My name is Michael Henry and I am with the Library of American Broadcasting, a research library at the University of Maryland devoted to the history of radio and television broadcasting. I am researching the career of Jerry Belcher (1895-1962), who worked in San Francisco radio from the late 1940's to the mid-1950's. I was wondering if anyone may know information about his radio career in SFO, may have heard him on the air, may have been interviewed by him on the air.

I appreciate any information anyone can share. I can be contacted at mlhenry@umd.edu

Thank you for your assistance.

-Michael Henry
Library of American Broadcasting
What shall I do with this?

What shall I do with this little gem: "Ann Welcome's Treasured Recipes" published in 1933 by the San Francisco Call-Bulletin? Inside the kitchen-worn cover it reads, "Souvenir Copy of Treasured Recipes presented by Ann Welcome, Director - Happy Homemaking Department, San Francisco Call-Bulletin and dedicated to her guests, The Women's Organizations represented at luncheon at the Eighth Annual Food Show and Home Appliance Exposition, Civic Auditorium, October 7-14, 1933". "Treasured Recipes" being from the 160 "Honorable Mention Winners" in connection with the 1933 Eighth Annual San Francisco Food Show". It gives the names and addresses of the 160 contributors along with their recipe. This is just the sort of thing that would be fun to include with your family history stories - I like the sound of the recipe for Mocha Scotch Cake (submitted by Miss Mabel Carroll, Route 1, Box 289, San Jose).

I would be willing to index the book with names, addresses and recipe titles but I prefer not to be in the business of look-ups. Perhaps there is a website where the host would be willing to post scans of this little 46-page treasure? I would be glad for suggestions.

Dr. William Henry Newell died 6/5/1913 in San Francisco. Where buried??

I am interested in locating the burial places of Civil War veterans buried in New Jersey cemeteries. Since I am not a relative of Dr. William Henry Newell who died 6/5/1913 in San Francisco at the age of 83, I cannot apply for a copy of his death certificate. He had ties to New Jersey and there is a possibility that he may have been shipped back east for burial.

On line records for San Francisco area cemeteries are scarce to say the least so that's no help. I live in New Jersey which also doesn't help.

I am only trying to locate the cemetery where he was interred and I really do not require copies of any documents. I do know that funeral services were held from Gray's Chapel, Geary and Devisadero streets. Unfortunately the services and interment were private.

Can anyone help me or offer some suggestions?

Bob

I have discovered that my Fernandez family went from Spain to Hawaii
1907 and from HI to San Francisco where my father was born shortly
thereafter 1914.
I believe they came by ship to San Francisco from Hawaii right around
1913.
Would anyone know if these are listed in the San Francisco Passenger
lists on Ancestry.com or anyone willing to do a lookup for me?
http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?dbid=7949&htx=List&am...
Also Ancestry states "passenger lists of ships arriving from foreign
ports" would that mean Hawaii would not be included as a port?? I guess I
am not too sure when Hawaii became one of the states.
Here is some info on the grandparents & their Spanish names in
(parenthesis) in case anyone can find them.
Joseph (Jose) Antonio Fernandez b. Spain 1865
Juana Fernandez (Sanchez) b. Spain April 18 1872
Their Fernandez children and the year they were born:
(Esperanza) Hope 1897, Spain
(Antonia) Antoinette 1887, Spain
(Ana) Annie 1899, Spain
(Jose) Joseph age 1901, Hawaii
(Josie/Josephina) Josefa age 1908, Hawaii
(Juana or Juanita) Jennie or Jane 1911, Hawaii
(Salvador) Samuel or Sam 1912
my father (Raffaelle) Ralph who was born after they arrived in San Francisco.
Thanks for any help or advice very much appreciated
Regards,
Sandy

HOCKING, William d. 22-Aug-1959 in San Francisco - obit request

Can anyone help me locate an obituary and/or a death certificate for William Thomas HOCKING? According to the California Death Records index, William died 22-Aug-1959 in San Francisco Co. The data shown in the index corresponds to what I would expect for William - born in Michigan, mother's maiden name of KREAL (actually KRELL, I believe).

This GG Uncle of mine has always eluded me, so I am hoping that the death cert and/or obit can confirm that this is the correct William HOCKING.

Regards,
Carl

Had a son who also lived in San Francisco, but I have not found his first name yet. If someone can locate a death for her or any other information on her or her son, I would really appreciate it. She was born in 1831 in New York. Her son was born after 1857. She also had a brother in San Francisco, surname Hinckley. Are any city directories for this time period online? Thanks.

