Would someone be willing to look to see if there are obituaries for Beulah Ramage (d. 8/20/1914) and Marilla Conner (d. 3/2/1915) in the (Hollister) Free Lance newspaper, which is available on microfilm at the state library?

I do not live in CA and have not had much luck pursuing these obituaries in San Benito county. The historical society there doesn't have the Free Lance on microfilm, and while the paper itself does, they don't do research for people. So if someone could look up these obits for me, or point me in the direction of an organization that does research at the state library I'd be very grateful.

I am trying to trace my ancestors, the Allanson family. I know they immigrated to the USA in 1881 and have found some of them in the US census returns in Hollister, San Benito. The family is John and Ann Allanson and their children Ernest, Ann, John & Edward. I believe they moved to Hollister in about 1890 and John snr ran a stationery business (though he had been a tailor back in England)I know Ann snr died in 1892, though I haven't found any death or burial records for her. I do have the US census returns for John and Ernest for 1900-1910. Does anyone else have any info about the family?

Robert BURNS family of Hollister, CA

I'm researching the Robery Burns family. Robert was originally from Maine. I have the following information from him which I found in an old newspaper:

Author: Luther A. Ingersoll, Editor (1893)

ROBERT BURNS, who resides near Mulberry, San Benito County, CA, is one of the most substantial farmers of the country.

Mr. Burns is a native of Madison, a town on the Kennebec River in Somerset County, Maine, and was born May 18, 1839. His father, Samuel S. Burns, a farmer by occupation, was of Scotch nativity and a relative of Robert Burns, the eminent Scotch poet. The subject of our sketch came to California in 1860, making the journey via Panama, and landing at San Francisco. He located at San Juan, on the San Justo ranch, and in 1878 went to San Luis Obispo, where he continued stock raising, operating on the Huerbuero ranch. In 1884, he took up his abode on his present farm, 640 acres, on the San Benito Creek.

Mr. Burns was married in 1870 to Miss Floretta Willington, a native of Maine. Their four children are: Willis L., Mabel E., Gertrude and Herbert, all living at present with their parents.

========================================================

Robert's son Herbert married my great aunt Ruth Mullen and their son was Robert Lowell Burns (born in 1925). If anyone has any more information about the family, please let me know!

Thanks!

Laura (Mullen) Zupko

Does anyone know how to find out information on where and when our ancestors arrived in the US from Portugal? In the 1800's the only way of passage was via a ship. Many Portuguese who settled in San Benito County came from the Azore Islands such as Pico and Faial. My great-grandfather came here in 1860 from Pico. Where could I find out what ship he came on, date of arrival and port of entry? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you! Cynthia C.

The persons listed above were at one time or another affiliated with the Brewery. It was believed to be in business from 1874-1892. The proprietors are listed above in chronilogical order. Any information on one of these fellows, or on any other nineteenth century California Brewery, for that matter, would be of great interest. I hear that the building still stands, and hope to visit the site soon......Thank You.....Brian Weatherman
BUTTS Family of Hollister

Looking for descendants of RUFUS BUTTS who is shown in Hollister on the 1870 U.S. Census, then Monterey County, now San Benito County. Wife was Caelia, and children Irine, William, Esther, John, Andrew J., Nellie, Fannie and Robert. Rufus was born in TN, lived in MO prior to coming to California and locating in Plumas Co., where he, his wife and two oldest children are shown on the 1860 Census. They and their descendants obtained many land grants in San Benito County. The youngest child, Robert Carter Butts, died in about 1940. Some descendants died in San Benito County as late as the 1970's, but we are unable to find even one descendant living there now. Can anyone help? We would be most grateful. Rufus was the brother of our great-grandfather, David Cummins Butts of Sonoma, CA and of James M. Butts. They are shown on the MO 1850 Census as "BUTT" and apparently added the "S" to their name when they arrived in California in 1860. Louis Tirapelle

One of my great-uncles, John Ramage, and his daughters, Beulah and Sarah, moved to Hollister around 1906. The two girls would have graduated from high school between 1906-1914. I'd like to check the yearbooks and find their pictures, if possible. I know it's a long shot, but is there anyone with access to such old yearbooks, or can anyone tell me who might have yearbooks dating this far back?
Looking for an obituary from 1900 for Ann(Anna)Boyd. She lived on Monterey Street in Hollister. Her sons Andrew and Thomas also lived in the area. Before moving to Hollister she lived in Nevada and was possibly born in Tennessee. Her husband was William Boyd and he died several years before her in Genoa, Nevada. She is listed in the 1900 census so she probably died after June of that year. She's buried at IOOF cemetery. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Thank you!!

