I lived on Bradman Dr in the late 60s on Bradman Dr, graduated from Point Loma. I looked at MapQuest and other Map sites and it appears that Bradman Dr no longer exist, looks like the apartments and homes that were there were torn down and the streets rearranged.

Does anyone have a map from that time frame of what is called the Midway District that shows Bradman Dr.?

HILMA (ANDERSON) MOUNTAIN

Married to ARTEMUS MOUNTAIN. Colon,Nebraska then Pine Creek,SD, then San Diego,CA. HILMA is the Aunt of two sisters I am looking for. Her little sister ELEANOR NAOMI ANDERSON CRANDALL, had two daughters with DR FRANK GUILFORD CRANDALL. They lived in the Los Angeles area at the time of ELEANOR's death in 1981. They are ELEANOR LOUISE CRANDAL (Mrs. E.W."Jack"Robertson,Altadena,CA) and LAURA BELLE CRANDALL (Mrs. Fred Downs,Whittier,CA). Eleanor and Frank Crandall were divorced at the time of their deaths.

I believe my Dad was a half-brother to the two sisters. My Dad died in 1999. At birth he was put up for adoption in Sioux City, Iowa. His birth Mom was a 19 year old student from Logan, Iowa. She was adopted after her father disappeared in Davenport, Iowa around 1903, and a year later her mother died in a fire. She became Louise Grace Kennedy. The birth certificate (1921) list Frank Crandall as the father. A letter to my adoptive grandparents for 1940 indicated the father was a med student at UNMC in Omaha at the time. Frank Crandall graduated from UNMC in 1921.

I have left many posts all over California for the two daughters. No response in several years. If there is anyone in the Mountain family that might help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Ron Osborn
Omaha,NE

Question for "experts" in SanDiego - cemetery related

I found the name of a deceased relative, and cemetery, who died in 1957, on a web site that is part of the California Tombstone project. The info was submitted in 2004. I have no reason to doubt the authenticity of the info. I called the cemetery to get exact burial location. They told me they have no record of the person.

How could this be? Someone obviously saw the marker and documented it. This is a large public cemetery. They had no explanation for me, when I presented my info, that was on the cemetery reading.

Would anyone have any idea of what my next step should be? Would anyone have knowledge of this "California Tombstone Project", and who I could contact? Would the folks doing the readings have kept notes, re: section of cemetery, etc.?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I am looking for information on Edward Edmond Rowe
He has been on the U.S. Census by both first names.
Born Born Feb 16, 1866 in New York
He move to California some time between 1895 and 1920
I find in in San Diego in 1920 and in Los Angeles in 1930
Family records indicate that he died in October of 1963, they do not indicate an exact date or location. However, the rest of the family, mother, father, brothers and sisters all died in San Diego or Los Angeles. He is the son of Stephen B Rowe and Annette E. Stevens Rowe
I am at a loss of where to find the information--you would think there would be a social security index, but I do not see one.
Is there anyone out there who can help me locate a date of death?
You can reach me at ruththesleuth@peoplepc.cm

Thank you so much
Ruth
Margaret Hiltrud Steinborn, born: 9th April 1934 in Forst, Lausitz, Germany

and

2. Helga Hiltrud Elvira Steinborn, born 29th March 1937 in Forst, Lausitz, Germany.

Both fled from the GDR to America during the 1950s. Unfortunately, I only found an entry at ancestry.com for Elvira Steinborn, whereby she married a man called Jose D. Payumo in Dec. 1965 and got divorced in Dec. 1968. That happened in San Diego/CA.

But thats all I found. If anyone has any information on Hiltrud and Elvira Steinborn, please contact me. Thank you

Dave

I am working to help our family clear title to a property that has not been clear since 1966. One of the hiers that I have been unable to find is Manley Lee Williams who died in San Diego County on 23 April 1979. Is it possible that someone could check for an obituary for me? I believe that his death was near National City but that is purely a guess. I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions on locating this man's family. I believe that he had a daughter and a son.

