I am looking for any information on Margaret Kelin. She is/was my dad's cousin. Her father was Harry Bangerter. The only thing I know about her is that she lived in Kernville CA in 1978 (according to her father's death certificate) and her husband's name was Vern. I would like to get in touch with her and/or any relatives - we did not know that Harry had a daughter until just recently and her family would like to find her. Thank you!

Trying to find Gravesite for Minnie Wilson. She is my Grandmother's sister.
She was born in Lavaca County Tx in about 1881. She moved with her brother, William to Bakersfield during the mid 1920's. They lived and managed a gas Station Auto park in Bakersfield in 1930.
She died about 1932 and may be buried in Portersville.
Any cemetery help would be appreciated.

MOJAVE MAN MAKES RECORD

With regard to service in the armed forces during the recent war the Frank Apalatea family of Mojave, seem to have established something of a record, unmatched in almost any other section of Kern county.
Frank's son, Ralph Apalatea, was killed in action in Italy in July, 1944, and two other sons, Lawrence and Frank, besides a brother, Henry are still in the service.
In addition to these, Mr. Apalatea has eight nephews in the service, they are Billy Burlando, Fred Butterbredt jr, Grant lszuierdo, Ben Apalatea, jr., Johnnie Price, Dick Price, Delmer Price, and Art Malone.
I
Staff Sgt. Frank, Apalatea, jr. joined the armed forces Octoher 17, 1939 and has fought in the Central Pacific area, Guadalcanal and the North Solomons.

I have pictures that were given to me by a GOAR cousin. Most were of his cousin Andrew Orville BOEDECKER who parents were Henry BOEDECKER and Mary E. (McTEER) BOEDECKER WEST, 1873-1966. The providing cousin is a grandson of Martha J. (McTEER) PARADEE BARCO BOGART, 1871-1953, sister of Mary.

They all appear to be relatives except one person who is just ID'd as "BURNS". He is in two pictures with John DELLIPLAINE and Orville and apparently a dog named "Foxy". I was given most of these images on the condition that I find whom they might belong to. One picture is dated 1916. But a couple seem to be WWII era.

So if known to anyone, please let me know.

I am in of an obit for Frances "Jolene" (Winters) Gibson Green, as she is Frances J. Green in the SSDI, lived in Taft, Kern, CA. She had also lived in Bakersfield, CA as Jolene Gibson, but apparently remarried.
She died 20 Jul 2000. She has a brother Jesie Leonard (Jr.) "Arch" Winters, b.abt 1924, lived in Pomona, CA, may still be living but cannot locate as either.

Edward was born in Oak Leaf, Leeds Co., Ontario in 1816. He was the son of William Webster & Alice Murphy.
He married Elizabeth Ann Tremayne and had four children: Francis, Elizabeth, Caroline & Wellington. They lived in Creemore, Ont.

After the death of Elizabeth, Edward married Mary Langtry and they had 4 children: Susan Laura, George, Kate & Arthur James.

Edward died in 1902 in Bakersfield, California.

I am seeking possible obit/news stories for the brothers Paul and George SHANNON. Paul was a peace office and George was a captain with the fire department (as was another brother Joseph).

In the 1910 Bakersfield census there is a Paul SHANNON, policeman with wife, Amanda. Not certain if these are the same Pauls. In 1920 policeman Paul is with a different wife, Tekla(?) who immigrated in 1906 and was naturalized in 1913 (Sweden).

My desire is to learn if these SHANNON are related to Leonard James SHANNON b. abt 1870 s/o James and Sarah (DUNCAN) SHANNON. Leonard was the first husband of Amanda's sister, Lucinda (McTEER). They had at least one child, Grant SHANNON.

I need some good 'eyes' to interpret the surname for members in the household of John PENNINGTON,

age 44(?) born MI, street address 2?05 Cedar St. There are actually two listings. One was 'X' out.

