Hi Folks
I’m attempting to pull together any additional information I can around my following 3x Great Uncle.

Joseph GYTE b 14th Feb 1830 Chelmorton emigrated to the US in 1856 from Chelmorton Derbyshire England ..he was married to Maria GOODWIN also from England.

They initially settled in Dane County Wisconsin but soon found the lure of California too much and moved on to Napa Valley CA.

From letters and Josephs obituary in the Napa daily Register what I do know is that Joseph and Maria had 3 children :- Esther b1861 Wisconsin, William b1870 California & Emma who married Mr Lafayette Smith.

Emma had 2 children Ruby L Smith and Chester L Smith

Ruby married a Mr GOODWIN and had a son Earl GOODWIN b Corcoran CA

Chester married and had a Daughter Lorraine Smith b Los Angeles.

Joseph died in 1916 , Maria 2 years earlier , they lived at Madrona Terrace Napa at the time of his death and had done for the 40 years previous.

Emma Lafayette Smith lived on Calistoga Avenue Napa in 1916

Any further information and anyone with links to this family please let me know….I have done some extensive research on the GYTE family in the UK

I will be visiting San Francisco for 4 days in September on my way to visit a friend up in Portland ….any ideas on places to see connected with the family or just good places to visit would be much appreciated.

The Goodwins in Corcoran were cousins. Maria Goodwin Gyte was the sister to my Sarah Elizabeth Goodwin Arland. My mother remembers Goodwins living nearby in Corcoran when she was a child. (She turned 93 May 9, 2009.) She was sure they were cousins, but couldn't remember their names.

Emma Letitia Gyte was the daughter of Joseph Gyte, and Maria Goodwin. They were both born in Derbyshire, England. I have a photo of Emma as a young girl.

Great to hear from you ... you say you are descended from Sarah Elizabeth GOODWIN .. I believe her to be the daughter of John GOODWIN and Mary MORTIN ... I don't know when they went to the states but I suspect it was before 1851 .

If you wish to share data and info I have quite a bit of additional GYTE info and related items through other contacts in the US.

A scan of my Great Uncle Josephs eldest Emma would be fantastic ...

I am looking for the parents of John Goodwin b. 1805 Derbyshire. Married Mary Mortin in Hartington in 1825. They immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Wisconsin.

I've searched my BVRI and a few other web sites which might have helped but I'm guessing you have already done that extensively .

What else do you know about John ...was he really born in 1805 ? ... how old was he when he died ?

I suspect Mary's father may well have been Henry MORTIN ...but thats a guess.

I'll keep looking and get back if I see anything.

Is it possible to scan a copy of the photo of Emma you mentioned previously ?