LOUISE was the mother, Louise Mae the daughter. The mother was the second daughter of my Great-Grandfather MICHAEL HYNES, died 1910 in Davenport,Iowa. The only name listed as a contact in July 1910 was a LOUISA in the Davenport Library records. My cousins and I are trying to find out what happened to Michael between the years 1903 and 1910. He disappeared one night after going across the Davenport bridge into Rock Island, IL. The family moved back to Perry,Iowa where the mother, Lavina Peel Hynes died in a tragic fire. All the kids were put of adoption, including Louise Hynes. Looking for contact with any living Curlers or Pennings. Thanks.

Ron Osborn
Omaha,NE

Hi - Looking for BYERS and ROSEBERRY family members who may be related to Kathleen Genevieve Byers Roseberry; I have a copy of a packet of info from her on the family tree (work that she did). We here in Pittsburgh (and Fayette Co, PA, Connellsville area) are doing research on our ancestors: O'Broskey/Obarowski, Stacel/Stassel/Stoesel, and BYERS. Wilhelmina Obarowski (different spellings used) married Edward Stacel (again, several variations of the name). Wilhelmina immigrated from Germany and had two BYERS sons to a previous marriage - probably in Germany, WILLIAM and RUDOLPH BYERS. Kathleen Genevieve Byers (Roseberry) is the daughter of Bert James Byers. There are also Akron (Summit Co) OHIO connections to these families. IF ANYONE RECOGNIZES THESE FAMILY NAMES AND WOULD LIKE TO COLLABORATE ON THE RESEARCH, PLEASE CONTACT ME AT touch-and-go@webtv.net THANKS, Joey

Ben COHEN; 1921-2006

OBITUARY
Ben Cohen; shy Coronado civic leader loved challenging projects

By Jack Williams
STAFF WRITER
December 10, 2006
Port and planning commissioner. Coronado councilman. School board president. Hospital board member. Mayoral candidate. Business owner.
The roles changed, but Ben Cohen's understated, conciliatory nature never did.
As he reached his mid-70s, he took on one last project: spearheading efforts to expand and renovate the Coronado Public Library.
“He said, 'I hope to be around long enough to see this completed,'” recalled his wife, Loris.
In June 2005, the 1,000-square-foot library opened on Orange Avenue, easing chronic overcrowding and rewarding Mr. Cohen and his colleagues for the decade-long commitment.
“Ben was involved in so many facets of civic life in Coronado that he always had very sage advice,” said Christian Esquevin, the library services director. “He was very strong in picking out what was important about an issue and not chasing after windmills. He knew what direction to follow.”
Mr. Cohen died Dec. 2 at Coronado Hospital, where he was taken after collapsing at his home about three weeks ago. He was 85.
His family attributed the death to natural causes and advancing age.
“Ben was a very, very shy and reserved man,” his wife said. “When I was dating him, my dad said, 'Does he ever say anything?' He listened to everybody and always did his homework.”
Although Cohen admitted that mingling with crowds and making speeches were not his strengths, he enjoyed talking to people one on one to resolve problems.
The low-key approach resulted in a string of political victories that Mr. Cohen took into Coronado's 1986 mayoral race, which he lost to incumbent R.H. Dorman.
“When he had to campaign, he opened up a little,” his wife said.
As a port commissioner, including the role of chairman in 1983, he was intensely involved in one of San Diego's biggest-ever projects: development of the $125 million San Diego Convention Center on Navy Field. Ground was broken in May 1985.
Because of his efforts on a subcommittee charged with shaping plans for the Convention Center, Mr. Cohen's term on the Port Commission was extended so he could participate in the final decision.
“His quiet, behind-the-scenes efforts contributed to the move to establish strict cost controls for the project,” a 1985 Tribune editorial stated.
When he stepped down from his commissioner post, Mr. Cohen left his options open.
“I love politics and the challenge of working on a project,” he told The San Diego Union. “If I accomplish something, I get satisfaction – personal satisfaction.”
Mr. Cohen, of German Jewish descent, was born June 22, 1921, in Little Rock, Ark.
He served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II, including a tour in the Pacific theater.
“I met him on a blind date, a week before my 16th birthday, when he was a sophomore at Washington University in St. Louis,” his wife said. They married in 1945 and moved to Coronado in 1948.
Mr. Cohen, who earned his degree in business administration, joined in-laws in a family business, the Coronado Department Store. He operated the store until it closed in 1981, then joined another family business, Ferer's Surplus.
He became vice president and general manager of Ferer's, a store that evolved from military surplus to outdoor and camping gear. The store, which his father-in-law helped found, closed in 1986.
Mr. Cohen's success as a charitable fundraiser started him on a course of community service.
“He did so well they asked him to join the Coronado Planning Commission,” his wife said.
Mr. Cohen served as a Coronado planner from 1954 to 1959. He served on the school board from 1957 to 1968, then was elected to his first of three terms on the City Council.
During his third council term, his colleagues appointed him to the Port Commission.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Loris; daughters, Paula Cohen of Coronado and Tani Cohen of Los Angeles; and son, David of Encinitas.
A celebration of life is scheduled for 1 p.m. Jan. 6 at Coronado Public Library. Donations are suggested to Friends of the Coronado Public Library, Coronado Hospital Association and San Diego Hospice.
Robin Winchester GOODENOUGH; Obituary 1924-2008