In his household are wife, Blanche, age 28, a stepson whose name I cannot read, age 10, born MO, a daughter, whose name I cannot read, age 7, born CA and in one listing a brother-in-law, John DELLIPLAINE. In the other listing he is included in the next household:

I believe that Blanche is actually Blanche HUFCUT, daughter of my great grandfather's, John

McTEER (1877-1912), sister, Amanda (McTEER) HUFCUT DELLIPLAINE SHANNON(?) (1868-1953). In the 1910 listing, Amanda appears to be in the household of a younger Paul SHANNON (policeman) with separation occuring before the 1920 census where Paul is with a different 'wife' and Amanada is listed under DELLIPLAINE as a cook in a boarding house.

So I need assistance reading the names of the two children. Blanche would died in 1953 (Fresno Co.) with the surname HARRIS.

Would anyone do a lookup for Josephine Waterman and her son Nelson Conway Waterman for 8 issues (1910-1918) in the microfilm of the Bakersfield City Directory, call #917.9488 B 178 in the California Room of the Fresno Central Library? I believe it would involve 2 reels of microfilm-one of 1906 - 1914; another of 1915-1921 according to the catalog I saw online. I have information that they were living in DELANO in 1912 and would like to see what the address is and perhaps any listed occupation, especially for Nelson C. Waterman. The full title of the Bakersfield city directory on line says it includes rural addresses. Josephine Waterman is the divorced mother b. 1855 so age 65+ and probably keeping house for Nelson C. Crash Kills One, Injures Four

A head on crash between two automobiles last Friday' night at 8:30 p.m., 3 miles west of Mojave on Hwy. 466 caused major injuries to five people, one of whom died Tuesday in a Mojave hospital.
Fatally injured was C. F. Nikkel of Reedly, Calif., who was a passenger in the car, a '41 Plymouth, driven by Samuel Adrian of Fresno, other riders in the death car were the driver's wife, Mrs. Adrian and a Mrs. Turah Green of Dinuba. Mr. Nikkel's body was taken to the O'Donnell Funeral Home from which it will be shipped to Reedly for burial.
Driver of the other car concerned, a '47 Cheve, was Charles Palmer of Lamont, Calif., who was headed south into Mojave. He and Mrs. Green were taken to Kern General Hospital and the other injured were removed to Mojave Medical Center.
Investigation of the tragic accident was made by Highway Patrol t officers Ray Brown and Don Dutcher.
A coroners hearing was held in Mojave on Wednesday morning at the O 'Donnell Funeral Home and the verdict was accidental death.

Can anyone find an OBIT for him, and where he might be buried? I tried to use the query tool on the Kern Co GENWEB board, it it is not working since GENWEB moved away from Ancestry's domain.

He was the oldest son of Oran C HANEY and wife Julia G BRENNAN(sp) who both died in Madera Co CA.

The HANEY roots began in NC to TN and then to TX and beyond.

I just recently got a birth certificate for Rosalyn Soares and Howard Arthur SCHULZ's daughter and in 1954 Roslyn was 32 so would have been born about 1922. The Soares, Silva and Madruga families appear to be in Tulare Co in 1917 to 1923 at least then move to Kern Co.

On 7/5/1997 my school days friend, Kenya Kay Kennedy Moore passed away in Kern County, CA. I found the death information by accident and have written and phoned local libraries in that area looking for an obituary or any additional information but thus far none has assisted me in finding this information.

Kenya was born 10/24/1936 in CA. Her mother's maiden name was Benson. I also do not know the full name of her husband, when they were married or if they had children. Kenya's last zip code was 93561 - Tehachapi.

