My Werry people are my mother's family. They came to the U.S. in 1870's. There were several sons and daughters of one couple from St. Austell, Cornwall. They came with their own wives/husbands and children. They came into New York, went to Maryland, Ohio, Colorado, Nevada and finally settled in Idaho. They hard rock mined all the way across the U.S. which took several years. In Idaho they realized that sheep raising was less dangerous and more profitable. Thus, they changed occupations.

According to the Nevada County Death Index, Dorothy Joan Stover died Oct. 17, 1990.

Pg. 1 of our local newspaper, The Union, Thursday Oct. 18, 1990, shows an article regarding the death of this local woman in a car crash. No obituary followed up to Oct. 24, 1990.

Apparently, the family may not have submitted an obituary.

You might try contacting:

Nevada Cemetery District
10523 Willow Valley Road
Nevada City, CA 95959
(530) 265-3461

or

Hooper and Weaver Mortuary
459 Hollow Way
Nevada City, CA 95959
(530) 265-2429

Aside from that, if you are ever in Nevada County, you could stop by the Doris Foley Library for Historical Research. Much information is available there. Such as back issues of the local papers on microfilm which might state in an obituary where someone was interred. They also have some books which give names of persons buried in some cemeteries.) Due to the lax economy they are currently (Sept. 9, 2009) only open on Friday 10am - 4pm (closed for lunch 12pm - 12:30pm)

You might also try an online search.

Good luck to you.

Searching for info on family, have looked and inquired for obituaries on these ladies: Frances Rosemond, dob: 1921,died in Grass Valley in 1995, her daughter, Berrilla Frances Rosemond, dob: 1953, died in 1974, in same area, and Frances' mother, Berrilla A. Muffett LeClair. Need info desperately as to what happened with this family. Someone must know what became of grandmother, Berrilla, whom was also called Fay,born in Kentucky, possible birth year 1902. She married in Oklahoma and apparently stayed in Oklahoma while rest of family located in Arizona in or around 1930. Would greatly appreciate info to settle mystery of family as Frances LeClair Rosemond died without her family even knowing her or of her child, Berrilla Frances Rosemond, whom was obviously named after her maternal grandmother. Frances' family on her maternal side never knew what happened to Berrilla Muffett after 1935 when she lost contact with them.

How would one go about determining which cemetery a person might be buried in Nevada County? I have several relatives which are buried in Nevada county, which lived there in the late 1800's, died elsewhere, but were according to family history returned to and buried in Nevada county. The family lived near the You Bet mine for some time, the family name is Barker, William and Luetisha, parents, and son Charles Oscar Barker, who died around 1954. Any assistance or guideance would be greatly appreciated.

I have quite a bit of info on my great great grandfather, Jacob Kleopfer. He was born in 1824 in Germany and immigrated to America in 1843. He married in St. Louis in 1846 and went to California in 1853 before returning to Indiana in 1859 where he finished raising his family. Many descendants have been identified and documented.

Robert Kleopfer

I am seeking any information on the family line of Floyd Wells (b. aprx 1908, d.2001,California). He was married to Audrey Florence Richards (b. 20 Apr 1913, possibly in Michigan; d. 10 May 1986,California) I know that he worked as a welder for a car manufacturer in Detroit, before moving to Nevada City California where he opened a machine shop and worked for the remainder of his life. They had 5 children (Dick, David, Judy, Nancy, & Linda). Any help would be appreciated.
Dean
DeanRising@charter.net

Thank you very much for your information. I am doing research for a possible book on Old St. Patrick's Cemetery in Grass Valley where Honora and J. P Adams daughter, Seraphina is interred. As such, it seems as if I almost live at the Doris Foley Library.

Seraphina's mother, Honora, purchased the "New York Hotel Lot" upon which the New York Hotel recently stood from Gerhard Schmittburg on May 27, 1858 for $1,000. On June 30, 1860 she purchased a parcel of land adjoining this property from Wymore & Baker. She owned The New York Hotel as her separate property during her lifetime, until her death in San Francisco on Feb. 15, 1869.

When at the Foley Library you can find J.P. Adams listed as proprietor of New York Hotel (1861 Directory) in the Business Card Index.

I found the deed information through Kitt's Index at Foley as well, it is listed on microfilm "Deeds" Book 3 beginning on bottom of pg. 286 (Schmittburg to Adams); and Book 6 beginning middle of pg 342 (Wymore/Baker to Adams).