As published in the Coronado Eagle & Journal (Coronado [San Diego], California) online Edition 05-01-2008

Robin Winchester Goodenough: 1924 - 2008

On Monday, April 7, Robin W. Goodenough passed away in his Coronado home. One would be hard pressed to put a label on Robin's professional life and numerous accomplishments as he had many interests and wore many hats although in later years whether East Coast or West Coast, you would rarely see him not wearing his UDT/Navy SEAL baseball cap with the greatest of pride.

Robin was born in Waterbury (New Haven), Conn. on Aug. 19, 1924 to Robert Delancy and Agnes Weaver Goodenough. While attending Yale University, he enrolled in the Navy's reserve program and, as a young naval officer, served in the Pacific during World War II. After the war ended, he returned to Yale to complete his bachelor's degree and graduated with honors in two majors, pre-med and theology, in 1947.

Following in his grandfather's footsteps, Robin then entered medical school but with the outbreak of the Korean War he returned to active duty, volunteering to serve as a Navy Frogman with Under Water Demolition (UDT) Teams One and Three. Wounded in action, he was awarded the Purple Heart and for his bravery was also awarded the Bronze Star as well as a special commendation for operations behind enemy lines. Robin continued his military career as a naval reservist, serving as group commander for the Eleventh Naval District before moving to Washington (DC) in 1972 to become a special assistant to the secretary of defense at the Pentagon under the direction of Admiral Ray Peet. With this assignment he traveled the globe visiting an impressive 46 foreign countries. Robin ultimately retired with the rank of captain, U.S. Naval Reserves, but continued to enjoy contact with his fellow reservists and UDT/SEAL veterans.

Robin's ongoing interest in learning made him forever the student himself and also a mentor and teacher to others. Early on he taught math at Mission Bay High School and even took on a summer school teaching assignment at Coronado High School for an accelerated math course during his tenure as mayor of Coronado. Robin earned a master's degree at San Diego State University, a Ph.D. in psychology at United States International University and a juris doctorate at the University of San Diego. After his move to the East Coast in 1972 and the completion of his assignment at the Pentagon, Robin accepted a teaching position at the University of Baltimore's Law School. Here he was able to marry two of his primary intellectual interests, law and psychology, specializing in psychology and the law as well as international law in addition to other courses.

The depth of Robin's interest in the human mind and man's intrinsic nature led him to study extensively under the tutelage of Viktor Frankel, world famous advocate of logotherapy and author of the landmark book, “Man's Search for Meaning.” Frankel's body of work has been widely considered on the cutting edge in the arena of modern psychology. As a result of Robin's both intense and ongoing work with Frankel, he received a Diplomate at the Vienna School of Medicine.

