POW/MIA Korean War Plumas Co. SIMMONS

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Plumas County, California as his home of record.

Soldier: WILLIAM THOMAS SIMMONS
Born: 1929
Date of loss: June 15, 1953 KIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 212 families in California that have not been located. There is one family from Plumas County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (776 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
BIRTH OR BAPTISM RECORD LOOKUP-FRANK (LAST NAME)

May 3rd, 2007 Thursday 9:45 p.m.

I am looking at the counties surrounding Butte County in case the children were born outside of Butte County.

Can somebody lookup birth & or baptism records for me please. I am looking for my grandmothers side of the family. The last name they were using on the 1880 Census for Oregon City in Butte County in CA was FRANK. On the 1st 10 or so pages of this census it says City Of Cherokee. My family is Portuguese so there is a possibility they are using the last name spelled FRANCK, FRANCISCO, FRANCISCA, FRANCA, MARTIN OR HENRIQUES. Or the last name spelling starting with FRA. HENRIQUES is the maiden name of the mother Mary. I was told that Portuguese people usually didn't use there birth names when they came to the U.S., that is why I have given a few differant spellings. The mother & fathers names are Martin & Mary both born in Portugal or The Azores.

Here are the childrens names.
Frank, Mary Born CA (Most Likely instead of MA) 1875
Frank, Frank (Yes they named one of there children Frank Frank) Born 1877
Manuel Born 1879 or 1880

There are possibly 4 other children that were born after the 1880 census. Josephine, Alice Rena & May/Mae and Martin. My grandmother Alice Rena Frank (Franck) married my grandfather Gus Foster Rowe approx. 1908.

I have been looking for my grandmothers side of the family for 14 months now with no luck. I am grasping at straws and loosing hope of ever finding them and would appreciate any help.

You can email me at tex61@bellsouth.net

THANK YOU VERY MUCH,
KIM ROWE

If one of the sources is the public library in Quincy do they have an email address and would they beable to help? Would a local newspaper help? I 'd be willing to pay a resonable fee if need be. What years do you think that they might cover?
I live in Georgia,so I'm wondering how,if possible, could I find an obituary? A new cemetery has been opened on the brow of the hill west of Crescent Mills; most of the ground is already cleared off and will be surrounded by a circular fence. Suitable drive ways will be prepared so that teams can cross the ground in any direction or drive entirely around. The site is admirably chosen; water can easily be brought upon it, the soil is deep and there is every facility for making it a lovely place.
Plumas National, Quincy – 8 June 1889 – Death of A.M. Elam. It becomes so painfully to chronicle the death of an old friend, Augustus M. Elam, which occurred very suddenly at Prattville, Tuesday afternoon. A dispatch from Meadow View says that Mr. Elam started deer hunting a few days ago. Being attacked by a ill, he returned home and felt much better.
On Tuesday morning he was taken by a severe pain in his stomach, but relief from a dose of Jamaica ginger. Just previous to his dearth he was turning clothes wringer, thus assisting his daughter in washing. She went out to hang a few pieces of clothes. Returning, she found her father lying dead on the lounge.
Mr. Elam’s sudden taking away, is a surprise to his friends. Heart trouble is supposed to have been the cause, though he was not generally known that he was subject to such troubles. His death is a sad blow to his wife and four children. For twenty-four years we have been intimately acquainted with the deceased. In all of the walks of life, he has been an honorable and respected citizen, a kind husband and father revered by is family. In their sad bereavement, the wife and children, have the sympathy of their neighbors and old acquaintances. Mrs. S.H. Pratt, mother-in-law of the deceased, arrives in Prattville today noon from Chico and the funeral will take place at 2 P.M. – Greenville Bulletin, June 5th.
Plumas National Bulletin, Quincy, California – 15 April 1926
Died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L.C. Remick, at Quincy, California, April 8, 1926, Mrs. Annie Elam Haun, Born June 22, [no year provided], in Madison, Wisconsin.
With her parents, the late Dr. Willard M. Pratt, and Sarah H. Pratt and two sisters, who later became Mrs. Emily Benner and Mrs. C/J. Sommer, the family came to California in 1859 via the Isthmus, and remained for a time at Colusa and in the vicinity of Chico. In 1876 they moved to Plumas County and founded the town of Prattville in Big Meadows, now beneath the waters of Lake Almanor.
She was first married to Augustus M. Elam in 1868, who died in 1889. Six children were born to them in the home at Prattville, of whom two sons, Capt. Arthur W. Elam and Augustus M. Elam, both of Crannell, California, and three daughters, Mrs. Elnore Remick of Oakland, and Mrs. Gertrude Remick and Mrs. Grace Remick both of Quincy, survive her. Also a sister, Mrs. C.J. Sommer of Chico and a brother, Thomas Pratt of Porterville, California.
Another sister, Mrs. Mattie Landis, wife of the late Dr. A.J. Landis of Chico, by an unusual coincidence, passed away at her home in Chico, but a few hours before.
In 1896, Mrs. Elam was married to the late Hon. David L. Haun, pioneer attorney of Plumas County, who died in 1914. Since his death and until her late illness, Mrs. Haun had made a home for her son Gus, and grandson, little Edward Elam.
The funeral, at which Rev. E.L. Fisher officiated was held from the Greenville Community Church, in the affairs of which Mrs. Haun was always greatly interested, and an ever ready and willing worker. The large attendance of friends ad relatives from far and near and the beautiful appointments of the service, bespoke the respect and love felt by all. Internment was in the Greenville Cemetery, beside the body of her late husband.
Plumas National Bulletin, Quincy, California – 21 May 1906
Mrs. M.B. Olsen Passed Away at Her Home in That Valley Last Thursday
Last week, we noted the fact that Mrs. M.B. Olsen, of Big Meadows, had on Thursday morning been found in an unconscious condition, and that Dr. Hanvey of this place had been telephoned for to render medical assistance. Later advice stated that the aged lady was found in the morning of the day mentioned, her condition being as indicated. She never regained consciousness, but gradually sank till about 11 a.m. of that day, when she peacefully passed away.
At the request of the relatives Dr. Hanvey, assisted by Dr. Rutledge performed an autopsy to determine the cause of death. This was found to have been hemorrhage of the brain due to heart troubles with which Mrs. Olsen had been afflicted.
Mrs. Mary B. Olsen had log been a resident of Plumas. She and her first husband went to Big Meadows in the early history of the county and settled on the ranch where she died. After the death of her first husband, she was married to the late Peter Olsen. Several years ago, he also died, leaving her a widow for the second time. Assisted by her sons, she managed the ranch successfully.
Mrs. Olsen was a quiet and retiring lady, but she possessed good business capacity, and leaves a goodly estate to her sons. She was a good neighbor and friend, and ever devoted to the welfare and comfort of her children, five of whom are left to mourn her loss. They are Horace P. and Frank L. Bailey, and George W., Nelson A. and Edgar A. Olsen. Besides these there are several grandchildren. In their bereavement these have the sympathy of many friends both in Plumas and Butte counties.
He started with 527 head of cattle and arrived with 487. On the west branch of the Humboldt, relieved a family consisting of Mr. HERMAN and child, and Mr.&Mrs. NELSON, from an attack of hostile Indians. The Indians commenced the attack about 10 o’clock at night, drove them from their wagon in their night clothing, killed the oxen and took or destroyed all the family possessed. They were brought through by Mr. CRAWTHAN to Quincy in Plumas county. The Indians on the north of the Humboldt are very hostile. The immigration this year will be larger than any previous year since 1853.
ANDREW L. HALL

