I'm trying to find the parents and/or siblings of Zelpha Marie Baker O'Malley, who died in Willits on 20 Feb 1987. She was b 3 Aug 1895 in OH. She married Charles Walter O'Malley, who was b 12 Jun 1892 in IL. I don't know when or where he died. Maybe there was an obituary or perhaps someone there knew her? Thanks for any help!

I just came across the messages about the Abarr family.
I'm from Laytonville and my parents were friends of Earl and Mary Abarr. I'm just wondering if there is a connection between the Abarr's you mentioned and Earl and Mary. They lived in Laytonville, on a ranch they took care of. Earl and Mary met during WWI, as I remember the story. My dad said that he was related (by marriage, I think) to the Abarr's. I think that Earl had a son and maybe a brother, John. Does any of t his sound familiar to you?

Hi All,

I have just posted the first, of what I hope will be many, installments of graduates from different grades in different schools throughout Mendocino County. At the present, this is all I have, but I hope to find more newspaper lists to extract and add them to the lists posted tonight. At present there are only 2504 student graduations listed. As I find more published lists, I will add them to this database. If any of you have lists of graduates compiled for class reunions and would like to have them added to this, please contact me off the list and we'll see what we can work out.

I found my great grandfather Nathan Inman in the 1920 Ukiah census age 96. His wife was Sarah Jane Pishon age 86. My mother used to say he died at the age of 98 so I am assuming he died around 1922. Can not find anything on Sarah Jane or where she is buried but did find a N.D Inman buried in the cemetry there. . His son Nathaniel Burt Inman lived in Bishop and died there in 1926. I know he lived in Redwood city at one time. My father Alfred Inman was raised in the Bishop area. I am still trying to find some info on my ggparents and would appreciate it if some one can help. Thanks

He lived in Branscomb, California. I was there with him, 1975-1976. He took me out of the California Conservation Corp. and I have memories of good times in Branscomb, with Mike. Does anyone have a picture of Mike? Maybe someone could scan a picture, or I could take a picture of a picture with my digital camera. I haven't been to the cemetery yet. I just found out he died, recently. I have one of his brother Jerry, from an old newspaper Article. There was one picture in particular, that Mike showed me, of him leaving home, for the first time. It was a beautiful black and white one. I'm a genealogist and artist.

Looking for Ellen Mary(?) Mahoney and husband James H Tomlinson, married in Oakland CA in 1869. Had several children in Point Arena, including Henrietta 1869, William 1870, Clara 1873, Ida 1875, Jessie 1877, Louis 1879, Georgia 1881, and Albert 1884. Only Louis (our ancestor), Clara, and Ida are thought to have descendants.

James H Tomlinson is the brother of William T Tomlinson, who owned a livery stable in Point Arena, per 1870 census.

James H Tomlinson's family may have moved to Santa Clara Co. about 1890. Ellen/Helen on 1900 census in Cloverdale.

Ellen Mahoney Tomlinson died in 1911 in San Francisco; name on death certificate as provided by daughter Ida is Helen Mary Tomlinson, father Andrew Stevens. However, current research indicates she is probably the daughter of Andrew Mahoney and Mary Carey from Ireland, and was born in 1848 in Lambeth, Surrey, England. The family emigrated to Boston in 1850 and settled in Salem (1860 census). Ellen was said by her daughter Georgia to have come out to California to visit a cousin.

Looking for information about this family during their time in Point Arena, and for more information about Ellen/Helen's origins.

Brower families, Mendocino Co., California

I do not know if I am related to this family, but I suspect that I am because of the provenance of most Browers from New York and New Jersey.

In 1880 I find the following Brower family in Pomo, Calpella Twp., Mendocino Co., CA:

John 58 NJ NY NY
Mary 38 MO Ger MO
Joseph 16 CA NJ MO
Nellie, 12; Lillie, 11; Conrad, 6; and Lincoln, 3 were all born in California to parents from New Jersey and Missouri.

Note that "Brower" may look like "Brown". I find documentary evidence, a WWI draft card, that shows that Conrad Edward Brower is a farmhand employed by his brother Joseph, and it gives Conrad a birthdate of 13 May 1876. The 1900 Census shows a "Courath" Brower in Ukiah... this can only be CONRAD Brower, as the 1900 Census also gives the month of birth as May 1876. Conrad married a Catherine Weldon (I know this because I can trace two of her sons and one of her daughters through the California Death Index), born in April 1877 in Kansas. Children born before 1900 are Ralph (25 Nov 1895 - 7 Jan 1961, Sonoma Co.) and Harold E. Brower (29 Jan 1898- 4 Apr 1965, Mendocino Co.) Three are born in 1900 or later: Hershel, 10; Lola, 8; and Bernice, 6 -- according to the 1910 Census in Ukiah CA. I find that Lola Norene Butts, maiden name Brower, was born 25 Dec 1902 and died in Los Angeles Co. on 2 Nov 1954.