Although Robin spent the bulk of his time on the east coast in his later years, many of the everyday sights and facilities in Coronado can be attributed to his active involvement in community development and improvement during his terms of office, first as a Coronado city councilman and then twice as our city's mayor (1954-1962 and 1970-1972.) His leadership led to the building of the Coronado Municipal Golf Course (the brain-child of Commodore Ben Wyatt) by dredging a portion of the bay. He also surged ahead with the construction of a new municipal jail, the building of the bridge between Coronado and San Diego, the conversion of the then city dump to what we now know as the Coronado Cays and the construction of the Olympic sized municipal pool on the Silver Strand. He was responsible for helping regain the city's legal title to the oceanfront, the building of a brand new public library as well as the construction of the new tennis center and the revamping of other tennis courts in various parks throughout the city. Perhaps most important in the list of achievements under his terms in office is the lawsuit that Robin brought to the California Supreme Court: An initiative to allow the people to directly elect the mayor rather than letting the council members choose among themselves.

One of Robin's favorite sayings was, “The best exercise you can perform as a human being is to lift someone else up” and his lifelong attempt to honor this philosophy can be seen in his philanthropic work. In the 1960s Robin joined with Dr. Jim Turpin to adopt orphanages in Mexico and provide basic needs as well as medical care. He was known to his law students whom he taught over a span of several decades as the professor who truly cared about their lot in life, not just as aspiring lawyers, but as human beings and was available at all hours to help with whatever problems they might have. This past February, although himself wheelchair bound, Robin distributed crackers, juice and reading glasses to the homeless at Horton Plaza with his daughter Gay.

Robin is survived by his wife, Marina (nee Strelby); daughters Joy Robin Goodenough of Nokesville, Va.; Merry Goodenough Fugate of San Francisco; Gay Goodenough of Coronado; sister Ruth Setter of Palmdale; grandchildren Christopher and Nicholas Campbell of Coronado and Anwyn Fugate of San Francisco as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

An interment ceremony at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery (San Diego), Ca will be held on Monday, May 12 at 1 p.m. A reception will follow in the Oceanview Room at the Point Loma Submarine Base. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to San Diego Hospice, 4311 Third Avenue, San Diego (San Diego), CA 92103, 688-1600 or www.sdhospice.org.

Surnames: GOODENOUGH, WEAVER, PEET, FRANKEL, WYATT, TURPIN, STRELBY, SETTER, CAMPBELL, FUGATE
William (Bill) Henry REED; Obituary 1935-2008

Capt. Bill Reed, U.S. Navy (ret.): December 26, 1935 - April 4, 2008

He wore a tuxedo with all the ease and elegance of Cary Grant. He was a man of grace and manners, a man's man who never met a lady he couldn't charm. He was a leader, a war hero, a quiet man who was never at a loss for words. Rich of voice and vocabulary, he was a storyteller, a reader and a thinker. He finished the crossword puzzle every day. He was at home everywhere: the tennis courts, the ski slopes, the cockpit of a Navy airplane, the deck of a Navy ship or at the helm of his own sailboat. He could whip up a superb spaghetti à la carbonara for friends on a moment's notice. His martinis were legendary and lethal. He played piano and blue-grass banjo and loved each and every dog and cat that graced his household over the years. He was a husband, a father, a grandfather and a friend, and he left us before we were ready to have him go.

Retired Navy Captain William H. (Henry) Reed lost a brave fight with a blood disorder on Friday, April 4 at Balboa Naval Hospital, where he had been admitted April 2. He died the way he lived, with dignity and courage. With him were his wife of 49 years, Dolores (Dodo,) a small group of loving friends and the Reverend Steve Mather of Coronado Community Church.