Further Source: Original Assessment Roll Nevada County, 1866 pg. 125 (Assessor book at Foley Library)
Nevada ~ Adams, J. P. agent of Honora Adams House + Lot on North Side of Broad St. adj. Lot of Monroe known as New York Hotel including funiture 1800. Total Value of Taxable Property 1800. Total amount State and County Tax 35.10 when paid area is blank.

Am sure that the Adams name should appear in the other Assessor books for the years they owned this property as well, but don't feel I need to pull each and everyone of them for the research I am doing.

Thank you again, and I'm sure the information contained here will be useful to you for your book on Hotels. As far as I can tell, nobody else has come across the information that this Hotel was owned by a woman back in the day when that was very unusual.

Donna

I have a little information on the Adams family as I am researching material for a book on hotels in Nevada County.
At a public auction in front of the courthouse steps on Aug. 11, 1869 John C. Dewel (lawyer) was the highest bidder at $867.00 and he assigned the same on July 20, 2870 to P.L. Ryan, of Grass Valley. The sale was the result from a Judgement between John Henninger? and J.P. Adams and the Estate of Hanna Adams. Neither of those parties bid on the property to get it back therefore it went to the highest bidder.
I had not yet found a deed where Adams was the buyer of the New York Hotel. In 1857 Tracy Stroud sold the hotel to George Lippert.
Deed books prior to 1856 were destroyed in the 1856 fire.
The town of Nevada City was in the first two decades known by only "Nevada" and this is the town in Nevada County not the State of Nevada that later took the name for what was before a part of the Utah Territory.

Thank you so much for all of this research! I suspected she had died in Nevada County and now I even have a date of death.

The name spelling difference has occurred all along. My mother and aunt tried to find descendents of Katrine in the 1970's and they were looking for Ditlevsens. They never had any success but the internet made it so easy to find the family.

I am in Southern California and I'm familiar with Truckee and the general area. One of these days I will get back up there and go visit what remains of Boca. It is interesting that it took 16 years before probate.

Thank you again for everything!

Barbara

As I suspected, not much to be had in the area of Boca Research in Nevada County. The search results for your great aunt, Katherine Thomsen Ditlevson were as follows:

Nevada County death index ... not found

Obituary index ... not found

Hooper & Weaver Mortuary index ... not found

Index to Cemetery Cards ... not found

Nevada Co. Vol 2 Cemeteries by C. James & Melinda Herzog Landrith (includes Boca pg. 30) ... not found (this book has a copyright of 1987 and only lists seven names under the heading Boca Cemetery so I am sure many are unaccounted for, probably may not be in existance anymore just like the town itself).

Nevada County Probate Case Index Vol. 1 FOUND

Ditlevsen, Kate Admin/Guard/Executor: Peter Ditlevsen Case #: 2789

The microfilm containing this record is on file at the Doris Foley Library for Historical Research in Nevada City, CA.

Within the Petition for Letters of Administration, the Petitioner was Peter Ditlevsen. The date of death of Kate Ditlevsen was on or about 4 July 1905 in the County of Nevada, State of California. It further states that at the time of her death she was a resident of Nevada County. She left an estate in the County of Fresno, State of CA.

The names, ages, and residences of the next of kin were:

Peter Ditlevsen 50 Fort Baker, Marin Co., Cal.

Minnie Pozesanac 28 Lolleta, Humboldt Co., Cal.

Albert P. Ditlevson 24 934 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, Mass.

Harold Ditlevson 21 Fort Baker, Cal.

The petitioner was stated to have been the surviving husband.

This petition was Dated: Sausalito, Cal. August 14, 1822 and is signed by Peter Ditlevson (with an "o" so why it appears his name is misspelled throughout is a mystery)

Within the Order Appointing Administrator it is stated she died at Truckee, Nevada Co., Cal.

I tried to find her death notice/obituary in The Truckee Republican, looking up to July 22, 1905, and found nothing.

I tried also to find her in The Morning Union, again nothing.

Truckee is in East Nevada County and even to this day, not much of what occurs there appears in the paper of the Grass Valley/Nevada City area (The Union). Boca was about 5 miles downstream from Truckee. Perhaps you could acquire some information about the cemeteries in Truckee by using the contact link on the Truckee Chamber of Commerce website:

http://www.truckee.com/

Sorry, that I couldn't find more, but having an actual date now, 4 July 1905, may help. You might try a posting in Fresno County as well for a possible obit listing. If they really did join the Mormon Church, the LDS should have records on the family as well.

