I am in Ireland and I am researching Thomas Kelly who emigrated to California by way Panama in 1853/4 he was aged 19. I located him in the 1860 census working as a miner in Goodyears Bar in Sierra County. He was granted citizenship by the District Court of the United States of America held in District of California in 1868. It is also believed he had a Land grant in California and it is said he also worked building a railway. He returned to Ireland in 1869.
I have been searching citizen records and land records and can't locate him. Can anyone help me with the right source for this information.

Regards Seamus

Page 19 in the book "DOWNIEVILLE Gold Town on the Yuba" (volume 1 of the James J. Sinnott's History of Sierra County series of books) states that "T.M. Ramsdell" was elected county treasurer in the June 1852 election. He and the others elected were the first Sierra County office holders. His political party was Democrat. It is an out-of-print book. But you can find it in some libraries and for sale as used.

I am slowly creating a complete surname index for that book and posting it a few pages at a time at the below URL. I am willing to do look-ups in the book. So you may want to check that page from time to time. I probably won't finish it until the end of this year.
http://cagenweb.com/sierra/Ref_books/SinnottV1.html

Hope that is helpful,
Rick Hanson
CAGenWeb County Coordinator for Sierra County (http://cagenweb.com/sierra/)
RichardLHanson@gmail.com (checked daily)
or sierra@cagenweb.com (checked weekly)
I am looking for a Thomas Manley (or Manly) Ramsdell who was born in Vermont in 1801.

From a memoir by his son, Thomas Manly Ramsdell, Jr. (b. 1821 Vermont), while living in Circleville, OH: "There came across my father who had been a Colonel in the patriotic army of Canada in 1838 and 1839, but who had escaped into middle of Ohio after a reward of 200 pounds had been made for him by the Canadian government." That is the last reference made to Thomas Manley Ramsdell, Sr. in the memoir.

I found a T.M Ramsdell in Downieville California on the 1860 Census born in Vermont about 1801 and listed as a “Public Administrator”. There is no on listed with him.

I found that T.M. Ramsdell was elected County Treasurer in 1852 and remained Treasurer in 1853 (http://files.usgwarchives.net/ca/sierra/history/1882/illustr...).

I also have found him in the Downieville cemetery with a death date of 09-20-1863 at 65 years (http://files.usgwarchives.net/ca/sierra/cemeteries/sier-m-r....).

Does anyone in the area know anything about T.M. Ramsdell? It would even help if his full name was recorded somewhere in the County records.

The following information comes from the book "DOWNIEVILLE Gold Town on the Yuba" by James J Sinnott (page 78).

A letter to the editor (Sierra Democrat newspaper, 11 Sep 1861, Summit Valley) describes a trip to through Sierra County (Marysville to Virginia City). It includes "Six miles over a high mountain (or on the side) over a delightful grade, brings us to another stopping place kept by Mr. Harris, formerly of Forest City. This is known as Middle Waters Station."

There are a couple of notes concerning Mr Harris:
-- Harris Meadows is named after this man.
-- The Harris inn is commonly known as "Our House", but some say that is incorrect. It was really known as "Hour House".

Rick Hanson
Sierra County CaGenWeb

I am looking for any available information on a Calif. Civil War veteran John Dineen who was supposedly born in Sydney, Australia. His residence was not provided at his time of enlistment, but he enlisted as a Corporal at Howland Flat, California on December 11, 1864 and on December 20, 1864 was mustered into "I" Company, California 8th Infantry. He mustered out at Fort Point, San Francisco, California on October 24, 1865. I am looking for anything, especially his birth, death and where he is buried. Any assistance will be appreciated.

James Gray
www.acwv.info
Freeman was born in Tennessee and attempting to determine if he was from Franklin County, Tennessee. Land records showed real property purchased by Freeman in the 1870's and the 1880 census showed him living with his brother Ed Freeman. The James A.

Patricia

I too am doing some research on this particular WINANS family. It seems that Anthony WINANS <?b. 1835 in OH> was married to my Great Grand Aunt Adaline A. KIDDER b. 1832 of Jerusalem, Yates Co., NY. There were a few WINANS (WINANTS) in Yates Co., that moved to Ohio and then to Iowa. By 1852 Anthony was living in Jackson Co., IA and Anthony and Adaline were married on 12 Dec 1855 in Bellevue, Jackson Co., IA. They had two children (1) Charles A (probably Anthony), b. 1856 in IA and Mary E b. 1858 in IA. Apparently Anthony died between 1857 and 1860 in Jackson Co., IA because by 1860 Adaline and the children were living in Hazel Green, Grant Co., WI with James WINANS b. 1802 in NJ. By 1870 Adaline and Mary E. moved back to Bellevue, IA but her son Charles moved with James to Lincoln, Sierra Co., CA. There is also another J. and a C WINANS (I assume Jacob and Catherine) living with them. By 1880, Charles A. had moved to Lassen, Tehama Co., CA. I don't know exactly the relationship between Anthony and James and Jacob but I must assume there was one. I would venture that Anthony (Adaline's husband) is the son of Anthony and Margaret McKinley and Anthony (Margaret's husband) is the son of James - Jacob would be a brother. At this point I don't know what happened to Charles A but will continue my research.

