My gg-grandfather's brother Stephen Bond (born 26Aug1825 England) went to California and died there. I have been trying to discern exactly where. I am pasting a copy of a newspaper notice from May 1873.
"The Evansville Journal says information was received in that city a few days since, of the murder, in California, of Stephen Bond, son of Mr. Cornelius Bond, a resident of this county near Millersburg, and a brother of Mrs. Isaac Mills, of Evansville. The Journal says:
The murder was committed last fall but the friends of the deceased were not apprised of it until quite recently, as it occurred in a wild region, about 50 miles from Maripoza, and twelve miles from his nearest neighbor, his only companion being a dog. The murder was not discovered until four days after it was committed, and all that is conjectured about it is that some person called on him pretending to desire to purchase some of the merchandise he kept for sale, and while was in the act of serving them, shot him through the head. This was conjectured from the position of the body when found. The assassin is known to have secured $120 in gold and a gold watch, and probably a great deal more.
Mr. Bond left this city twenty-three years ago in company with a Mr. Bradford. Both gentlemen were well known to all the older citizens. The deceased was forty-eight years old, a bachelor, and was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows. His lodge at Bear Valley, California, has transmitted to this city resolutions of respect to his memory. Mr. B. was possessed of considerable property, and Mr. John Mills, of this city, has gone to California to take charge of his effects for his relatives."
I am searching Mariposa County from the mention of "Maripoza" and that he was a member of the Bear Valley IOOF - and this is the only Bear Valley I could find that has/had an IOOF.
If it did not happen in Mariposa County, could someone hazard a guess where it did?
Thank You