Hope this helps.

Barbara,

Thank you ever so much for your diligent research, and I do agree with you that the John P. family you found on the 1880 census is one and the same as the family I've been researching. The children all being born in Nevada may actually have been an error as I believe they were born in Nevada City, California, however, the town in which they resided was originally called Nevada (the City being tagged on to the name after the State of Nevada entered the union to avoid confusion between the two) which may have led to this mistake. The mother, Honora, died in San Francisco in 1869, so that ties the family to that locale as well.

I do not have any other names of children of J.P. and Honora but do have information that another boy was born to the family on November 13, 1867. Something must have happened to him, as none of the children present on the 1880 census you found are the right age (12). Adding this son to the 4 children you revealed leaves one additional child (of the six that survived Honora) in limbo, this child may have been old enough to marry or could possibly have died prior to 1880.

The next time I get to the research library I'll take a look-see into your poser regarding your Great Aunt Katrine Thomsen Ditlevson who died in Boca, CA. Information may be somewhat limited due to location, but may be able to come up with something.

Thanks again, and good luck in your search.

Donna

I suspect that my great aunt, Katrine Thomsen Ditlevson, died in Nevada County and is buried there and I would like to find out if anyone knows anything about her.

She was born in Vejen, Denmark 19 Aug. 1872 and came to the United States with her then fiance,Peter Hans Ditlevson in 1890. Family legend says they joined the Morman church.

In 1900 census she, her husband and children Minnie b.1894, Axel b. 1898, and Harold b. 1901. were in Fresno CA.

I have a copy of a letter she wrote to my grandfather in June 1903 from Boca, Nevada County. In the letter she says they will be going to Fresno in October (1903). I know she died within a year or two of writing that letter.

I have found her husband (by 1910 he was remarried and a lighthousekeeper on the Central Coast) and children in many records through the years but I haven't been able to find where and when Katrine died. Is there any way to find out if she is buried in Boca or elsewhere in Nevada County? The online listings I have found only give a few names.

I don't have any connection but just enjoy searching.

I found a John P. Adams age 65 in San Francisco in the 1880 census. Roll:T9_77 Enumeration district 165: Image 0510. He was born in France and is a Bootblack. He is widowed and with him are his children:
John 25 steward
William 16 boot (or boat) maker
Agnes 20 works in shirt factory
Minnie 19 keeping house

The ages of John and Agnes match with J.P and A. in the 1860 census. The children are all listed as born in Nevada and both parents are listed as born in France but who knows how accurate that is.

I have not found this family in the 1870 census.

I found a William P. Adams in the 1900 census in Portland OR, Multnomah Ward 5 Dist. 50. He was born Feb 1865 in CA with father born in France and mother in Ireland (doesn't seem to be a comman occurance).
He is with his wife Amelia and daughter Helen b Sept 1896. They were living with her parents(listed as grandparents but unlikely) Henry and Christina Fleckenstein.

In 1910 the family was still in Portland with two daughters Helen13 and Marjorie 7 as well as sister Agatha Adams (A.?) who was a seamstress. The Fleckensteins lived next door.

In 1920 the family was still in Portland with Helen C. 23 and Marjorie G. 17 and Amelia's mother Christina Fleckenstein 72 a widow.

That's as far as I have gotten. No proof that the Oregon family is connected to J.P and Honora but I'm willing to bet that John P. in the 1880 census is the right one.

Do you know the names of other children who survived Honora beside J.P. and A.?

Barbara

Oliver,

We had a lovely day here in Grass Valley, so I went out and found your father, Oliver Edward Sharrai's grave.

In the long-shot picture, the entrance arch to New St. Patricks cemetery in Grass Valley, CA., can be seen just to the left of the Pine tree at upper left of photo. Your father's grave is a little ways to the right and in line with this same tree as can be evidenced by the needles and cones around his stone.

As he is not here, I will tip my hat to you for having a loved one who served our country in time of war.

Have a wonderful day!

