitted on that inndictment and to be immediately re-arrested on the same charge, are claims to distinction which Butcher and Galpin may have.
They are accused of causing a forest fire burning about 4,000 acres of Government timber land, nearly destroying the Crocker summer home and the Castle Crags Tavern Resort last summer. The men are woodsmen and deerhunters in Shasta County, and are alleged to have set the fire to burn out underbrush to aid them in hunting deer. The frequency and destructiveness of fire on Government forest areas led Congress at its last session to pass an act intended to prevent such fires in the future, which act went into effect last January, setting forth fines up to $5,000 or imprisonment up to 2 years or both.
The Shasta men went to trial Monday, but due to an error in the land description, were released, but immediately upon filing a connected case, were re-arrested and will have their trial in the near future, perhaps within 7 days.
CHAMPION'S 40-ACRE TRACT

Wednesday last, by invitation, Frank Bray and the Dunsmuir News man accompanied Mr. J. Champion for a stroll through the latter gentleman's 40-acre tract of level land he has on the Sacramento River's East side, just below Dunsmuir. We were surprised at richness of the soil and beautiful surroundings; it being an ideal place for summer camping, as the tract is watered by two streams, is well shaded and commands fine views of Castle Peak and Mt. Shasta. Mr. Champion is now having cleared a portion of the land, which he will cultivate, and in spring will erect thereon a summer residence.
Besides the natural beauty surrounding the place, the soil is well adapted to fruit trees, timothy and alfalfa hay, etc.
When the place is improved and buildings completed, Mr. Champion contemplates he will posess some of the finest and most valuable pieces of property in Sacramento Canyon.
DUNSMUIR NEWS
September 18, 1897

PAIR INDICTED FOR SETTING FIRE

The United States Grand Jury has found indictments against Lee Butcher and G. Galpin for setting fire to public domain near Castle Crags. Several weeks ago the pair faced Justice Wicks at Castella, but due to a jury disagreement the case was dropped. Thursday, U.S. Deputy Marshal H.M. Moffett came up from San Francisco in search of the two. He found Butcher that evening near Castle Crags, placing him under arrest. He was found roaming in the woods with the Turpin woman. Butcher was armed to the teeth, but Moffett was accompanied by W.S. Conway, and they soon had the fellow in custody and lodged him in jail for safe-keeping. Friday they went to 18th Crossing and found Galpin up a hill cutting wood, and promptly put him under arrest, and also brought him to Dunsmuir. The pair will be taken to San Francisco to be tried in U.S. District Court in that city.

FIRE BURNS SEVERAL HOUSES - S.P. NEHER

DUNSMUIR NEWS
June 29, 1895

FIRE BURNS SEVERAL HOMES - S.P. NEHER

About 6 p.m., Thursday, smoke was noted hanging over the roof of S.P. Neher's residence. The alarm quickly caused everybody to rush to the scene, but there was no hose, hydrants or water to speak of. P.F. Furlong and Harry Clark got to the roof but couldn't get water up there. The first hose coupled to the hydrant burst. Willing hands carried out furniture to safety. Soon houses on both sides started to burn, and when water of any force was finally obtained, it was played on them. However, the house on the North, also owned by Neher, was doomed. So furniture was carried out. Charley Gill's house on South side, was saved by streams of water played by men on the roof. The last Neher house burned was occupied by George Allen, Railroad Blacksmith, and family. Mr. Murtis, Neher's father-in-law, who had belongings and clothes in the upper story, lost all. Mr. S.P. Neher carried no insurance.
W. Herzinger and H.H. Kingery worked so hard fighting fire they were nearly overcome with exhaustion. Dunsmuir needs to organize a good fire Department.
S.P. Neher will construct three new houses, two replacing those burned; and one on a lot across the street.

DUNSMUIR NEWS
July 29, 1895

RICH GOLD BELT DISCOVERED

Old man Anderson, a rancher near Kosk Creek in Shasta County, has been telling people for years that he knew where the Lost Cabin Mine was located. However, no one placed confidence in his story until he had an interview with Mr. William Murray, who concluded it was worth looking into, which he did.
The result is that he found a gold bearing belt 800 feet wide and 7,500 feet long, with samples assayed at the U.S. Mint, and by Murray's brother at Redding Assay Works, as averaging $50 in gold and $6 in silver per ton. The ore is black quartz also showing iron and copper.
The find is by a stream and could be mined and milled easily. The company owns 800 miners inches of water at 500 foot tall. The mine site is 60 miles Northeast of Redding, near where Kosk Creek joins Pit River. Present owners of the property are: Clay Taylor, Sylvester Hull, W. Murray, James Murray, L. Hotaling, and L. Eilers of Redding; and Messrs. Smith, Brackett and Anderson of Kosk Creek.

MT. SHASTA HERALD
January 13, 1892

Igerna, a small town, established about 4 years since (sometime in 1888,) on the C.&O. Railroad line, about 8 miles North of Sisson, is now beginning to show some indications of an increased population. The climatic influences are beneficial to the adult, and water is said to be first class. The surroundings contain all requisits to sustain a much larger population, as there is plenty of work there. However, no increase has occurred until the present when on January 1, 1892, a son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Allen J. Bagley, the first child born in that town.