Looking for anyone with info on Charles Souther Bennet, born abt 1860 in Vermont {I think}, died in 1926 in California. I know it's not much to go on but it's all I have. About 1884 married Bertha Jane Clark, where not known. Bertha was born abt 1860, most likely in Iowa, she died in California, date not known. As far as I know they only had two daughters: Ethel Clark Bennet, who married Iver George Ostrander and Eva Bennet. I have info on the daughter, but absolutely nothing on Charles & Bertha except their names. Instead of being a brick wall this has been a mountain for me. I hope this reaches someone that can help me. Thank you.

Nancy

I am looking for any info on the Byles and Prater families from Hernandez Valley area. Joseph Byles came from England on a Royal Navy ship, jumped ship in San Francsco, joined the US Navy on the shipp USS Benicia, served as a nurse on the ship in 1871 when it carried King David Kalakaua of Hawaii to San Francisco, and he eventually mustered out, living first at NIcasio for a short time and then moving on to Hernandez. He met his wife Emily Jane PRater there and they lived at the 'Tirado and Acosta places' according to Beyond the Pinnacles. He later discovered the Archer Quicksilver Mine. Any info is appreciated and I have much to share on both families.
John Robles

CANTUA Family - San Juan 1788 to ? - Need info

Here is what little I know of the Cantua Family in California (I am searching for more information):

The Cantua family traces its history in the Americas to Ygnacio Cantua who was born about 1740 in Rio Yaqui, Sonora, Vice Royalty of New Spain Mexico. Ygnacio served as one of the twenty select Soldado de Anza Expedition in 1774 and was discharged in 1780. He married Maria Gertrudis del Castillo and together they had ten children. Ygnacio was settled at San Juan Bautista by 1788 where a son Jos?Juli? Cantua was born. He remained there the rest of his life and is buried at the mission. (Mission San Juan Bautista was founded June 24, 1797.)
One of Ygnacio뭩 sons was named Jos?de Guadalupe Cantua (born 1786), he went commonly by name Guadalupe Cantua. Guadalupe served in the army stationed at San Juan Bautista and lead the party that first explored Arroyo Cantua area and gathered the Indians from that area. Guadalupe later obtained a 4,389 acre land grant, San Luisito at San Luis Obispo. Guadalupe married Carmel (unknown last name) and together they had several children. Two of Guadalupe뭩 children, Lupe and Domingo ran with the famous Joaqu? Murrieta gang and lived at Arroyo Cantua. One of his daughters was Maria Guadalupe Cantua who married Jos?Hermenegildo V?quez in 1821 at Mission San Carlos de Monterey, Alta California. They had one child in 1835, his name was Tiburcio V?quez. Tiburcio become another of California뭩 most famous criminals.

You might find a little more information at http://www.picacho.org
Looking for information on the Boyds of Hollister, Ca. Thomas J Boyd was married to Estella Maria Rowe. Andrew E Boyd married Mary R Dudley. They are all buried in the I.O.O.F cemetary in Hollister. I'm looking mostly for information on Thomas and Andrew's parents and/or children. They were both originally from Nevada. I know their mother lived in Hollister but I need to confirm whether or not the Anna I Boyd also buried in the cemetary is her. I am the GG Granddaughter of their brother James and I'm having a hard time finding anything on these Boyds! Any information would really help! Thanks!!