APPLETON, Margaret, wife of Edwin E. 1860s ~ Appleton; Kennedy; Irving; Hurley; Rowe; Snyder; Mullins; Gummoe; Skibinski; Beards

Seeking any information on Margaret Appleton, wife of Edwin E. Appleton of Nevada County.

Would anyone happen to know her date of death, or any other information about her?

So far, my research shows she may have previously been Margaret Kennedy and that she married E. E. Appleton on May 1, 1867 in Nevada County. She may have died sometime prior to May 22, 1870 as I have found Edwin E. being married to Ann Irving on that date.

Also have found the following:

E. E. Appleton who was a resident of Washington and was listed as in the refinery business in 1879.

The obituary of E. E. Appleton, b. England 1831, ex-Chief of the Grass Valley Fire Dept., member of AOUW. He died in Grass Valley 18 Apr. 1894, leaving a wife 3 girls and a boy.

The obituary of Ann Appleton, native of New York who came to California when an infant in 1852, died at 78 yrs. in Sacramento June 3, 1931. She was a charter member of Olympic Temple, No. 10, Pythian Sisters of Grass Valley; Sacramento Pocahontas and Rebekahs. Although she had lived in Sacramento many years prior to her death, she was considered an old time resident of this community. She is stated in this obit to have been the widow of the late Edward Appleton. Surviving her were: three daughters, Mrs. Margaret Hurley, Mrs. Edith Rowe and Mrs. Etta Snyder of Sacramento; one son, Edward Appleton of Sacramento and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Sarah Mullins, Grass Valley; Mrs. Elizabeth Gummoe, Oakland; Mrs. Dottie Skibinski, Oakland; Mrs. Kate Beardsely, Spokane, Washington; Robert Irving, Crane, Oregon, and John Irving, Sacramento. It was said that her remains were to be brought to Grass Valley for burial in the City Cemetery.

Would anyone happen to know if E. E.; Edwin; and Edward were as I suspect the same individual and/or have any more information pertaining to this family?

My father was married 4 times . I'm not sure when he was married to any ladies other than my mother . I thought that he was married last to Nannette M. Rossette . But I'm not real sure . I will get in touch with the library about the obituaries . Thank you . I found a post on Ancestry.com that stated that my father was buried in St. Patricks , but I don't know . He may very well have been buried with Mrs. Violet Sharrai ????? Thanks so much for your time spent .
Ollie Sharrai

His wife's obituary stated she was cremated and interred in the family plot at Old Elm Ridge Cemetery, Grass Valley. I found that a little strange since I thought that they had discontinued burying anyone there, but perhaps because she was cremated, there was room in the family plot. Perhaps I was wrong and they still were doing burials there.

The Doris Foley Library for Historical Research in Nevada City, CA. could look up and send you copies of both obituaries. I believe their charge is $3.00 per record for this service, if you provide names and dates of death.

Oliver Sharrai died Oct. 31, 1978 and his obituary was in The Union on page 2 the same day.

His wife, Violet Sharrai died Sept. 13, 1976. Her obituaries appeared in The Union Sept. 14, 1976 pg. 2 and Sept. 16, 1976 pg. 2. The later obituary is longer and has more info. than the first.

Doris Foley Library
211 North Pine Street
Nevada City, CA 95959
(530)265-4606

The library is open Mon.
There is a real possibility that he was buried in the same cemetery that his wife is . I just found a brief statement somewheres online that stated that he was in St. Patricks . I'm not even sure where I read it . Is there any possibility of getting a picture of his obituary ? What cemetery is his wife buried in ? I'm sorry that this is more complex than what I thought it was going to be . I sure do appreciate the time you have spent doing this for me and my family .

Perhaps you could obtain information from the surviving family members who were listed.

Or maybe Hooper & Weaver Mortuary might have records of who paid for the services or the names of more family members. I know the obituary listed Bergemann and Sons, but they have been out of business here for quite some time. Hooper & Weaver Mortuary is now located in the building which originally housed Bergemann and Sons, and therefore may have the records.

Hooper & Weaver
Mortuary & Crematory
459 Hollow Way
Nevada City, CA 95959
(530)265-2429

Hope this helps

I have been through approximately 3/4 of St. Patrick's Cemetery in Grass Valley, and do not recall seeing surname, Sharrai. Perhaps when the weather gets better, I'll get around to the remaining 1/4 and come up with something for you. Would you perhaps have an actual date of death in 1978, it may help narrow the search?