I believe this funeral home does not exist under this name any longer. There address is 41 Van Ness Ave., near Market St. San Francisco, CA. Does anyone know who might hold there records. I am searching for information on Margaret "Peggy" Lovejoy that died in 1973 and used this funeral home.

ordering probate

i was wondering if anyone here has ordered probate records through the mail? i'm just wondering what the procedure must be. i found a website with the phone number but the only real information i found about ordering was to call the number and talk to the window person. problem is, every time i call i get their voicemail and as i'm clear on the other side of the county i'm not sure if they would be able to return my call. any info, suggestions, on ordering a will (from 1939) and any subsequent probate would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Hello, I have just found out that an ancestor of mine (James Creighton Ward) lived in San Francisco in 1930 and I know that he died around 1939. I need to order his probate records but before I can do that I need to know where he died. Is there a way to find out if he did indeed die in San Francisco, and if so, would it be possible to find the date as well?

Thanks Very Much in Advance!

William (Bill) Henry REED; Obituary 1935-2008

Capt. Bill Reed, U.S. Navy (ret.): December 26, 1935 - April 4, 2008

He wore a tuxedo with all the ease and elegance of Cary Grant. He was a man of grace and manners, a man's man who never met a lady he couldn't charm. He was a leader, a war hero, a quiet man who was never at a loss for words. Rich of voice and vocabulary, he was a storyteller, a reader and a thinker. He finished the crossword puzzle every day. He was at home everywhere: the tennis courts, the ski slopes, the cockpit of a Navy airplane, the deck of a Navy ship or at the helm of his own sailboat. He could whip up a superb spaghetti à la carbonara for friends on a moment's notice. His martinis were legendary and lethal. He played piano and blue-grass banjo and loved each and every dog and cat that graced his household over the years. He was a husband, a father, a grandfather and a friend, and he left us before we were ready to have him go.

Retired Navy Captain William H. (Henry) Reed lost a brave fight with a blood disorder on Friday, April 4 at Balboa Naval Hospital, where he had been admitted April 2. He died the way he lived, with dignity and courage. With him were his wife of 49 years, Dolores (Dodo,) a small group of loving friends and the Reverend Steve Mather of Coronado Community Church.

Bill was born on Dec. 26, 1935 (San Francisco County), spending much of his childhood in Long Beach (Los Angeles), CA. At Lakewood Junior High School he met a willowy blonde classmate named Dolores (Ann) Collier. He loved to tell of walking down the hall behind her in eighth grade “really liking those long legs.” They graduated together from Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, after which Bill went on to USC, graduating in 1958 and entering flight school in Pensacola, Fla. that same year. He and Dodo were married the day he was commissioned as an ensign on May 1, 1959. He served his country as a naval officer for exactly 27 years, retiring on May 1, 1986. Bill had three commands at sea and served on four different aircraft carriers during the Vietnam War. His friend Tom Mustin remembers Bill talking about the tragic 1966 fire on board the Oriskany where 44 men lost their lives, many of them aviators. “He told me that a lot of the guys had given up hope and were saying their final prayers. He said, ‘Not me. I was gonna find a way out of there.' And of course he did.”

His medals included the Legion of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals, six Air Medals, two Navy Commendation Medals, the Navy Achievement Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, three Navy Unit Commendations, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 10 Stars and many others.

After retirement, Bill was vice president of SYS Engineering in San Diego. An active member of the Coronado Cays Yacht Club, he was the only person ever to serve as commodore twice. Bill was a also a member of Rotary International of Coronado, the Order of the Blue Gavel, the Naval Order of the United States, the Association of Naval Aviation, the National Rifle Association and Unconcerned Citizens. Recently, Bill and Dodo embarked on a new business venture, Curves of Coronado, where Bill was a familiar sight, poring over the books.

Survivors, in addition to Dolores, are his brother Russell Reed; son Michael Reed; daughter Julie Farrell; daughter and son-in-law Christine Reed and Rich Farrell; and four grandchildren, Lucas; Kaitlyn; Thomas; and Henry.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. Donations in memory of Bill Reed may be made to www.hugsforchildren.org, an organization that aids orphaned children in Uganda.

Source: Coronado Eagle & Journal, Coronado (San Diego), CA; online Edition, 04-17-2008
Train Smashes Truck, Kills Two in S.S.F.

Wreck Carried for 150 Feet Along Track
One Occupant Stripped of Clothes; Other Cut to Pieces

(Times News Service)
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 23. - Hugh L. Cavagnaro, 24, and Jack E. Herman, 33, partners in a San Francisco painting and roofing firm, were killed instantly yesterday at 5:45 p.m. when their pickup truck was struck by a south-bound Southern Pacific commuter train at the Linden and Dollar Avenue crossing.
The 1952 model pickup truck, driven by Cavagnaro, was carried 150 feet and both men were thrown from the cab of the vehicle.
The crushed body of Cavagnaro, who lives at 331 Cardova Street, San Francisco, was not immediately identifiable.
Herman, a resident of 615 Ellis Street, San Francisco, was found several feet from the demolished truck minus all but his underwear. His outer clothing was torn off as he was thrown from the car.
The two men, approaching the crossing from the southeast, stopped for warning signals indicating approach of a northbound train, the Southern Pacific "Daylight."
After the "Daylight" had passed, they proceeded across and were caught on the right-of-way by the commuter train, which was San Jose bound.
Cavagnaro's wife, Dolores, said she believed the two men were returning home from a job in Redwood city.

