Hi,

My grandfather was Inyo County Supervisor 1920-1937. This home was at the north end of Big Pine and was the "County Farm" as it was called. It was in his supervisorial district. He frequently mentions his visits there in his diaries which I have. It was a farm for the poor and elderly where they could raise their own vegetables, meat, and be taken care of by attendants when needed. Kind of a different system than today. He often looked in on the folks there and provided materials for them. A few times, he also provided a bull or two for their meat animal raising. This was after your ancestor was there but the same kind of set up was involved. Mrs. Campbell might be buried in the Big Pine Cemetery as there was no cemetery at the farm. The county also provided for the burial of the folks probably with a headstone. You can call Brune Mortuary at (760)873-4266. They are very helpful and can probably look up the particulars of her burial, etc. I think they have the valley records back to 1910. This farm, by the way, because the Big Pine Care Center later on and recently closed and moved to Bishop as the Bishop Care Center. They might have some old records or could tell you where they are. The Big Pine Care Center will soon be torn down.

The Register printed stories later based on, I believe, interviews with survivors. The articles are referred to in Gunfighters, Highwaymen, & Vigilantes by McGrath.
My GGGrandfathter hired Van Fleet and Douglas to care for cattle stolen (eaten) in 1862. I am trying to corroborate some additional information I have about it, along with some additional characters involved. (see list below)

Abraham Klauber, Ben G.
For your research I would suggest trying to get hold of a book called "The Boys in the Sky-Blue Pants" by Dorothy Cragen. That will have a lot of the history of the Indian Wars and the relocation of the Indians. Also, I thought The Inyo Independent was the only newspaper operating at that time, but now I'm questioning my memory. Anyway, the Independent was printed in Independence, which was really the hub of activity then. The book I mentioned above talks above California Infantry who were stationed at Fort Independence and were originally sent to the valley because of troubles with the Indians.

Hope this all helps! You can find the index to "Boys..." at http://www.cagenweb.com/inyo/

Denise S.
Inyo Marble Quarries north of Keeler, CA

The following are excerpts from Appendix To "The Journals of The Senate and Assembly of The Twenty-Seventh Session of The Legislature of the State of California," Vol. VII, Sacramento: State Office, P. L. Shoaff, Supt. State Printing, 1887, pp. 193-195.

Inyo County & the Inyo County Marble Quarries (circa 1887)

“Inyo County lies between the State line and the high Sierra Nevada Mountains, the western boundary being along the summit of the latter, at an elevation of several thousand feet above the general level of the rest of the country and 8,000 or 10,000 above the sea. Northerly and southerly it extends from township line between townships 5 and 6 on the north, and a sixty standard line on the south, and contains 8,120 square miles, and a population of between 3,000 and 4,000. It is a country where extremes meet; a country of startling contrasts, such as are to be found, probably, nowhere else on the continent; a country of rugged and giant peaks, among which are Mt. Abbott (12,400 feet), Mt. King (14,000 feet), Mt. Williamson (14,500 feet), Mt. Tyndall (14,386 feet), Mt. Whitney (15,000 feet), and Inyo (some 15,000 feet), upon which the snow of ages forever rests, and forming a giant wall upon its west, as if to shut it from all connection with the State of which it forms a part, marked by precipitous and sharp outlines and deep chasms, such as to render an ascent to their summits from their eastern slopes almost an impossibility; a country where to the eastward of those peaks pointing heavenward the earth’s surface ins hundreds of feet beneath the level of the sea, as in that valley, once the valley of mystery and fear, known as Death’s Valley; a country of beautiful and fertile plains, and of forbidding wastes; a country of almost Arctic frosts and torrid heat....”

“...But there is another source of wealth possessed by this county of comparatively recent discovery. We allude to a vast quarry of the finest marble. A writer, speaking of the discovery, says:

"It is virtually a mountain of marble, rising to nearly 1,000 feet above the level of Owens River Valley. Whether or not it existence had before attracted attention is not known, but about 4 months ago D. A. Bender, of the Nevada and Colorado Railroad Company, procured a piece of the marble, and sent it to Israel Luce, a well known and experienced marble worker in Sacramento, to be tested as to its quality. Mr. Luce, after making several tests, became convinced that it was of a superior quality. He then visited the Owens Lake section, and satisfied himself of the fact that the ledge, or mountain, was practically inexhaustible, and the marble extra fine throughout - by all odds the best ever found on the coast. Further tests convinced him that it was better even than the famed Italian marble, and for these reasons:

1. It is whiter, clearer, and of a better uniform color throughout.
2. It is stronger, having double the power of resistance to crushing weight.
3. It is free from flint.
4. It will not stain as readily as Italian or other marbles.
5. It will not effervesce by the application of muriatic acid, and if acid will not work on it, it is but reasonable to suppose that atmosphere will not. Geology teaches that dolomite (marble) or magnesian limestone is the most durable stone of the secondary formation; also, that being burned into quicklime it makes a more desirable cement than common limestone, owing to the fact that it absorbs less carbonic acid from the atmosphere than the latter. The eminent geologist, Von Beach, maintains that this peculiar quality of dolomite has been given it by volcanic vapor or gas. Some deny this, but give no better - nor, indeed, any other - cause for this change in the nature of marble.