Bill was born on Dec. 26, 1935, spending much of his childhood in Long Beach. At Lakewood Junior High School he met a willowy blonde classmate named Dolores (Ann) Collier. He loved to tell of walking down the hall behind her in eighth grade “really liking those long legs.” They graduated together from Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, after which Bill went on to USC, graduating in 1958 and entering flight school in Pensacola, Fla. that same year. He and Dodo were married the day he was commissioned as an ensign on May 1, 1959. He served his country as a naval officer for exactly 27 years, retiring on May 1, 1986. Bill had three commands at sea and served on four different aircraft carriers during the Vietnam War. His friend Tom Mustin remembers Bill talking about the tragic 1966 fire on board the Oriskany where 44 men lost their lives, many of them aviators. “He told me that a lot of the guys had given up hope and were saying their final prayers. He said, ‘Not me. I was gonna find a way out of there.' And of course he did.”

His medals included the Legion of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals, six Air Medals, two Navy Commendation Medals, the Navy Achievement Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, three Navy Unit Commendations, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 10 Stars and many others.

After retirement, Bill was vice president of SYS Engineering in San Diego. An active member of the Coronado Cays Yacht Club, he was the only person ever to serve as commodore twice. Bill was a also a member of Rotary International of Coronado, the Order of the Blue Gavel, the Naval Order of the United States, the Association of Naval Aviation, the National Rifle Association and Unconcerned Citizens. Recently, Bill and Dodo embarked on a new business venture, Curves of Coronado, where Bill was a familiar sight, poring over the books.

Survivors, in addition to Dolores, are his brother Russell Reed; son Michael Reed; daughter Julie Farrell; daughter and son-in-law Christine Reed and Rich Farrell; and four grandchildren, Lucas; Kaitlyn; Thomas; and Henry.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. Donations in memory of Bill Reed may be made to www.hugsforchildren.org, an organization that aids orphaned children in Uganda.

Source: Coronado Eagle & Journal, Coronado (San Diego), CA; online Edition, 04-17-2008

Hello,

I'm going to be in the San Diego area next week,
and have about a half day free, so I thought
I'd do a little genealogy research.

So I was wondering what is the best library in San Diego
for that?

I'm especially looking for branches that have newspapers
on microfilm, so I can look up obits of cousins of mine.

Thanks,
John

Looking for information on this family who were shown in 1930 US census as living at Nags Head, North Carolina as follows:-

Anthony Bernosky 30, Railroad Clerk
Nora Bernosky 28 Wife
George Bernosky 10 Son
Martha Hogarth 68 Mother In law

I think that the wife Nora Bernosky and the mother in law, Martha HOGARTH are the mother and sister of WILLIAM R HOGARTH b. 1900 NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.

He was in Liverpool, England in 1920's where he married Margaret E Miller in early 1927. On 10 March 1928 their son, William Kenneth Hogarth was born in Liverpool.

William senior went back to the states leaving Margaret and their son behind in Liverpool.

We have a photo of William and his sister Nora standing each side of their mother who is seated in a chair on the porch of their USA home. It was taken many years ago and Nora sent the photo to Liverpool, England a long time ago. The message on the back of it says "this is my brother Willie and me with our mother. I thought you and Kenneth would like it!" It's signed Nora.

William looks to be about aged 8 on it and Nora about 6/7.

I am seeking information about William Hogarth and his family for his grandson in Liverpool, England who wants to learn about his American ancestors!

Would be grateful for any help, thank you.
Michael Anthony MONSOOR; 1981-2006

Sailor killed in Iraq awarded Medal of Honor
Michael A. Monsoor, who grew up in Garden Grove, has been selected to receive the medal posthumously for his efforts to save fellow SEALs during a firefight in 2006.
By Tony Perry
Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

April 1, 2008

On the last day of his life, on a rooftop in Ramadi, Navy SEAL Michael A. Monsoor was assigned to protect three SEAL snipers. When an insurgent's grenade lobbed from the street bounced off Monsoor's chest, he didn't hesitate. He yelled "Grenade!" and pounced on it even though he had a clear path of escape.