ABNER WEED REPLIES TO RUMORS

DUNSMUIR NEWS
October 20, 1900

ABNER WEED REPLIES TO RUMORS

Abner Weed, Republican candidate for Supervisor from District Two, most emphatically denied rumors that he favors imposing a road tax upon laboring men. He never was nor is he now in favor of such a proposition. This rumor is likely one of the Democratic roarbacks usually sprung on Republican candidates just on election eve. Our Democratic friends are getting hard up for something to say against Mr. Weed, when resorting to such tactics. The Republicans could not have chosen a better man, than Abner Weed for the important office of County Supervisor. He is in every way fitted for the position to which he aspires. He is a modest, unassuming gentleman, attending strictly to his own business, and if elected will look out for interests of taxpayers to their entire satisfaction.
One especially good point in favor of Mr. Weed is the manner in which he treats mill employees. He pays highest wages, and boards his men well, and if his sawmill stops for a day or two in stormy weather, or a man is laid up for a few days by injury or sickness, there is no charge for board; and when payday comes, they get coin or check, and are free to go where they please to trade. Mr. Weed is a large employer of workers. Why shouldn't taxpayers support a man like Mr. Weed, who pays heavy taxes and consumes large amounts of products produced by local farmers?
DUNSMUIR NEWS
May 16, 1891

The quiet of Dunsmuir was disturbed Thursday night. Pat Furlong was stabbed in the abdomen, and C. Hensen who lives with a woman in an immoral house, has been arrested. It seems Furlong rented a house to some women and Hensen came to live in the house. The trouble was over rent. Tuesday the two had a fight and Hensen's face got battered badly. Meeting on the street Thursday night, the fight was resumed and the stabbing took place, with J.H. Kneeland arresting Hensen. Doctors Gill and Flett, expect Furlong to recover. Hensen was bound over to Superior Court by Judge J. Jones and taken to Yreka.
DUNSMUIR POSTMASTER SHEAFOR PASSES AWAY

DUNSMUIR NEWS
May 12, 1900

DUNSMUIR POSTMASTER SHEAFOR PASSES AWAY

Postmaster J.J. Sheafor passed away at his Dunsmuir home Monday evening of this week, after only a few days illness.
Jacob Jasper Sheafor was born in Boaz, Wisconsin May 11, 1854, and died May 7, 1900, aged 46 years. In 1870 he came to Roseville, California, farming 15 years. In 1887 he and Miss Gussie Mertes were married. She survives him, as do his aged parents in Boaz, Wisconsin. Deceased was a nephew of S.P. Neher of Dunsmuir and I. Neher of Dell Rapids, South Dakota.
Sheafor came to Siskiyou County in 1885, engaging in lumbering and sawmilling before the railroad came through Siskiyou County, at a site near what became Mott in 1887, the firm being J.J. Scott & Company, comprised of J.J. Scott, M.J. Neher, W.W. Shattuck and J.J. Sheafor.
In 1893 the Sheafors moved to Dunsmuir, residing here since. He was appointed Dunsmuir Postmaster by President McKinley, which position he served exceedingly well up to the time of his death.
Remains were taken to Roseville where services were held, and interment took place in the family plot Wednesday, under auspices of Roseville I.O.O.F. Lodge. He was also a member of Crystal Tent Knights of Maccabees of Dunsmuir. The sympathy of the community goes to the widow, a well known teacher the past 5 years in Dunsmuir elementary school, and the other relatives of deceased.
On May 12, bondsmen for the late J.J. Sheafor, appointed Miss Frankie Kilborn as temporary Postmistress on recommendation of U.S. Postal Inspector L.H. Bricker, in Dunsmuir this week in his official capacity. Appointment of Miss Kilborn is a most excellent one, the young lady for some time has been a Deputy under Sheafor, and is familiar with all details of the office. She is assisted by Mrs. H.B. Basham.
However, most dove out under the tent flaps except one, trying to scoop up money on a table. The prisoner, taken before Justice Clark was sentenced to $200 fine or jail. He chose jail. The officers were quite brave as most of the players were armed either with knife or revolver.
DUNSMUIR NEWS
August 12, 1899

GUNSHOTS CLAIM LIVES OF TWO

While Mrs. W.G. Brown and her son-in-law, were going to the depot, where she was to take the train for Sisson, they were met by the husband from whom the woman had been seperated about 16 months, because of his dissolute habits and jealousy. He drew a revolver exclaiming, "I've got you now!" He fired three shots with the first striking the woman's wrist, as she carried her hand at the waist, passing through the wrist. The ball struck her belt buckle, following the belt around the body. As she turned to run, shots 2 and 3 struck her back, and she fell into a ditch. After directing the 4th shot at the son-in-law but missing, the man turned the weapon to his own head and fired. He fell dead partially on the dead woman. Mrs. Brown had for some time been living with her married daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Scruggs, at the Wheeler Sawmill. Coroner Green of Shasta County came Sunday holding an inquest. The man was buried in Shasta county. Remains of the woman were buried in Dunsmuir's Cemetery with Christian services.