I do not accept the Census as a proof of the place of birth to any specificity other than the State or country in which one is born.

I do not live in California. More detail will be appreciated, including Mary's maiden name and some definitive statements of places of birth and death.

We are searching for information about Thomas J O'Neal, who settled in Point Arena in 1857. Wife: Malinda. Children: Caroline, Annah, Porter, Raymond and Margaret. We know that they were in Nevins Twp, Vigo County, IN in 1850. However we do not know the origins of Thomas or Malinda other than that they were born in Indiana. We also do not know where Thomas is buried, although records show Malinda buried in the IOOF cemetery at Point Arena. Porter remained in Point Arena all his life, while Raymond moved to the bay area sometime after 1880.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Michael Hallett
mhallett@socal.rr.com

Dispatch Democrat
Friday, December 11, 1931

Funeral Today for Mrs. Kate Prather
Prominent and Beloved Mother Passes to Rest. Funeral at Veteran's Hall

Mrs. Kate Brown Prather, one of the most revered and best beloved women of this city, passed away at her home in Ukiah, Wednesday, December 9, 1931.

The community has sustained an irreparable loss and mourns with the grief stricken family.

Mrs. Prather was born at Philo, January 12, 1866. She was the daughter of Dr. John T. Brown, a practicing physician of Anderson valley in the early days, and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Brown.

She was one of twelve children, all of whom except one who died at four years of age, grew to manhood and womanhood. They were men and women of culture and character and were known as a happy and united family.

Mrs. Prather attended the schools of Anderson valley where she later taught school for several years.

She was married to John T. Prather at Philo, December 15, 1888. The ceremony was performed by Justice of the Peace, Cornelius Prather, an uncle of the groom. Five children, four sons and one daughter were born to this union. Three of the children were born in Anderson valley and the other two at the old Elledge place on the Ukiah-Boonville road.

The family home has been in Ukiah during the greater part of their married life. They resided for a short period in Potter valley.

Her husband, John T. Prather, died at his home here January 4, 1928.

Mrs. Prather was a member of the Kingsley Chapter, No. 58, O. E. S., and Cornelia Rebekah Lodge, No. 205, of which she was a past noble grand and secretary.

When the Lewis White Post, No. 76, American Legion Auxilliary was organized September 1, 1920, she was made the secretary and has served in that capacity during the eleven years of its entire existence. She has labored loyally and earnestly for the advancement of the interest of the Legion and Auxillary and the welfare and happiness of their members. She was lovingly known in Legion life as "Mother Prather" and the organization will be desolate without her.

Mrs. Prather was of a deeply religious nature and an earnest student of the Bible although she was not affiliated with any church.

She was a woman of fine intelligence, sweet and gentle nature, and was universally beloved. Her friends are legion, and the whole community mourns the passing of this beautiful character.

She is survived by her five devoted children as follows: Hale Prather of Fairfax; Harvey Prather of Eureka, Willis Prather of Oakland; and Frain Prather and Mrs. Ardis De Motte of Ukiah. She even bids those she leaves behind not to grieve for her when she is gone.

This message in verse to her friends was composed during her last illness.

"Sleep soft beloved," we sometime say
Who have no tune to charm away.
Sad dreams that through the eyelids creep;
But never doleful dreams again
Shall break the happy slumber when
He giveth His beloved sleep.
And friends, dear friends, when it shall be
That this slow breath is gone from me,
And round my bier you come to weep,
Let one most loving of you all,
Say, "Not a tear o'er her must fall,
He giveth His beloved sleep."
Kate Prather, 1931

Phil Carnahan
Ukiah, CA

Mendocino County Indexes
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mendocem/

Mendocino County Tombstone Photos
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mendocem/index1.htm...
Obituary - Henry Holbrook Brown (1852-1946)

Mendocino Beacon
Saturday, February 2, 1946

H. H. BROWN DIES AT ANDERSON VALLEY HOME
WAS PIONEER RESIDENT OF THIS COUNTY, AGED 93

One of Mendocino county's oldest citizens and a pioneer coast business man, Henry H. Brown, died on Tuesday of this week at his home at Philo in Anderson Valley.

