George Frederick Cropp - Oct. 23, 1919 to Nov. 4, 2003.

Mr. Cropp was the loving husband of Louise Cropp for 61 years. Mr. Cropp is survived by his wife, their five daughters, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Susan and John Bernardi and their children, Tony Bernardi and Victoria Bernardi; Linda and Kenneth Martin and their children, Kiellie Reichert and Kenneth Martin; Nani and Randy Greenwell and her children Tanya Arnberger and Terry Linnell, and great-granddaughter Taelor and great-grandson Macin; Nancy and Bill Bogdanoff and their children, William Bogdanoff and Nicole Bogdanoff; and Katherine Calkins and her children, Sarah Calkins and Shane Calkins.

Mr. Cropp was born Oct. 23, 1919 on the Koloa Plantation, Koloa, Territory of Hawaii, where his father was manager. He lived in Manoa, Hawaii and attended Punahou School, moving to the main land in 1937. Mr. Cropp graduated from Burlingame High, attended University of California, Davis. After school, he married Louise Saunders of Burlingame. They moved to Calistoga to manage his parents' Ululani Ranch in Knights Valley, where they raised prunes, grapes, sheep, cattle and hay. After selling the ranch in 1950, he was owner and operator of Cropp's Hardware in Calistoga and later was a partner in Croma Hardware in St. Helena.

In 1977, Mr. and Mrs. Cropp retired to their ranch in Wells, Nev. Mr. Cropp returned to Calistoga in 1978 to manage the Napa County Fair for six years. In 1987, they retired in Lake County. Mr. Cropp was a member and past president of the Calistoga Rotary Club and later the St. Helena Rotary; on the Board of Directors and past president of the Napa County Fair; was appointed an advisory director to the California Fairs; was appointed by Governor Ronald Reagan as Budget Review Officer for the California Fairs and served as Director of the Republican Central Committee; was a member of the Lakeport Yacht Club and belonged to the Masonic Lodge of the Napa Valley #93.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, at Chapel of the Lakes, 1625 High St. Lakeport.

Lora's parent's are Barney Johnson Robinson & Margaret Emily White. The correct spelling of the surname is "ROBISON" and it has been misspelled several times in the census.

Obit or info for Donald Davis, died July 1981, Napa or Solano?

Does anyone have a Donald Davis in their research, born in NY 1916, died either Napa or Solano Counties, 22 July 1981, or can someone look for an obit for me? The Social Security Death Index says Vallego was his last place of residence, but the California Death Index says he died in Napa. I've researched Donald's ancestors in the Ulster County, NY area and would love to find living descendants.

Mary was married to John W. Davis who died in 1857. They lived in Napa, California and had one child, (Elias A Davis born 1856 d 1914 in Brady, TX). The 1860 Census shows Mary living in the home of Robert Woods in Yount, Napa Co., CA. Robert's age is shown as either 38 or 58, so he is either Mary's brother or father. Both Mary and Robert were born in Ohio.

Where and when did Mary and John Davis marry? Did Mary A. Woods remarry after death of John W. Davis? If so, who and when? Where in Ohio was she born and who were her parents?
Where are John W. Davis and Mary Angelena Woods buried.

Abstracted from Bulletin of the California Central Coast Genealogical Society, Vol. 10, pg, 73, "Stereopticon" column, from "San Luis Obispo Tribune" issue 4 March 1876: Written by brother George Francis, Ed. of the Napa "Register": William Francis died at this residence in San Bernardino, California, Mon., Feb. 21 of consumption in his 43rd year. Born Troy, Oakland Co., Michigan, 27 July 1833. Came to California 1850 to place now owned by John Howell near St. Helena. In that place 11 yrs. then to Idaho; family remained in St. Helena. Later settled in Mendocino Co., Anderson Valley then to San Luis Obispo. Engaged in livery business. In 1858 in St. Helena, he married Mrs. Dicie Ann Holloway, daughter of William Rector, a pioneer of 1846, after whom Rector was named and who is now living near San Luis Obispo. 3 children born; 2 living. Long Time Resident of Napa, Lake Counties Dies

JOHN STEVEN PINER, for 20 years a resident of Napa, passed away yesterday morning at 11:30 oclock at 132-B Alabama
Street, Vallejo, where he had been ill for some time.

Deceased was a native of Kelseyville, Calif., and was 68 years of age at the time of his death. He was well known in
Napa as well as in Lake County, where he spent his younger years.

He is survived by a widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Piner, and a son, Charles B. Piner of Napa, and a daughter, Mrs. Edna May BUTLER of Vallejo, and several grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 oclock from the Treadway parlors. Interment will take place at
Tulocay cemetery.

Train Accident in Napa 1910 - 1913?

I am hoping to find a newspaper article in order to find the day that brought our family to Napa. We believe they came between 1911 - 1913. Here is what a family book story said: "... at the Vallejo wharf, he boarded the electric car. He had enough money to come as far as Napa, California. It was on this train that he was riding that was involved with another train in a head on collision. Many people were killed and injured. The newspapers of the day were filled with stories about the tragedy." Is there anyone in Napa who is a bit of a train buff, or perhaps a general historian who might recall something in that timeframe, or have access to some type of local newspaper index to pinpoint the newspaper coverage of that? Note that the birthplace for William Loskutoff is REST (OTHER) Possibly to mean Russia. His siblings before and after were born in San Francisco. It is not believed that the family went back to Russia during the time he would have been born. Therefore, more than likely, he was also born in SF, CA

Another thought is that a large contingent of Molokans moved back to Russia during this time and it is possible William's family was part off this group. The families moved back to America after they found out that living in Russia was more difficult.