Funeral services were held on Oct. 23 for Thomas (Buster) Davis, who passed away on Oct. 19 at Minden, Nev.
Thomas was born in Tehachapi on Sept. 23, 1924, to Chauncey and Maude Davis. He graduated from Tehachapi High School in 1942, and soon after joined the Army, being attached to the 526th Armored Infantry Bn, where he saw action in the European Theater of War in the Battle of the Bulge. He was later awarded the Purple Heart for bravery and wounds sustained.
A career with the Los Angeles Police Department spanned 30 years with retirement on June 29, 1978. The last 15 years of his law enforcement career were spent with the Burglary Auto Theft Division.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen Ennis Davis, and his nine children, Michele Davis Centers and husband Bill of Minden, Nev.; Mary Davis Landau and husband Martin of Fountain Valley; Ann Davis Stepanian and husband Art of Hacienda Heights; Michael Davis and wife Kathy of San Gabriel; Paty Davis of Minden, Nev.; Joan Davis Ramos of Montebello; Joseph Davis and wife Jamie of Diamond Bar; Susie Davis of North Hills; and Thomas Davis and Maria Ducote of Hawaii; plus 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren who were close to his heart. He is also survived by a sister, Pat Gracey of Tehachapi and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Chauncey and Maude Davis; a sister, Evelyn Catalano; and brother, Everett Davis.
Officiating at the Mass of Resurrection were Father William Nadeau, Pastor of St. Gall Catholic Church in Gardnerville, Nev. and Father John Gracey of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bishop.

I am tracing my husband, Gary Bernard's family, they moved to Kern County, CA from Oklahoma in the early 1900s. His father's name was Kenneth Bernard and he grew up in Wasco, CA. Kenneth was born on Feb. 24, 1933 and passed away in 2004.

If anyone can help locate the names of Kenneth's parents, I would be very grateful.

ISABELLA MAN DIES JUMPING FROM VEHICLE

Chon Luna, a 24 year old Lake Isabella resident died Saturday morning of severe head trauma, injuires which were caused when he escaped from a moving vehicle the previous evening.
At approximately 8:45 pm Saturday Luna jumped from the passenger seat of a pickup truck which was traveling at about 45 to 50 miles per hour, according to a press release issued this weekend by a Kern County deputy coroner.
Investigating authorities related that Luna had wished to flee from an argument he was having with his girlfriend who was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident by jumping out of the truck's passenger window.
He passed away of severe head trauma t 1:21 Saturday in the emergency Room of Kern Medical Center.
An investigation to determine the circumstances of Luna's incident is being undertaken by the California Highway Patrol's Lake Isabella substation.

Former Ridgecrest resident Richard Dean Wilie passed away Friday, Apr. 2, 2004 in Las Vegas, Nev. He was 66.
A memorial service will be held Thurday, Apr. 8 at 1:30 pm at IWV Masonic Lodge #684, 625 N. Norma St.
Mr. Wilie was born Oct. 6, 1937 in Lordsburg, N.M. to Richard Harvey Wilie and Wilma Lucine Russom.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1960 and spent 35 years working as a test manager for civil service. He had lived in Ridgecrest for 20 years and was the Pat Grand Master of Masonic Lodge #684.
Donations in his memory may be made to the IWV Masonic Lodge #684.
He is survived by four daughters Cori, Becky, Brenda and Tammy, three sons Russ, James and John, his mother Wilma Lucine Russom of Rathdrum, Idaho, three sisters Betty, Jeannie and Susie, brother Bob, 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Seeking any information on a divorce between this couple after 1930 and a room fire in Bakersfield, CA after 1930 where Thomas supposedly died. I was unable to find any Thomas J. Ida May Heflin m Emmett Brown in Pope Co, AR in 1908. They had several sons in AR before going to Bakersfield, CA sometime after 1923. The 1920 census lists the sons as Earl, Burl, Merle and Jesse. There was another named Herman Emmitt Brown born in 1923 in AR and died 1949 in Kern Co, CA. Evidently, something happened to Mr. Brown after they went to CA and Ida married Raymond Clyde Kinsey. She died 8-13-1949 in Kern Co, CA as Ida May Kinsey. Ida is the half sister of my ggrandfather. I would appreciate any help making contact with her descendants. Can anybody do an obituary lookup for her?