Mr. Brown had reached the extreme age of 93 years, and his death was due to a general decline due to his advanced years. He had been failing in health for some months, yet retained his keen mental faculties practically up to the last.

Mrs. Louise Nichols, valley nurse, cared for him in his last illness and with members of his family made his declining days as easy as possible. In the end
he sank into a deep sleep and never awakened.

Mr. Brown's family came to California when he was two years of age from Iowa, where Mr. Brown was born at Rome on November 8, 1852. His father was a pioneer physician and practiced in Anderson Valley for many years. The family was among the earliest to settle in that valley and in this county.

When still in his teens Mr. Brown came to the coast and took employment in the original Navarro mill at the mouth of the Navarro river. After earning a sufficient sum he went to San Francisco and took a commercial course.

On its completion he returned to the coast and took a position at Whitesboro, then a thriving town, in the store of J. L. Johnson, an early day merchant. Later Mr. Johnson moved to Mendocino and established himself in the building now occupied by the Remedy store, Mr. Brown coming with him. He eventually sold out to Mr. Brown and the late Prince W. Gray, who formed a partnership and later moved to the former Kelly store on the corner of Main and Lansing streets, where they continued in business for many years. In addition to their mercantile business they also did an extensive tie business, shipping from Russian Gulch harbor.

Mr. Brown retires from active business some 25 years ago and spent his winters at his home in Mendocino and the summers at Philo in Anderson Valley, where he owned the original homestead taken up by his father on settling in Anderson Valley. Several years ago because of encroaching age, he disposed of his home at Mendocino and thereafter spent all his time at Philo, where his son, Arnold, resides.

Mr. Brown was a keen sportsman and greatly enjoyed deer hunting and fishing until he had to give them up. He was identified with the business life of this coast and was an outstanding citizen of the county. He had been a Mason for many years and was the treasurer of the local lodge many years.

He was married to Miss Annie Peterson, a daughter of Thomas Peterson, and early day ship builder, on June 3, 1885, and Mrs. Brown survived, as do two sons, Leslie of San Francisco and Arnold of Philo; he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Stella Gowan of San Francisco and Mrs. Mary Lauchstedt of Honolulu, and one brother, Ralph Brown of Philo.

Funeral services were held at the Cannarr chapel in Fort Bragg, Friday with Rev. Thomas Smith, of Mendocino officiating. He also conducted a brief service at the grave in Evergreen cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest in the family plot.

Pallbearers were Henry Swanson,Asa Bishop, B. L. Elliott, William Gibbs, Carl Enochs and Alex McDonald.

The sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved family.

Phil Carnahan
Ukiah, CA

Mendocino County Indexes
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mendocem/

Mendocino County Tombstone Photos
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mendocem/index1.htm...
Ukiah Republican Press
Friday, December 12, 1902

H. H. and Frank Brown left for Anderson valley Wednesday upon receipt of news of the serious illness of their mother, wife of Dr. Brown of Philo. The lady has reached an advanced age and it is feared that the present sickness will prove fatal.

Ukiah Republican Press
Friday, December 19, 1902

TO ETERNAL REST.

Mrs. J. L. Brown Passed Away on the 6th Inst After a Brief Illness.

Mrs. Doctor J. L. Brown of Philo passed to her eternal rest December 6, at 9:45 p. m.

Inflammatory fever induced by erysipelas and other complications, were the cause of death. She suffered much during her brief illness, and at the close her numerous family—husband, sons, and daughters—were at her bedside.

The interment took place December 8 at Greenmound cemetery, near Boonville. A large concourse attended the funeral and the many mourners placed profuse flower offerings on the grave. Rev. Thornquest of Boonville performed the funeral services.

The community sincerely sympathizes with the family in their bereavement.

Mrs. Doctor J. L. Brown, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Frain, was born in Rochester, New York, September 22, 1832, and aged at the time of her death 70 years, 2 months and 14 days.

The family, then consisting of husband, wife, and three children, crossed the plains, arriving at Napa city in 1852, and moved to Anderson valley in 1862, where they have since resided.

Deceased was a faithful wife, affectionate mother, an idol in the family circle, and respected by all who knew her.

She was most sociable, companiable, and courteous, and possessed the good and kindly, traits which ennoble womankind.

If there is a happiness hereafter it is hoped it will be her share.

Peace to her ashes.