If there is someone that can shed light on this issue, please let me know.

I am trying to trace one of my great-grandmothers brothers. He moved around alot. The last census record I find of him is in 1900, living in Oklahoma. In one of his father's obits(1906) he is listed in Los Angeles; in another obit on his father, he is listed as living in San Francisco. In his mother's obit (1920), he is listed as living in Fortuna, CA. The last mention I can find of him is in a brother's obit (1927), where he is listed as living in Knoxville, CA. I live in Mendocino County and am a native Californian and I had to look up Knoxville, CA to find out where it is, I had never heard of it. It is along the Knoxville-Berryessa Road, between Lake County and Napa County but, I guess, was technically in Napa County. It doesn't seem like this town is there anymore. I'm going to visit Napa and St. Helena soon to do some research and I'm hoping someone can point me to the best places to find what I'm looking for.

Here is what I already know/have about this branch of the family:

Their census info for 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930
Some of their addresses from the census records
Some dates of death
Some obituaries

I've pretty much exhausted what I can find online. Here is what I'd like to find to fill in the blanks:

City directories for Napa and St. Helena

Land records -- these folks had a winery in St. Helena in the 1870's and 1880's. I'd like to find out where the property was (I know vaguely) and when they bought and sold it

Cemetery records -- ggg-grandpa's obituary says he was buried in the "Catholic cemetery." I'm not sure where some of the others are buried. None of them show up in the cemetery transcriptions I've found online.

Old maps of St. Helena -- the census records and other sources say the family lived on Ward Avenue in St. Helena, which doesn't exist anymore, apparently. Some streets before and after it in the census pages are Hudson, Stockton, and Allyn, which are still there.

St. Helena newspapers on microfilm from 1870 on, preferrably with a reader that will print. :)

I'd be grateful for any help anyone can give me on where to find some of these things. I know there are libraries and gen. societies in the area, but don't know who has what. Time always flies when you're doing gen. research, so I'd like to hit the right places. :)

I remember visiting the Hogan ranch a few miles north of Napa on the Silverado Trail in 1956 with my parents. Ed Hogan, in his 90s, was the only one left. They are the grandparents of Robert Michael Garrett.

Their daughter = Carolyn (was a school teacher in early 1990's); she was single when I met her.

My grandmother was born in Napa, CA abt 1886 Alice Myrtle Blake, her birth certificate is not in the Records of Napa (several folks have looked) but it was recorded in the Napa newspaper (I have a copy of it) her parents George R Blake and Anna Blake (both born in Wisconsin) also 2 other children that died. We don't know when they came to Napa. Also, Anna Blake's mother died in Napa. I would like to have the obitary of Anna Blake's mother. I noticed it was listed in the Napa library but cannot get a copy of it. I believe it was before 1900 and after 1886. Any other information about the Blake family would be appreciated. Searching for relatives of the Herrod brothers who moved from Arkansas to California and were living in the counties of Contra Costo, Napa, and Sonoma. Their names were: James L. Herrod (born November 7,1888 and died January 16, 1933?); Fred Herrod (born November 17,1902 and died June 4,1988) married Claudia Dellarosa; Samuel "Sam" Wallin Herrod (born December 31,1905 and died March 30,1992) married Anne Minnis Isler; and Lucius Brown Herrod (born November 19,1908 and died September 4,1989) married Albena Julia Gregorich. Need to know where they are buried and the names of their children and where they lived.

Searching for someone to lookup obituaries for Fred Herrod (died June 4,1988) and his wife Claudia Herrod (died July 1,2000). Both were residents of St. Helena, Napa County, CA at time of death. Need to know where they are buried and the names of their children and parents and where they lived. He was born November 17,1902 in Arkansas and she was born May 18,1905.

I'm doing research on my family from Port Washington, NY.

My father’s oldest brother had a falling out my grandfather in the late 1920’s and changed his name to Holbrook Hultz ( his middle name and mother’s maiden name ) . I’ve also found that he also used the name Mark Hultz. He moved to Texas and died in California. If this sounds familiar please contact me.

Does any one have a way to get the list of students who went to school at Healsburg College in the early 1900-1905, looking for my grandmother's school. She supposedly went to school there between 1900 and 1905. alice Myrtle Blake.

I am trying to determine if the Joseph R. Gruber in the 1920 census is my ancestor. I haven't been able to find them in the 1930 census, so am thinking they died 1920-1930. Sorry I don't have it narrowed down more than that.

The 1920 census of Napa Township, Napa County, California listed:

Gruber, Joseph R., Head, renting a home on Clark St., age 63, immigrated 1880, naturalized 1890, born in Germany, parents born in Austria, employed as a Cutler in a Glove Factory.

Gruber, Adelia F., Wife, age 60, immigrated 1901, she and parents born in Austria

In the 1910 census I have them listed in the 4th Township, Glenn County, California as:

Gruber, Joseph, Head, age 56, second marriage, married 6 years, he and parents born in Austria, immigrated in 1867, employed as a gardener on a farm.

Gruber, Adela, Wife, age 50, second marriage, married 6 years.

I am almost certain this is my ancestor in the 1910 census. There a some discrepancies in the 1920 census, but also enough hits to take them into consideration.

If anyone is able to look-up these obituaries, I would appreciate the help.