Thomas J Boyd b.1863 in Nevada d.1935
Andrew E Boyd b.3/12/1868 in Nevada d.1/8/1948

The Hollister Bee
March 22, 1912

The funeral of Mrs. Mary MAHONEY took place at 11 o'clock last Sunday (17 March 12) from the family residence on Seventh street. Mrs. MAHONEY was 77 years and 19 days old at the time of her death. She was a native of Ireland, coming to this county in her early youth. The family settled near San Jose and moved to San Felipe in 1888 where she lived until two years ago, when she moved to Hollister. Her husband, the late William MAHONEY, died four years ago at San Felipe. The deceased died from paralysis, this being the second stroke she had sustained in about six months. Mrs. MAHONEY leaves three sons, five daughters, and two sisters. Her daughters are Mrs. J. H. HOUGH and Mrs. Bertha KOTELMAN of San Francisco, Mrs. Spence WHITE, Mrs. Rodger PODVA, and Mrs. J. R. GRUBB of Hollister. Her sons are John MAHONEY of San Francisco, Lewis and Henry MAHONEY of Hollister. Mrs. John DALY and Mrs. William CAGNEY are her sisters. She was also sister to the late William MCAULIFFE of Fairview. Mrs. MAHONEY was known and respected by nearly everybody in the county and she leaves a large circle of friends to mourn her lost. Mass was said at the Catholic Church and the remains were interred in the Catholic cemetery.

Back in both the 70's and in the late 80's there were some high profile murders that took place in Hollister. The Anderson Family in the 70's and the 2 others murders were committed by Gus Marlow. I've heard from various people that there are some books that have been written about these. I have searched high and low - does anyone know if there are any books on these cases?

I am trying to do some family history on my Grandmothers side of the family and I have no real information to go on. Her father was Frank Joseph Rose and her mother was Edna Wilson Rose. Her father died during surgery back in 1925
after he died - her mother left her to be raised by the Andrade family, while her brothers were raised by the Dutra family. Her mother was said to have lived in the San Jose area. It is taboo in my family to discuss this situation so I'm hoping maybe somone else can shed a little more light on the situation.

Hi all,

Recently I contacted the Diocese of Monterey to ask whether they have an archive akin to the one the San Francisco Arch Diocese has. (the one in Menlo Park where you can do your own searching). Their response was to send me a research request form, with some pretty hefty fees if I want lots of things researched.

Has anyone here used their research team? If so, did you have much success, or comments about the experience?

Later,

Robert

Need info about Condon Peak - San Benito / Fresno county line

Named on Santa Rita Peak (1969) 7.5’ quadrangle at 713913mE, 4021558mN at 1510 meters. This peak is shown on McCray (1891) Official Map of San Benito County, but no name is given for it. It is named on the Anderson and Pack (1915) map, but not included in their list of defined names suggesting that the name was well establish by 1915. It is thought by some locals that this peak is named for a sheepherder named (???) Condon.

Can anyone add to this story and provide more information about the Condon for which the peak is named.

See photo at http://www.picacho.org/place names/condon-peak.html.

Today, Jan. 15, 2005 I had the privilege of meeting Bea Sola in Hollister. She was born Bea Larios April 17, 1905, wife of Victor Sola, daughter of Ermilo Larios and Elva Miranda. At 100, although a little hard of hearing, she is of sharp mind. She reviewed a copy of a photograph posted at http://www.3rocks.org/ID_photos/idria%20family.jpg and immediately identified it as the Nunez family. Juan Nunez is the father and the mother is Evelda. She could only remember the name of the boy at the far right … his name is Robert. (not sure about some of spelling though.)

Can anybody help identify others in the photograph?

There are series of unidentified photos at: http://www.3rocks.org/ID_photos/
I am doing research on my husbands family. I have been told many stories. One story goes----There was a bar in Hollister in the late 1920s and 30s called "Garcias". An uncle, Manny Vyeda, who lived in Watsonville but bailed hay in Hollister ' hung out" in this bar. Another uncle whose name was ? Rodriquez went by the nick name Garcia. I wonder if this uncle could be the Garcia who owned the bar. If any of the natives of Hollister remember this bar and know any thing about it I would really appreciate hearing from you.
Betty
