Dr. Norman Miller, 78

Dr. Norman Rae Miller, a charter board member of the Colton-Redlands-Yucaipa Regional Occupational Program (CRY-ROP), died April 9 in Yucaipa from congestive heart failure. He was 78. Miller was born Feb. 27, 1930, in West Haven, Conn. After serving three years as an optometry officer in the Air Force, he entered into private practice in Yucaipa in 1957.
He was co-founder of the Yucaipa Big Band and the Yucaipa Community Orchestra. He served as a past president of the Yucaipa Lions Club and on the board of directors of the Yucaipa Valley Chamber of Commerce.
He was a 15-year member of the board of trustees of the Southern California College of Optometry in Fullerton. He served many roles, including two terms as chairman, and was awarded trustee emeritus status following his retirement from the board.
Miller also served on the Board of Education for the Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District for 21 years, including five terms as president of the board. He was honored for his dedication to public education by the educational fraternity Phi Beta Kappa, which named him Lay Citizen of the Year.
Survivors include brother Dr. A. Robert Miller of Oak Glen; children Marguerite Miller of Odessa, Texas, Diane Schertell and husband Dennis of Yucaipa, Dr. Steven Miller and wife Patty of Yucaipa, and Dr. Norman Robert Miller and wife Kathleen of Boulder, Colo.; and grandchildren Trevor and Morgan Miller, Diana and Danielle Schertell, Alan and Alyson Miller and Kiannah and Quinn Miller.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 19, at the United Methodist Church, 35177 Beech St., Yucaipa.
