ANASTOS, Rosemary Park (97)
Prominent educator Rosemary Park Anastos passed
away quietly in her Los Angeles home on April
17. She earned her doctorate in German
literature at the University of Cologne in 1934
with a dissertation on Richard Wagner. She was
Professor of German and Academic Dean at
Connecticut College from 1943 to 1947 and served
as President of the college from 1947 to 1962.
In 1962 she accepted an appointment as President
of Barnard College and Dean in Columbia
University, moving in 1967 to UCLA, where she
was a Vice-Chancellor from 1967 to 1970 and
Professor of Higher Education from 1967 until
her retirement in 1974. She received numerous
recognitions and honors, including honorary
degrees from 25 universities and colleges. She
was the widow of Milton V. Anastos,
distinguished Professor of Byzantine Greek and
History at UCLA, who died in 1997. She
supervised the publication of a portion of her
late husband's unfinished survey of Byzantine
intellectual history.
A memorial service will be
held at the UCLA Faculty Center at 4 p.m.,
Wednesday, May 5.