John A. Dowdy was born in Missouri 11 Jan 1858. He married three times in that state, surviving all three wives. He and his third wife, Ruth Ann Culbertson, had two children, both of whom went to Kern County, CA to live following the death of Ruth Ann in 1911, seeking work in the oil fields. I have located him and his two children in that area in both the 1920 and 1930 census. My information is that John A. Dowdy died 31 Dec 1939 in Kern County, California.

Elzie Dowdy, youngest son of John A. Dowdy and Ruth Ann Culbertson Dowdy, is enumerated in Bakersfield in the 1930 census. He is married to Maud Montel and they have one daughter, Maudine, at that time. I have no other information about Elzie or his family.

Effie M. Dowdy married Floyd A. Farris in Bakersfield abt. 1920. They continued to live in that area until Effie's death in 1956. Floyd relocated to Santa Barbara some time after that date and died there in 1966.

According to SSDI she died January 28, 1974 in Bakersfield, Kern County, California. Belva was originally from Ivanhoe, Wythe County, Virginia being born there in 1890. I noticed many obit messages on this board and wondered if there was any way possible to find an obituary if you only know that it was for a Jack or Mae Delaney or another Delaney family since the 1980s. The Mojave-Kern County Sheriff's office reported an apparent natural death this week.
Victor William Howard, 37, 2411 Angela St., Apt A, Pomona was found dead in his car near the city limits of California City.
Discovery was made July 28 at 11:50 p.m. and the body was taken to Stickel Mortuary.
An autopsy is pending.

Lee Pierce and wife Jessie leased the Jameson in the early 50 through the 60ies and put the Black Angus cattle on the property. This is an assumption but I believe the land was originally purchased by Mulholland for the building of the Aquaduct that supplied the water to Los Angeles. It was originally the Cuddeback Ranch which encompassed 6000 acres. The town of Monolith began and Monolith Portland Cement Plant was completed around 1912. Some of the ranch managers were Donald Bailey, Mr. Nelson, Kenneth Baker. If anyone has additional information regarding the Jameson Ranch it would be greatly appreciated. The son of Rawley Duntley also lived there as well as the Davis's.

Twin sons Emmet S. and Estil Lee BAILEY were born on the 8th of October 1897 in Oklahoma to David Andrew Bailey and my great-great Aunt Nancy Elizabeth KIMBLER (half sister to my grandfather James William LEONARD).
Emmet apparently moved to California at some point in time because I can find him on California death index (mother's maiden name given as Kembler). I would like to know where he was buried and in what city (or near what city) he died? Can anyone help me?

BAKERSFIELD (Kern Co.), March 29. - Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Franey of 1700 Forest Street, Bakersfield, were notified by the war department late yesterday their youngest son, Corporal Francis Franey, 22, was killed in the Marshall Islands in the crash landing of a B29.
Young Franey, who was born and reared in Bakersfield, was chief gunner on a B29. He was educated in the local schools and attended Santa Clara University before entering the army. His father, a well known local insurance man, formerly was connected with the banking business here.
There are three other brothers in the service, Joseph, serving with the army in Europe; John, in India, and Lieutenant Gerald Franey, in Germany. Another brother, James, is due to enter the army tomorrow.

BAKERSFIELD. May 17. - Word was received today of the death of Capt. Ernest B. McMahan, 23, of Bakersfield, in an airplane accident in England, where he was stationed as a squadron leader in a Mustang group.
He had three more combat hours to complete before becoming eligible for a leave home. He leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. B. McMahan, and his widow, all of this city.

Tank Man Is Killed
TAFT (Kern Co.), Feb. 17. – Word has been received in Taft that Private Robert McCurdy, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. McCurdy of Santa Cruz, was killed in battle in France February 4th.
McCurdy was a member of the tank corps. He attended the Taft schools and was graduated from the Taft Junior College in 1941.
The family resided on the Honolulu Oil Company lease until a few years ago, when the elder McCurdy was retired and the family moved to Santa Cruz.
McCurdy had been overseas approximately a year. In addition to his widow, Mrs. Shirley McCurdy, and his parents, he is survived by two aunts residing in Taft, Mrs. Ruth Scheidt and Mrs. Letha Colbert.