Marilynn Story
msstory@hotmail.com

I was delighted to get your reply on ancestry.com! I'm not sure if I told you how I'm related to the Harris-Howes. Lena, whose full name is Eva Lena, is my great grandmother. I was also very close to Eva Lena's daughter, my great aunt Viola. Viola and her husband Clifford lived in Watsonville, Ca.
I remember visiting Aunt Iola when I was growing up; we lived in Sacramento and I think she did too. She was quite elderly at the time.
I'll tell you what I know about Catherine Howe after their divorce in 1883:
The 1880 census shows them together with the 9 children in Sierra County, CA.
The 1900 census in Santa Clara County, CA shows Catherine Harris, mother of 9 children; 8 living. Lola (Iola) married daughter, 22, School teacher and Abe Harris, son, 20, both born in California.

From the 1850 census in Sauk County, Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, there is a Bartholamien Howe, born in Ireland, age 34 and his wife Catherine, age 35, born in Ohio. Their children are listed as:
Mary, age 8, born in Wisconsin,
Catherine, age 5, born in Wisconsin,
Elizabeth, age 3, born in Wisconsin. (our Catherine?)

You may have already contacted Carolyn (osborne) via the message boards. She wrote this to me:
"My parents bought a house in Our House in 1974. It was built I believe in the 1960's. Our House is from what information I can get was the Harris family ranch and a stage coach stop, blacksmith shop and possibly an inn or boarding house. There are 2 stories on how it got its name. The first one I have heard and what I believe to be true is that when travelers including the stages would stop the Harris' children would run out and say "come stay at our house!" This came from an old timer named Reader that lived in the area all his life. I believe he would have been close to 100 years old now. We are friends with his descendants who still live in the North San Juan area.
The other is that it was said that it took an hour to ride the stage from Freeman's Crossing, (which is the area of the bridge on hwy 49 that crosses the Middle Fork of the Yuba river and Oregon Creek, thus Hour House. There is an old wooden covered bridge there. Any way I like the first story better!
Pike City is what the area is called today. Pike City is approx 2 miles from Our House. We moved there in 1974 and I lived there until I graduated from high school in 1980. My parents still live there and we have always wanted to know more about this place. The property is a meadow approx 20 ac and is at the top of a hill right on the road. There is a large pond in the meadow. There also is a small dam down the hill from there on the Middle Fork of the Yuba River named Our House Dam. I am trying to get pictures of Our House so that I can make up a book for my parents. I am intrigued by the history in that area and would like to know more. A web site that tells the stories of the naming of Our House is camptonville.com It is a small town approx 8 miles from Pike."
She says she now lives in New York but still considers Our House as her home.
So I guess I really don't know much about Catherine after the divorce but I thought you might be interested in the history of Our House.
Please let me know if you get any more information. You can use my e-mail address if you'd rather:
applehill1@internet49.com
Nancy

Abraham Perry Harris (born 1831 in Kinzua, Pennsylvania)and Catherine Eliza Howe (apparently born 1846, somewhere in Wisconsin) are my great-great-grandparents. My mother (Linda Morgan) was the original poster on this thread. Our family records have come from John Holmes Harris (who later married Victoria Moynier), one of their sons. We know that Abe and Catherine Eliza were divorced in Nov. 1883; we have copies of the court orders, which list these children at that time (and their names/ages match with those in the family Bible):
Como Leon Lincoln (21 years)
Lena (19 years)
Inez (17 years)
Lilly (15 years---usually written as Lillie in other documents
Eliza (14 years)
Rosa (10 years)---usually called Rose in other documents
John Holmes (8 years)
Iola (6 years)
and Abraham Perry Jr. (3 years)

The family papers we have came to us through Victoria Harris (nee Moynier), wife of John Holmes; he died in 1923. Her family is the Moyniers (originally Moynier Du Bourg when they came from France) and Fourniers, both long time farmers in French Corral. Another branch of the family is the Brownings, of Nevada City.

My great-uncle Ralphard Harris (son of John Holmes and Victoria) wrote to the Forestry Service back in the 1970s, in trying to stop clear-cutting of the areas around the old family territories ( Banner Mines, Harris Meadows), that Abraham Perry was an Indian scout for wagon trains coming over the Sierras, and Catherine Eliza was a young (14 years) girl in one of the trains he led. They married in 1860 and founded Middle Water House and Our House as wagon/stage/mail stops, with lodging and supplies.

My mother and I would like to find out more about what happened to Catherine Eliza Howe Harris after her 1883 divorce. The only information I have is a 1901 letter from her to her son John Holmes, wishing him well in his new marriage. She was living in San Jose.