“If this marble is all that is claimed for it in quality and quantity, Inyo has in this a better source of wealth and prosperity than in all her mines.

“The Carson and Colorado Railroad runs through the valley from end to end. Fine marble quarries are being opened and worked at Owens Lake, and works for the evaporation of the waters of that lake to obtain the soda are now set afloat....”

“The tax list for 1885 shows no falling off from 1884, but in the last few months the population has increased and the county has obviously made material progress. The advent of the Carson and Colorado Railroad upset old conditions, and the transition state was a trying one. That state, however, is now past, and the county is coming every day to a basis more and more permanent and thorough, and more in accord with the new conditions.”

Peggy B. Perazzo
pbperazzo@comcast.net
Yolo County CA GenWeb Project, Coordinator
http://www.cagenweb.com/yolo/index.htm
Stone Quarries and Beyond
http://quarriesandbeyond.org/

I am afraid I will have to have persistance and patience as we don't know much about Jenny but we have the rest of her family, its a long and a bit sad of tale.

I will have to wait for the census to come out in 4 years and perhaps it will provide more clues.

Jennie's parents both emigrated to states from PEI Canada i n 1909 to Bishop and stayed with Charles Dixon and family as in the 1920 census - George remarried and left Jennie in their care.

Thanks again
Between marriages, migrations, the wars, and the privacy act that's so prevalent now, it's hard to trace people in the more modern decades - especially women.
The name Villett is also a little tricky to trace - it seems to be related to 3 or 4 different origins - French Canada, English Canada, France, Italy, etc., so there are potentially at least a dozen different ways to spell it. If the individual became creative in the way he spelled his name to make himself stand out, or the enumerator decided to spell it the way he thought it was pronounced, the variations could be endless. Since George E Villett is listed as a Canadian in the 1920 census, it's possible he and Kate came directly to California from Canada after the 1910 census was done, which could explain why he wasn't found in 1910.

The 1940 census won't become available to researchers until about 2012. By law, it is released 72 years from the date of enumeration to make sure that anyone who was on it will be either gone or too old to care if someone sees their name on a document showing where they lived 7 decades earlier.

For almost any other type of research, one almost has to go to the place where the person was known to have lived and do a manual search of the records. To hire it done tends to be quite expensive. If you're up for doing microfilm research, you could order microfilm of the area newspapers to see if you can spot her name, but if she was employed as a domestic, it's doubtful she would have been mentioned except for a marriage or death. I personally try to avoid microfilm readers because I tend to get migraines from the movement on the screen.

If you know anyone who knew her, you could have a sit-down with them and see what they remember about where she was, what she was doing, and who she associated with. That could help you pinpoint her whereabouts later on and make finding her a little easier.
I hope you find what you're looking for. Persistence pays off, if you can manage to deal with the frustration. Good luck.

Hi Claudia and thankyou!

I now think the Jennie must have changed her name to Genevieve as she became an adult - perhaps hoping to get into the movies or just to get away for her past?.....Its not a far cry from Jennie...and the age is correct!

Is there a 1940 or 50 census of CA to track her down or is there a way to find if she married one of the two Casement boys who would be her age or finding her death?

Where do I go from here I guess is the question? It gets hard as years hit closer to our own time!

Thank you so much for the clues.

Thank-you for your response. I'd be interested to know any
other information about the family you might know/have. My
mothers name is Betty Faye Brooks who also grew up in Lone
Pine and apparently had a relationship w/ Raymond Vincent
Montes just towards the end of high school. I beleive he is/was my brother, Luis Thomas Montes' father and maybe
mine (?), but do not know him...have never met him...I have
some old pictures of him & my mother from that time though.

I have since found his WWII draft registration for 1943. He was then living in Bishop, CA and working at the US Vanadium tungsten mine at Pine Creek. I found a notice in "Desert Magazine" for July 1944, that the Red Cross was seeking his whereabouts for his nephew in Lom, Norway, Nils Visdal. From another relative in Norway, I have found out that there is the belief that he was murdered. He had apparently saved up a stake and had plans to buy a hotel.
He had managed a small hotel in Seattle around 1920.

I am an Olivas and a Diaz mix. I remember eating at the TinRoof and going into Lasky's Radio shop in town. The pioneer families were close and some still try to remain so although it is difficult when the children all move away.

I have been photographing the tombstones at the cemetery and may have some that would interest you. Some can already be viewed at the GenWeb site Mt. Whitney Cemetery at the Tombstone Project.
Contact me if you wish.

Thanks for the information everyone....is there like a 1940 or 1950 census of CA? Now I believe she used the name Genevieve instead of Jennie Mae as she got older, perhaps she wanted to be in the movies or something....or it was a way of making her past seem better.....

I would love to see what happened to her, does she marry one of these Casement brothers?, etc.......Where do I go from here?

Thanks again