TAFT (Kern Co.), Dec. 29. - Private First Class Eugene Oxford, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. O. (Johnnie) Oxford, 318 Buchanan Street, was killed in action in Germany December 13th. Mr. and Mrs. Oxford received a letter from him only Tuesday, in which he said he was "in Germany as far as any Yank."
Oxford had been overseas since October, 1944. He would have been 21 years old next April. He was graduated from the Taft Union High School, where he played football in 1941, and enlisted in the army March 20, 1942, while attending the Santa Barbara State College. His paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Oxford of Taft, and his maternal grandmother is Mrs. Dorothy Vorhees, formerly of Maricopa but now of South Gate.

Rites Are Set For GI Killed In War

BAKERSFIELD (Kern Co.), Dec. 23. – Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday for Sergeant Clyde B. Gentry of Oildale who was killed in action in Belgium January 18, 1945. The services will be at 2 PM in the Greenlawn Chapel with Rev. B. C. Barrett of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Gentry was 37 years old at the time of his death. His body is being returned by the army transport Carroll Victory and is due here on Monday.
He is survived by three sons, James and Ray Gentry of Visalia and Robert Gentry, United States Marine Corps, Camp Pendelton; his mother, Mrs. Anna M. Gentry of Oildale; a brother Elmer S. Gentry of Oildale, and three sisters, Mrs. Florence Tripp and Mrs. Mildred Smith, both of Fresno and Mrs. Alice McArthur of Wallula, Wash.

Westerman's mother is Mrs. J. W. Jones, 2105 South I Street, Bakersfield.
Westerman was graduated from the Bakersfield High School and was employed in the Kern General Hospital before enlisting in the navy last April. He was a pharmacist's mate in the navy.

This was announced today by the war department.
Griffith was the husband of Mrs. Mildred R. Griffith, 1311 Beale Avenue, Bakersfield, and a son of Mrs. Lucy Scruggs Griffith, formerly of the Kings River district, Kings County. He also leaves a brother, Albert Griffith of Coalinga, and a baby daughter in Bakersfield.

Flier Once Saved Is Killed In Action

BAKERSFIELD (Kern Co.), March 14. - A casualty list announced by the navy department today lists First Lieutenant Milton N. Vedder of the marine corps as killed in action.
Vedder was a son of Dwight G. Vedder, former oil geologist who became the owner of extensive oil properties in the Mount Poso area.
The family lived a Coalinga and Bakersfield and Milton Vedder spent his boyhood in this city. His wife lives at the Motel Inn here.
In May, 1943, a dispatch from the South Pacific told how a navy flying boat had rescued Vedder from an island after his plane had been shot down by Japanese.

Son Is Killed

BAKERSFIELD (Kern Co.), April 6. - Staff Sergeant Arthur M. Nutt of Bakersfield was killed in action on Luzon.
His mother, Mrs. J. B. Alsup of this city, was notified of his death in a telegram from the war department.
Nutt landed at Lingayen Gulf early in the invasion, in which a brother, First Lieutenant Frank Nutt, also participated. He was wounded by a sniper January 27th, recovered and returned to active duty.
Another brother, Corporal Kenneth Nutt, also is in the Philippines. Sergeant Nutt was born in Taft, was graduated from the Bakersfield High School and was a member of the Future Farmers of America.
Besides his two brothers and mother, who lives at 123 Mears Drive, he is survived by a step-father, J. B. Alsup; a sister in law, Mrs. F. M. Nutt; a niece, Nancy Jeanne Nutt; his father, E. M. Nutt of Coalinga; a grandmother, Mrs. Tishia Trivett of Taft.
