For your research I would suggest trying to get hold of a book called "The
Boys in the Sky-Blue Pants" by Dorothy
Cragen. That will have a lot of the history of the Indian Wars and the relocation of the Indians. Also, I thought The Inyo Independent was the only newspaper operating at that time, but now I'm questioning my memory. Anyway, the Independent was printed in Independence, which was really the hub of activity then. The book I mentioned above talks above
California Infantry who were stationed at
Fort Independence and were originally sent to the valley because of troubles with the Indians.
