Surnames: Pierce Campbell
I have just found info about an ancestor's daughter (Margaret Pierce Campbell) that states she died in 1918 while living at the County Home in Inyo CO, near Big Pine (I think). I'm guessing that she might not have been buried in a public cemetery and I'm wondering if anyone knows of this Home or it's history, if it had it's own burying place, or how to find out more about it?

Hi,

My grandfather was Inyo County Supervisor 1920-1937. This home was at the north end of Big Pine and was the "County Farm" as it was called. It was in his supervisorial district. He frequently mentions his visits there in his diaries which I have. It was a farm for the poor and elderly where they could raise their own vegetables, meat, and be taken care of by attendants when needed. Kind of a different system than today. He often looked in on the folks there and provided materials for them. A few times, he also provided a bull or two for their meat animal raising. This was after your ancestor was there but the same kind of set up was involved. Mrs. Campbell might be buried in the Big Pine Cemetery as there was no cemetery at the farm. The county also provided for the burial of the folks probably with a headstone. You can call Brune Mortuary at (760)873-4266. They are very helpful and can probably look up the particulars of her burial, etc. I think they have the valley records back to 1910. This farm, by the way, because the Big Pine Care Center later on and recently closed and moved to Bishop as the Bishop Care Center. They might have some old records or could tell you where they are. The Big Pine Care Center will soon be torn down.