Seven Trains Held Up
Police Sgt. Silvio Stagnaro reported the train, which was traveling at 60 miler per hour, according to Southern Pacific officials, carried the death car 150 feet and continued on for 327 feet before stopping.

Seven trains southward bound, were delayed a half hour while the commuter train's locomotive underwent minor repairs.
Robert E. Fitzpatrick, 52, of 42 Curtis drive, San Jose, engineer of the commuter train, said he didn't see the vehicle on the tracks until too late. The accident occurred at dusk. There are no crossing gates. Red flashing signals hang at either edge of the crossing and swing back and forth upon the approach of a train from either direction.
Bodies of both men were taken to Nauman and Lincoln mortuary in South San Francisco.

Called "Death Crossing"
The crossing, which has been labeled a "death crossing" by police, was the scene of two fatal accidents last year. City officials at that time contacted the Southern Pacific about installation of crossing gates. Cost was estimated at $9,000. Claiming Linden Avenue is an intercity highway, the city council asked the county board of supervisors to participate in the installation of crossing gates, with the railroad paying 50 per cent. The request was declined on grounds there was no money available
Funeral services for the victims are pending. Cavagnaro, a native of Fresno, is survived by his wife, Dolores; a son, Hugh L., Jr.; his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Cavagnaro, Stockton; and two sisters, Elaine Cavagnaro and Daisy Cavagnaro, both of San Francisco. Herman, a native of Oakland was unmarried.
Times, The | San Mateo, California | Friday, January 23, 1953 | Page 3
===========================
Inquest Friday in Crossing Deaths
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Feb.
26.—An inquest into the deaths of Hugh Cavagnaro and Jack Herman, driver and passenger killed in a truck by a Southern Pacific train January 22 at Linden and Dollar avenues here, will be held tomorrow at 10:30 a. m. at Nauman & Lincoln mortuary.
Cavagnaro and Herman, San Francisco painting contractors, were returning from a job in Redwood City during the early evening when the truck was struck by the train.
can't find my GGrandmother

My GGrandmother lived nearly her entire adult life in San Francisco and is listed in the city directory up until 1963. Then she disappears. I've tried everything to find a date and place of death with no luck. She was born Adria Beatrice Cecil 1 Jul 1878 in CA. but most of her life she used Beatrice as her first name. Her second marriage was to Howard Douglass Kinney in 1910 and as far as I know, never married again. I can't find an obit, death certificate, SSDI entry, CA death index entry, nothing. Any hints? Something I didn't try?

I am having a hard time find these names and there are no Kurt Anderson's in California 1930.
I have scoured the indexes for Californi and I hoping that
some living family will find this posting.

The above notation is written in my great grandmother's Bible. She was married to Clive Hannis in Long Beach, CA, November 1904. Mr. Hannis died in an accidental drowning in Oakland Harbor in March 1907; they were living in Oakland at the time. She remarried in Oakland in 1908.

Does anyone know if the above address still exists? (Is Ocean Boulevard now the Great Highway?) I am trying to identify what type of building would have been at this address between 1904 and 1907, in an attempt to ascertain if they were living with family or in a boarding house.

Is there any way (reverse directory, etc.) to research an address for this time frame? All suggestions appreciated.

It is possible
that they may be Hazel and Bernice .I have searched through the census but with so many Peterson's it is almost impossible to know for sure. An obit would be very helpful.
I believe that Anna may have be divorced.
Thank you,
Alicia Koski Marshall
Capt. Archibald E. Cann (1854- )

This is a "shot in the dark" at best, but I have been searching for death/burial information on my great grandfather for quite a number of years now. He was born in Nova Scotia in 1854, emigrated to the U. S. Pacific Northwest where he was Captain of the first lightship on the west coast off the coast of northern Oregon in 1892.

I have last found a record of him in the 1930 Census as a naturalized American citizen living in San Francisco with his sister and brother-in-law, but nothing after that. I do not know if he died and/or was buried in San Francisco or not, because I have not been able to locate him there so can only guess. His entry in the 1930 Census shows him as a "Ship's captain with an oil company," which I believe to be Standard Oil but this is not documented.

If anyone out there can shed any light on this mystery for me, or perhaps find a death and/or burial record for him, I would be most grateful after many years of searching.

David
