Cruikshank and Dugay 1850-1865 period

Looking for any and all information I can find about the CRUIKSHANK brothers - William T., James T., and John K., SPECIFICALLY during the time that they lived in and around what is now Madera County, from about 1850 to about 1865. Don't know how/where records in the geographic area are kept and organized from before the county was established. I do have the info on James T., attorney, found in Fresno County histories; and I do know that Wm. T. was a member of the Mariposa Battalion. There is a reference to a Cruikshank in the Madera County Gen. Society Journal III/4:3 but no way of telling if it's one of my guys.

Also seeking any and all info for a Dr. DUGAY (physician) who lived in the general geographic area in 1853. He's also mentioned briefly in Fresno County histories but not anywhere else I can find.

HUGH FIELDS

CHOWCHILLA - Funeral services were held in the Worden Funeral Chapel today at 2 p.m. for Hugh Fields, 77, who passed away in the Madera County Hospital on Tuesday. Rev. Floyd Baker of the Assembly of God Church officiated. Interment was in the Chowchilla District Cemetery.

Mr. Fields was born in Kentucky. At an early age he moved with his family to Mulberry, Arkansas where he grew up and attended school. He was a school teacher in Tennessee during his lifetime. Twenty years ago he moved to California and fourteen years ago to Chowchilla where he farmed in his retirement.

He is survived by two sons, Horace Fields of Los Angeles and Joseph Fields of Georgia; four daughters, Mrs. Agnes Dix of Florida, Mrs. Myrtle Mayville of Arkansas, Mrs. Loretta Jones and Mrs. Mamie Dee, both of Chowchilla; twenty-seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Walter Fields of Arkansas and two sisters, Mrs. James Reed of Arkansas and Mrs. Mattie York of Pixley.

Firebaugh Cemetery

My grandmother was buried in a cemetary off the main road that goes from Mendota to Firebaugh to Dos Palos.
I remember taking flowers to a cemetary near some tracks
and some type of large building. I was told the cemetary was moved but I was not given an exact place where my grandmother was moved to.

She had to have been there in 1950's because I have a picture standing next to a tall headstone
her name was Juanita E. PEREZ. Her family lived in the Hotchikiss (sp) ranch in that area. Would you know where I could begin to find where she was moved to?

Mrs. Cora Esther Krout, 76, died in a local hospital Wednesday.

Mrs. Krout, a native of Crocker, Mo., had lived in Madera for the past five years.

Surviving are five sons, C.B. Krout of Enid, Okla.; Oscar E., Rockland (sic), Ovid W. and Delmar I. of Concord, and Robert T., Norwalk; three daughters, Mrs Mamie Fulks, Stockton; Mrs. Susie Evans, Madera and Mrs Selma (sic) Kleiber, Martinez; a sister Mrs. Stella Campbell of Oregon and a brother Frank LEE, Napa, also26 grandchildren and a large number of great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock in the Madera Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Arbor Vitae Cemetery. Rev. Lawrence Wood will officiate.

Oscar lived in Rocklin, CA. (He was my grandfather, and I grew up in Rocklin, so I'm sure about this one.)

Mrs. Kleiber's name was Thelma, not Selma.

The first son listed, C.B. (Cyrus Brook), was actually the son of the first wife of Thomas C. Krout, Laura Groves. She died about 1890 - 1895.

This information was informally passed down to me through the family, but I have been unable to verify it, or find out where he was buried. William "Bud" Barton

Mr. William "Bud" Barton passed away on Saturday, June 5, 2004 at the age of 82. He was a native of Addington, OK and had been a resident of Madera since 1944. Bud worked for M.I.D as a ditch tender for 22 years. He was a member of The Grange. He enjoyed working in his yard and gardening. He liked to travel in his RV, heading north in the summer and south in the winter.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sisters and his granddaughter Stefanie Koretoff.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years Hollene Barton of Madera, his children Billy Joe Barton and his wife Bonnie of Kingsburg, Frances Helton and her husband Calvin of Madera and Donna Zapata and her husband Don of Madera; his brothers Jack Barton of Oklahoma and Harley Barton of Hemet, CA; his sister Janet Clayton of Oklahoma, seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 9, 2004 from 1:00-8:00 PM at Jay Chapel. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, June 10, 2004 at 10:00 AM at Arbor Vitae Cemetery.

Seeking researchers/descendants of the following family:

Willis G. or E. Peabody, b. abt. 1894 California (father b. MA or OH; mother b. MA or IA.) m. abt. 1919 or 1920 Frances Yauch, b. abt. 1904, dau of Thomas & Lusia Yauch.

In 1920 Willis was a machinist. (I can't make out his occupation in 1930.) In both censuses they were living in Madera, CA. Their children as of 1930 were:

Tomas A. Peabody, b. abt. 1924 CA

Looks like Willis died May 1965 per SSDI.

