New to Merced Co research. Unable to find obits online and am looking for suggestions.

Albert James STENZIG, b. 8 Jul 1866, CA, d. 23 Aug 1944, Merced Co, CA; Merced Co Deaths, book 14, page 437. Believe his parents were Henry (b. 1825, Germany) and Thankful Elizabeth (b. 1842, TN)

Would appreciate any suggestions or help in finding any available details on his ancestry as listed on death records (I have all of his census data). Albert was likely the stepson of man I am tracking - Charles Marvin Wright (1833/VT-1903/Newman, Stanislaus Co, CA).
Thanks - D Wright

My great grandmother was born in 1892 in Arkansas. I knew her as Grandma Honey. I believe her birth name was Mary E King. She died in June 1977.

Her daughter was Velma Irene Honey who married Reuben Charles Jones. After he died, she married Robert Keane. She died in 1992. I know Velma had a sister named Elsie and one possibly named Mamie.

Velma had five children: Wayne, Vita, Clinton, Patricia and Doris.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. RMAMARTINEZ@YAHOO.COM

Hi,
I am looking for information on the town Grub Gulch, Merced county. I found my dad's birth anouncement in the Modesto Evening news dated may 17th 1922 which stated he was born in his home in Grub Gulch. What I have found is that the town burned down in 1920 and I want to find out if there were any homes left in the area.

Thomas Franklin Little

I am researching Thomas Franklin Little. I don't know very much about this individual except that he was born approx January of 1901 or 1903 (maybe in Nebraska or Missouri) and he passed away August 5, 1963 in California. I looked in the California Death records and found one that had passed away in Merced County. He was married to Cora Isabel Mizner December 16, 1923. She passed away in 1955.

Is it possible to look up info on a Merced Co. death record?

As funds are tight, and this is not my actual line, I'd rather not have to order a death record, but would very much value the information found on it, as it might help to contradict some mis-information out there naming my ancestor as the father of some children I am quite sure are not his. Is it possible to just look at the record and tell me if there is any information on the parents of the deceased? I would so much appreciate it! Melinda York, d. Jul 2, 1956 in Merced Co. Thank you!!

This is a longshot but, I'm hopeing someone has an Alma in their family tree. She was born in CA (according to 1930 census), as were both her parents. She married J. Goebel Collins abt. 1927 & they were living in Riverside on Johnson Ave. in 1930. I'm 'almost' positive they had no children. They either divorced or she passed away (not on death index) between 1930-1936. Goebel married 2nd time March 1937.
There is no record of marriage in Merced, Sonoma, or Stanislaus counties.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
thanks, Bonnie

PRIETO, CONTRERAS, QUARRELL, TARAZON

I am trying to assist one of my best friends to help find some answers to his family. I have very little to go on except that his Grandfather's name was Francisco Prieto. He was married twice. His first wife was killed by Indians (from New Mexico). Later Francisco made a raid into New Mexico to avenge his wife's death and brought back an Indian maiden. From this union, Lucero Ramon Prieto was born Chihuahua Mexico on 11 Apr 1907. Francisco reportedly owned a large parcelc of land in Mexico during the time of civil unrest, so he fled to El Paso Texas, taking his family with him. His son Lucero Ramon Prieto moved to the Deming New Mexico area where he wed Marianna Contreras (I have three separate legal paperwork with her surname spelled as Contreras, Contrerez, Contreres). Marianna was born 14 May 1910. She and Ramon married 19 Sep 1927 and had three children (Ramiro [b. 17 Apr 1932], Gloria, and Sarah). Ramon left Marianna and the three children in Lake Valley, New Mexico. He later learned Marianna, Gloria, and Sarah died of either malnutrition and/or Tubercerlosis. Marianna died at age 21 years old. Ramon Prieto later remarried 06 Oct 1933 in Deming Luna County NM to Mary Jane Quarrell b.24 Dec 1913 in Tyrone NM. Ramon and Mary Jane had three children, Carmen Gloria b. 17 Dec 1943, Lawrence, and Joseph Ramon. Ramon and Mary Jane went to Lake Valley NM and embraced Ramiro Prieto into their family. Both Ramon d. June 1973 and Mary Jane d. 08 Jun 1996 in Planada, Merced, California. Any help would be greatly appreciated. There is little information that my friend Ramiro can provide. I told him I would attempt to help begin to understand some history on his family. I do not speak Spanish, so translation is required, if possible. Thank you in advance. Jack Murphy

However, found a listing at Falk (Falk's Claim, by jon humboldt gates) just outside Eureka, Humboldt co., which is:
Bertha Blow
I will look for a date of death for her. Found in 1860 census a list for Alfred Blow at Arrapahoe co., Kansas from a book listing people who came from Tenn., South Carolina, Virgina.
I am working from the LDS, Family History Center here in Ukiah. I hope what I found may help us with Martha's husband's family in California. JoAnn

A Thelma Fagundes (nee SHOOK) born 13 December 1921 in Bronson, Branch County, Michigan died 6 June 2007 in Merced, having lived toward the end of her life in Atwater. . Her parents were Edwin Shook and Julia Tisdel. She had been a music teacher in Michigan, Colorado, and California. Her mother apparently died in or near Atwater. Her late husband was Frank Fagundes, identified in her obituary in the Coldwater (Michigan) Daily Reporter as a "prominent almond grower" -- but the California Death Index indicates that multiple persons now deceased named Frank Fagundes.

Which Frank Fagundes was he?

He was born of German parents in NYC in 1864. Or, Steven (Stephen) Worch, first noted in the 1910 census, living as a nephew in the household of Ernest and Anna Scharnhorst, again in the Canal Precinct. Steven is 12 at the time. He registers for the WWI draft in Portland OR, and may have moved back to NYC by 1930.

Mrs. Georgia Doak's Boarding House & Charles Marshall

I would like to locate anyone, especially a Doak relative, who remembers Mrs. Georgia M. Doak's boarding house on 760 - 13th Street in Merced. Mrs. Doak was a widow. Her late husband, Ezekiel Doak, had worked for the city. He died in the very early 1930s. They had at least one son, George Doak (b. abt 1910 in California).

My Great-grandfather, Charles Marshall, lived in Mrs. Doak's boarding house from about 1932 (possibly even a couple years earlier) until his death in the Merced General Hospital in January 1937 after a 2-week stay. Charles (possibly known as "Charlie") was a widower, an elderly man in his late-60s/early 70's who spoke with an accent. We aren't sure, but think it was likely an English or maybe an east coast (New York or upper New England area) accent. He was born in New York, was about 5' 9" tall, medium build, blue eyes, clean shaven and balding on the top of his head. He had a son, Charles (aka "Charlie"), that lived in Portland, Oregon with his family, including two small sons, Charles and Richard Marshall. Up until his death, Charles Sr. was living on a small survivor's pension from the VA (from a step-son that was killed during World War I). His obituary in the "Merced Sun-Star" newspaper notes that he was a Spanish-Amercian War veteran but I need to know what branch and outfit he was in to locate his military records.

If anyone remembers Mrs. Doak's boarding house (or knows anyone that might remember this) and any of the people that lived there from 1930-36, please contact me. Many thanks.

Seeking descendants or knowledge of the Benjamin Snelling family who came to the area in 1849. The first seat of Merced County was at Snelling's Ranch, later called Snelling. Most of the Snellings went back to Missouri, but Ben's granddaughter, Frances White, married Charles Bludworth, first sheriff of Merced County. They had four children, one of whom married Henry F Latour. Frances White had two brothers who stayed in California, Joseph D White and Benjamin C White. I have Snelling info to share.
