They are my boyfriend's relatives. Would copy some. We also have a sketch of their stockton house and also a family portrait.

I was not aware of the Great Register of San Joaquin Co.
Knowing the son,Edwin's middle initial "C", I found him in the Ca. Voter Registrations in both 1900 and 1902 in Valley Springs Precinct in Calaveras Co. The age in 1900 was listed as 32 and 24 in 1902, but I feel that the age, 24, was a typo error (should be 34). A little info can open up many more doors. Thanks for all of the useful info.

Edwin Phillips Family (1880-1900)

I have found the Edwin Phillips family living at 445 South Pilgrim Street in Stockton, California in both the 1880 and 1900 census. However, all of the family members disappear after that date. I assume that Edwin (age 64) died sometime after 1900, but don't know what happened to his wife, Emmaline, and a son, Edwin. Also he had a daughter, Nellie, who married Oscar Brown Groves sometime after 1890, but she died after 6 years of marriage. Any additional info would be greatly appreciated.

I have read this thread & was facinated with the Stubblefield information [cannot connect to my Stubblefield family that migreated in the early 1850's to CA from Gibson CO TN]
And the destination of Stockton CA where some of my Stubblefield family did settle. Robert Coleman Stubblefield was the HOH there. 1860's-70's.....

But then I came to the posting about the Carrico connection [indirectly] because I need to dig out my Quick Family information to share the names of the Carrico family connection to them.

I know this did not help anyone but myself to remember to return to this thread.....sorry
I was just working on Lester Barber again. Now it looks like my Guy is in Des Moines, Polk Co, IA with his father in the 1930 census. So Joe & Ralph is not his. My guy had a wife & child when he registered for the draft in Chicago 1917ish but they are not with him in 1930 in Iowa, as he is shown as "Single"
My Guy still died in San Joaquin & Alice is still his half sister. just the 1920 & 30 census don't add up now.

That is very kind of you. I have his dates already, (1825-1901) and quite a lot of his ancestors on his mother's side. I have a family tree drawing going back to her immigrant ancestor.

Some years ago, his grandsons (?) gave an interview to a local (Stockton?) paper and spoke of his papers and a box of old letters. I was hoping to contact the descendant who might still have those and would be willing to exchange copies and information.

His children by his second wife were:
Margaret Josephine Hitchcock (1871-1953) married Liesy
Virginia M. Hitchcock (no dates, no marriage)

I really would like to connect with their descendants, please.
Thank you.
Anna

James Wells, December 12, 1884. The cause was a difficulty of long standing and seems that in the eastern states Finch had seduced Wells' half-sister. Wells came to California and located at Ripon and Finch followed and obtained work in the warehouse; at one time he boarded and lodged with the Wells family. Just previous to the shooting it was reported to Wells that Finch had threatened his life. Wells at this time was teaching the Ripon schools on the main street, located where now stands the First National Bank. About 4 o'clock on the day of the murder, Finch was walking towards the schoolhouse and some of the men on the street remarked, "Now there'll be trouble." As Finch came near the schoolhouse Wells came out of the building and walked up to Finch. After a short talk, those watching the affair saw Wells draw a revolver and shoot at Finch four times. Two of the shots took effect and Finch was taken into John T. Bloomer's store. He was attended by Dr. B. M. Bainbridge but died shortly afterwards. As two of the witnesses of the murder John B. Matthews and Thomas Fredericks ran to the scene, Wells exclaimed, "I am sorry I had to shoot you, boy, you have been following me for years. You seduced my sister and this morning you insulted my family." Sheriff (Thomas) Cunningham hearing of the murder by telegraph hastened to the scene, arresting Wells and bringing him to Stockton jail. Wells was indicted by the Grand jury for murder, and his trial came up February 25, 1885, in the Masonic Hall as the old courthouse had been condemned as unsafe. He has sold his little house in Ripon to pay his attorneys, James A. Louititt and Wm. Dudley. The prosecuting was represented by the district attorney, Ansel Smith, assisted by Joseph C. Campbell. The jury went to their room on the evening of February 28, and the following morning reported that they could not agree, standing seven to five for acquittal. At a subsequent trial Wells was acquitted."

-----------------------

Red Bluff Daily News, 8 Feb 1921
Rev. James Wells Taught In Many Schools Of County
The funeral of Rev. James Wells who died at his home in Manton early Monday morning, will be held at Manton tomorrow at 1 o'clock.
Hi
I’m Larry Miller my cousins Clara and Don Tinnin are the oldest living residence in Lathrop Calif. and he has quite a collection of pitchers of Lathrop, if you are doing a book on Lathrop you must talk to them. Clara’s and my grandfather William H. Miller bought the Sanguinetti store in Lathrop. Don knows a lot about the history of Lathrop I think he has a photo of my grandfather and Mr. Sanguinetti in front of the store.

Larry