Abraham Perry died sometime between 1903 and 1906; John Holmes seems to have become the manager of Our House at that time, but the siblings (especially Abraham Perry Jr.) then tried to sell it, and we don't have papers for it after that time. John Holmes continued to work the mining claims.

I am looking for information regarding Our House in Sierra County, Ca. My family owns the property it was on and we are interested in the history of the area. I am especially interested in seeing pictures of the buildings and the family that lived there. I am interested in putting together a history of it for my parents who still live on the property. If you could help me I'd greatly appreciate it. I have not had any luck searching myself as there is not much on the web. Thank you for any assistance you could give.

My great aunt was Victoria Moynier Harris who married John Holmes Harris the son of Abraham Perry Harris. I got the information from copies of pages from her family bible. I noticed that for some reason she is just listed in the bible as Victoria Harris, perhaps that is where you got her name. Victoria Harris (nee Moynier) was born September 10, 1882 at French Corral, Nevada County, CA.

Hi,

I have a couple more names to throw in your mix:
Delia M. Sharkey, born Ireland (I'll find the date for you)
married George Franklin Myers on 4/10/1871.
They are both interred at Sharkey Cemetary, Plumas County. They had 8 children. Their son, George John Myers, married Josephine Boyle. They are my great-grandparents.

Lisa

Hi, SherrieBarber!

Lemee see if I can do this in chronological order:

Josephine Boyle was my greatgrandmother. She married
George Myers (I've also seen it spelled Meyers)and begat my grandmother, Cecelia Agnes Myers, my great uncle George Benjamin and my great aunt Adele. Josephine died when my grandmother was about 10 (1918?). I have no idea where she was interred. George Myers remarried, a school teacher named Florence, and they had a son. I don't remember his name. I believe Great-grandfather lived the remainder of his life in Fernley, NV. I lived in his house when I was a child. Great-grandfather died around 1960 and is buried in Fallon, NV. Florence preceded him and is also buried in Fallon.

My grandmother married a Danishman in 1928 named Jen Hans Jensen; they had 6 children: Johanna (died at age 10), James (passed at 77 last December), Peter (stillborn), Mary Jo, Bertha (my mother, who died in 1989), and George (who died in 2003). Cecelia Agnes Jensen died in 1978, and is also buried in Fallon.

George Myers II was married to a lady named Trudy. They had a son, Frank, and lived in Lovelock NV for as long as I could remember. George owned and operated the gas company in Lovelock. Trudy passed; George remarried a lady name Emily, I think, in the early '70's. I'm fairly certain they are both gone by now. But I believe Frank is still around.

Cecelia Boyle married Frank Myers. The only child of this marriage that I know for sure was a daughter I knew as Aunt Jo. She and my grandmother could have passed for sisters, they looked so much alike. She married a man named Ed Paulsen and they had two sons, Sonny and Michael. Both Aunt Jo and Uncle Ed have passed. I don't know when.

Family rumors have the Myers Brothers as jacks-of-all-trades: miners, loggers, and muleskinners. They owned or worked property all over the Sierras. My grandmother was born in Loyalton. My uncle Jim once took me on a road trip to Graegle, where we apparently also had some family dealings.

In doing a search of Sierra Nevada history, I came upon a couple of names in the Shasta County registry. Whether they are related, I couldn't say, but it seems possible. There is a recorded marriage between a George Boyle and a Carrie L. Meyers. George Boyle Meyers died in 1907 and is also buried in Sierraville.

I know Kate Boyle had a pretty substantial spread in Sattley. I'd like to know a little more about her.

There is a James Boyle (1876) interred in the same Sierraville cemetery.

There is also a Turner connection: While I was growing up, my grandmother's cousin, Jim Turner, was a frequent visitor. I don't remember much in detail about him. He'd had a growth (cancer) removed from his bottom lip and had a distinctive look about him as a result. There are a couple of references in the Sierra County historical registry to an older James Turner who I believe was a miner.

Well, that's all I got. How about you? (p.s. if we're related or if you can fill in some holes, this is terribly exciting for me!)

My name is Lisa. I have 3 children of my own and 3 grandchildren. I'd love to add some branches to their tree.

Looking for information on the pioneer family of Boyle that settled in the late 1800's in Sierra Valley. John, born Canada, died 1881. Catherine, born Ireland, died 1908. Both are interred in Sierraville Cemetery. There were a number of children including Cecelia (born CA) and Josephine (born Ill). The girls married brothers named Myers and both girls homesteaded in NV around 1900. Anyone with info??

Hi Lisa, Those names do not appear on any of my Sharkey Family data. I do have my Sharkey Family on Ancestor.com, Family Member Trees if you would like to look at it. After clicking on Member Trees, put in Myles Sharkey, born, 1838 in Ireland, died 1921 in California and it should bring up my tree. I am sure the people you mentioned must be some relation to my family, their were nieces and nephews of my grandfather but I do not have any info on them. Pat