Does anyone know anything about Andrew L. Hall that was born about 1857 in Texas? He was on the the 1900 Plumas Co., CA census.

ANDREW L HALL - TX - born October 1856
RHODA - CA - November 1875
WILLIAM M - CA - January 1897
GEORGE L - CA - February 1898

I believe that this is Rhoda Belle Day that later married George Harrison Leonard Magill. I have family papers that say that William and George were the sons of George Magill but after finding this information on the this census I am wondering if the boys were indeed the sons of Andrew L. Hall.

Rhoda Belle Day was my grandmother who later married Noah Peters in Jamacha Valley, San Diego Co., CA. Rhoda was the daughter of Peter and Charity Stark Day. Peter Day died in 1911 in Quincy and on his obit it says one of his daughters was Rhoda Hall. My grandmother is a mystery and how she ended up down in the San Diego, CA area with her two sons. I would really like to know if the two boys were Magill's or actually Hall's.

Thanks for any help...
Kay Butcher
kayc@cox.net

In researching my Grandfather PHILIP I. PATTAN (1898-1968) and have hit a road block trying to trace his Paternal line. I know his father immigrated from Switzterland or Italy at a young man. His name was CHERBINO PATTANNI (later changed to PATTAN). He married MARY LAUFMAN, daughter of CYRUS LAUFMAN of Indian Township. I know he remained in Plumas County and is probably buried there. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I lost all contact with my father's side of the family. According to the SSDI, my grandfather, Hanson Earl Mathews died 1982 and per the Quincy Cemetary records he is buried there along with two brothers, Fritz and Roy, I believe.

Hanson was first married to Ann Sharkey whose mother's maiden name was McKenzie. Ann and Hanson divorced while they lived in Keddie. Hanson worked for the RR for 37 years. Hanson remarried a woman named Amanda Hummel. (attempting to locate her as well) Ann remarried a person named Bob, no last name known and I don't know how to locate her. This Bob also lived in Keddie, near them. I met him one time about 35 years ago.

I think I found a sister of Ann's named Evelyn R. Cogle but she has passed on and was living in Anderson (Shasta Co.). I also believe she had another sister named Lola.

I keep coming upon dead ends and hope that someone can help me locate either living relatives or knowledge of death.

My father's name was also Hanson Earl Mathews.

Thank you, any and all communications would be welcomed and appreciated.