I have Frances Yauch's line back MANY generations. I am related to her descendants.

Frances' father was Thomas Yauch, b. 1878; m1 Lusia (b. CA of Swedish parents); m2 Anna (b. Norway). Still alive in 1930 census living on Vanguard St. in Madera City.

Chowchilla -- Mary Machado Eastman, who lived in Chowchilla for 61 years, died Wednesday at Chowchilla Memorial Hospital. She was 68.

Mrs. Eastman was born in Ripon. She was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church and UPPEC.

Survivors include her husband, Ralph Eastman of Chowchilla; three sons, James Eastman of Berkeley, and Frank and Harold Eastman, both of Chowchilla; a daughter, Marianne Levey of Merced, and three grandchildren.

Combined Rosary and Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Columba Catholic Church. Monsignor Daniel Lopez will conduct the service and burial will be in the Chowchilla District Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Worden Chowchilla Funeral Chapel.

Chowchilla -- Rosary will be recited tonight at 8 in the Worden Funeral Chapel for Robert Leslie Eastman, 41, of 12580 Avenue 25 1/2, who died in a San Francisco Hospital Wednesday. Mass will be offered Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Columba's Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Chowchilla District Cemetery.

A native of Washington State, he moved to Chowchilla at three months of age. He attended local schools and two years at Fresno State College. He has farmed since leaving college.

He was president of the Campfire Girls Council, active in Little League Baseball, a past scoutmaster and active in the Chowchilla Potato Growers Association.

He is survived by his wife, Olive of Chowchilla; his parents Mr. and Mrs. H. V. Eastman of Chowchilla; two brothers, Ralph J. Chowchilla and Harold B. of Fresno; two sisters, Mrs. Helen O'Brien of Chowchilla and Mrs. Frances Dill of Fresno; and two daughters, Miss Leslie Marie of Chowchilla and Mrs. Leanne Gerlie of Marysville.

Judge Eastman Rites Monday In Chowchilla

Chowchilla -- Services will be held on the First Baptist Church Monday at 2 p.m. for H.V. (Judge) Eastman, 81, former mayor of Chowchilla and former justice court judge.

Judge Eastman died Thursday in a local hospital. A community leader for many years, he founded the Chowchilla Water District in 1949 and served as its manager until his death.

He served as mayor for 16 years and presided over the Chowchilla Justice Court for 20 years. He organized and directed Calcot and the Production Credit Association and Federal Land Bank of Chowchilla. He was an organizer of the California fair and served on its governing board.

Judge Eastman was a member of the Masonic Lodge and received his 50-year membership award five years ago. A veteran of World War 1, he was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Laura Eastman, whom he married in Minnesota in 1920; two sons, Harold of Fresno and Ralph of Chowchilla; two daughters, Mrs. Francis Dill and Mrs. Helen O'Brien, both of Fresno; 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

I understand that the above couple, my relatives, owned the first playhouse in the Chowchilla area. He died in 1945 and she in 1973. I was wondering if anyone had any information on this playhouse or ever heard of them. This is all of the information I have except that they had no children and I have the names of Edna's parents.

One of my mother's aunts died in Ahwahnee, Calfornia and she just recently found out about it. There was no obituary sent but I am curious as to where would be the closest place to it where there would be a newspaper and what would that newspaper be called?
I am also wondering if a person dies there, which funeral home in the area would be nearby?
ANY information concerning this would be extremely useful.
My mother lost touch with them when they left Oklahoma during the 1930s Depression and has been looking for her folks who went to California for many years.

I am looking for a phone number for the cemetery district of Medera City. I am trying to locate the burial place of George W Pool who was last found on the 1910 census in that city. He was 78 years old at the time of that census. Possible his wife Rosa Lyons Pool is buried there too. Does this message board have some one with a master list for cemeteries or does anyone do lookups? George came to California as a young man with his father Maston P Pool during the gold rush and ended up staying. He went back to Ark twice but always returned to California. The old record of gold rushers coming from the south that was kept by Isaac Williams at the Cahone Pass Ranch shows entries for George and Maston and then again for George only. Researching the Henry and Margaret Werfield family that left Luzerne County, PA in 1900 for California; children included William H., George, Mary, Clifford, Bessie, and Katherine (my great grandmother who married Jesse E. Landback and died in childbirth in 1883, at least according to family tale). In 1900, Henry, Margaret, Mary, George, Bessie and Jesse W. Landback (my grandfather, son of Katherine and Jesse E. Landback) are found living in Madera County, CA. I also find evidence of William H. Werfield in Fresno County, CA and Glenn County, CA. Jesse W. Landback married Elfleda Moutrey in Madera County in 1904; sheh is the daughther of Thomas and Mary Moutrey.