He was dead within 30 minutes, but he had saved the lives of three SEALs.

On Monday, the White House announced that Monsoor, 25, who grew up in Garden Grove, has been selected to receive the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest medal for combat bravery, for his actions that violent day, Sept. 29, 2006.

It will be the third Medal of Honor bestowed for bravery in Iraq.

Monsoor's family and his fellow SEALs said Monday that even as they grieve over his death they are not surprised that he sought the safety of others before his own.

Sara Monsoor, a pediatric nurse at Children's Hospital of Orange County, said her brother never mentioned the dangers of his deployment in his e-mails and phone calls home. Still, the family knew he had been assigned to what was the most violent city in Anbar province, the home of the most hard-core elements in the Sunni Arab insurgency.

"We knew things were difficult there and if anything happened, Mike would be the first to jump in and try to make it better," his sister said. His fellow SEALs, she added, "were like his brothers."

Navy Lt. Cmdr. Seth Stone, Monsoor's platoon commander on the mission that cost his life, remembered Monsoor's sense of humor and dedication to duty. "Mike never complained. He always had a smile," Stone said.

He said he knew something had gone tragically wrong on the rooftop that day when he heard the sickening sound of the muffled explosion.

President Bush is set to present the medal to Monsoor's parents, George and Sally Monsoor, at the White House on April 8.

"We're looking at it as a way to celebrate Mike," his sister said of the ceremony.

Monsoor is buried at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, across the bay from SEAL headquarters in Coronado.

A petty officer second class, he will be the first in the Navy to receive the Medal of Honor for actions in Iraq.

Only one Marine, Cpl. Jason Dunham, and one Army soldier, Sgt. 1st Class Paul R. Smith, have been awarded the medal for actions in Iraq. SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy received the Medal of Honor for service in Afghanistan. All three awards were posthumous.

Monsoor has also been awarded a Silver Star for rescuing a wounded SEAL during the same deployment. While under continuous fire, he dashed into a street to drag his comrade to safety. He never told his family about his heroism. They learned about it the month before his death, while attending another SEAL's funeral.

Born in Long Beach, Monsoor played football at Garden Grove High School, graduating in 1999. He enjoyed snowboarding, body-boarding and spearfishing, as well as riding his motorcycle and driving his Corvette. His father and one of his brothers were Marines, but he decided to enlist in the Navy in 2001.

The family talks about him constantly, his sister said: "We just try to carry on. We're all totally proud of him."

Monsoor completed the grueling 25-week SEAL training in 2004 on his second try. A broken heel had forced him to drop out on his initial attempt. The dropout rate for many SEAL trainee classes exceeds 50%.

In Ramadi, Monsoor's Delta Platoon, SEAL Team Three, was assigned to mentor Iraqi army troops. In late 2006, insurgents were spread throughout the city and had the support -- either through shared ideology or intimidation -- of many residents.

As a communicator and machine-gunner on patrols, Monsoor carried 100 pounds of gear in temperatures often exceeding 100 degrees. He took a lead position to protect the platoon from frontal assault.

On three-quarters of their patrols, the SEALs drew insurgent fire, Stone said. Some firefights lasted for hours. Over about five months, the platoon killed at least 84 insurgents and detained numerous others.

On Sept. 29, the platoon engaged four insurgents in a firefight. Anticipating further attacks, Monsoor and other SEALs had taken up a rooftop position. Civilians aiding the insurgents blocked off the streets, and a nearby mosque blared out a message for people to rise up against the Americans and the Iraqi soldiers.

Monsoor's duty was to protect three SEAL snipers, two of whom were 15 feet away. His position made him the only SEAL on the rooftop with quick access to an escape route.

But when the grenade hit him and fell onto the roof, he "chose to protect his comrades by the sacrifice of his own life," according to a Navy report.

The two SEAL snipers nearest to Monsoor were injured in the blast. Monsoor was immediately evacuated for medical care, but it was too late.

The SEALs, a tough and close-knit, group, were deeply affected by his death, Stone said.
