Need dates of deed transfers for this property as an aid in determining when in 1929 Catherine Austin died. Have certificate of no death certificate record from Sacramento and have queried the surrounding counties. Any advice welcome; want her obituary or death notice from local papers in the long run, but need month at least.

Hi Grace,

I went to the Shasta Historical Society to see what I could find out about these people. As you probably know from the Shasta County page, Mary Curtis and Catherine Austin are buried in a cemetery in Fall River Mills. That is about 50 miles east of Montgomery Creek. In looking for a reference to the hotel, I found a reference to Montgomery's Hotel in Fall River Mills. Could the hotel they operated be that one? There was a Montgomery Creek Hotel, but it makes more sense to me that your people had the one in Fall River Mills, since they're all buried there and in McArthur, near FRM (along with a whole bunch of other Bartles, Curtis, and Robert Startt).

So, first question - do you think it is more likely Montgomery's Hotel in Fall River Mills?

In looking for your names, I came across a nice article in the Covered Wagon (historical society's annual publication) about Benjamin Wisner Curtis (1847 - 1892), born in Ohio. Any relation to your Curtises? Let me know and I can get copies.

I also found a rererence to a Benjamin Startt I being the first white child born at Fort Crook where his father was a doctor. It was in reference to the founding of the Fort Crook Historical Society.

Regarding finding Catherine's and Mary's death dates, it might be fruitful to see if there are probate records for them. I have some probate research of my own to do, so I could do that, but I can't guarantee any time frame. Let me know if you're interested.

Regards,
Bonnie in Shasta

Tracing Mary Curtis, who was Mary A Start in Baltimore Md.
married to Benjamin Start Jr. by 1860 . then to Andrew Curtis by 1876. All the Start children in 1880 Shasta California Census show being born in Maryland.
Does anyone have information on that family.. Listing of Montgomery Creek Hotel information does not give the State?
(California)?.
Did the Benjamin Start/Startt showing 1880 Census become the Doctor that referenced in June 7th filing. Is Mary Curtis noted as buried Fall River Mills (state?) wife of Andrew
Information on Catherine Start Bartie Austin and Robert Startt? Information on Father Start. (b 1841/5-) maybe in bio of Dr. Start?
My family married across the Start family with Henderson/Cole families!

My Great Grand father Robert Austin born 16 Dec 1853, Elgin Co., Ontario. Canada, Died before 1920 probably in Shasta county California. Married a Catherine Jane Stark Bartle, 19 Dec 1899, Fall River Township, Shasta county, California, USA.

According to family legend, Robert Austin, and his son from a previous marriage, William Henry Austin, built a hotel in Fall River Mills. I have a photo of Willam taken in Fall River Mills. William returned to Michigan in 1907 and married my Grandmother Gladys Ribble. I believe, but can not prove that William was first married to Mae C. Falke, on Jan 1 1903, in Shast County.

Could these be the same ancestors you are researching?

Hi! Catherine Startt (not Stark) is my great-great aunt. She was born in Falls River around 1867. She had at least 3 full siblings, Robert, California (my great-grandmother) and Benjamin. She's on the 1870 census for Shasta County. Her mother, Mary Echols, CONERY, Startt, CURTIS had several other children with two other husbands. I had an old obit for Catherine Bartle but it was accidently thrown out.

I hope this helps.

Joyce, all the Startt and Curtiss children were born in Shasta, at either Horse Town or Fall River Mill. My great-grandmother is California Wise. The marriage records for Echols/Startt and Startt/Curtiss are in California. Benjamin was not a doctor, now was Andrew anything exciting. The Censuses are great!
