The California Genealogical Society had been located in
San Francisco for years. They are now in Oakland. They
could be of great assistance. There is no San Francisco
Genealogical Society, but there is a Historical Society.
There are many City Diretories, even unto the 1960's.
Many have been microfilmed. Sutro Library has quite
a few. Check the catalog on their web site.
Also as James Robinson is a Scottish name, you might
check with the San Francisco Caledonia Club or the
St. Andrews Society to see if he had been a member.
The CA GenWeb site for San Francisco is also a site
that will have information to assist you in your
SF search. If he died and was buried in SF, you will
find a burial in COLMA, San Mateo County, as no cemeteries
exist in San Francisco. Everyone gets buried just south
of the City.
Good luck to you in your endeavors.
