I've hit a dead end on this and if anyone knows anything that can help me, I hope you will contact me. I'm on a Mac computer and for some reason not a single 'link' on the USGenWeb Imperial Co website will open up for me. They say they had a new 'obit' section I wanted to search, but an unable to do so.

Fisherman's Body Found in IID Canal

NILAND, June 1 - the body of Donald Benson, who drowned in the All American Canal Memorial Day was found Friday about one mile from the point where he fell into the water.
Dep. Coroner Richard Ramirez said an unidentified Filipino was the first person to spot Benson's body floating in the Coachella branch of the canal.
A fisherman from Los Angeles pulled the body to shore and Benson's stepfather, A.B. Clay, removed it from the canal.
Ramirez said Clay had been patrolling the canal banks since returning from Redlands Memorial Day after going there to inform Benson's pregnant wife of his death.
The body was removed to the Thoirnton-Mason Mortuary in Brawley and will be sent to the Emerson Funeral Home in Redlands today."

1900 Census

Question re the 1900 census that covers what is now Imperial County -
I realize Imperial Co. was not formed until 1907, and should thus be found on the San Diego County 1900 census films. Have checked them and fail to find any of the Imperial locations. Am I missing something? Any suggestions would be most apprecicated. The family "tradition" was that William BURCH and wife Ida (HAZELTON) and family were in Imperial County when William died there 1902. Ida opened a bakery about 1905 which she ran for three years. Do not know when she returned to Arizona from whence they came - only know we do find her on the Phoenix, Maricopa Co. AZ census in 1920.

George J. Guirsch

George Jeffrey Guirsch of Roseville died Jan. 15, 2002. He was 44.

He was born Sept. 8, 1957, in Brawley and was a Snap-On tool dealer in Davis, Dixon and Fairfield for eight years. He enjoyed woodworking, football, camping and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include two daughters, Michelle Marie Guirsch and Kristen Louise Guirsch of Meadow Vista; six siblings, Janet Hoffman of Vallejo, Julie Allison of Riverside, John Guirsch of San Jose, Joan Hossack of Orangevale, Laurie Huss of Roseville and Jean Louise Jeffress of San Francisco; his father, James Jeffress of San Jose; and his ex-wife, Kathleen Guirsch-Valeu of Meadow Vista.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Jane Jeffress.

A prayer service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at Calvary Cemetery Chapel in Sacramento, and burial will follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the George Jeffrey Guirsch Memorial Fund, for Michelle and Kristen Guirsch, U.S. Bank account 253450897710.

Chapel of the Valley mortuary in Roseville is assisting the family with arrangements.

I have an address in Heber, Imperial Co, CA that I would like to find a modern day location for.
I have a photo of four of my Ortiz Cousin's, Raphael, Fernando, Roberto & Miguel, dated May 14, 1947. Their father, my Uncle, Florentino Ortiz, has his address written on the back as Rt 2, Box 234, Heber, Calif. They evidently had a cattle farm as there are lots of dairy cows & milking going on in other pictures. With in a year after these pictures were taken. My uncle moved his family to Cuidad Obregon,Sonora, MX. Tio Florentino dies about 1957 & the family moves back to Calexico, Imperial Co, area. Cousin Rapheal joins the US Army & is honorably discharged, 1957ish & dies a few month after in a work related accident & is buried at Lemons-Wiley Cemetery as Ramon Rafeal Ortiz. It does not seem as the rest of his family is buried in Imperial Co.
If you can help on any of this, It sure would fill in areas of my families history.

Florentino Ortiz & Oscar Arce Families in Heber, Imperial Co, CA 1947ish

I have photo's dated May 14, 1947. With the address of Rt 2, Box 334, Heber, Calif. It is a photo of my four Otiz cousions, Rafael, Fernando, Roberto & Miguel, Sons of my uncle Florentino & Aunt Vicenta Ortiz.
I am looking for the families of Florentino Ortiz & his step son, Oscar Arce. As a small child, about the year 1947 or so, we recieved our first visit in Mazatlan, from my Uncle Florentino Ortiz & Aunt Vicenta Arce de Ortiz & family. They lived on a farm or ranch near Cuidad Obregon, Sonora. Oscar was Tia Vicenta's son from her previous marriage, which I have no information on. Florentino had had a farm near Calexico, CA but had just moved to Cuidad Obregon an had the farm/ranch there until about 1956/57. when he got sick & went to Guadalahara for treatment of cancer. My mother Maria Ortiz de Domingues & Tia Vicenta rented a house. Oscar Arce was the oldest & had run the farm. Oscar had half brothers, Rapheal, Fernando, Miguel and Roberto Otiz. The farm in Cuidad Obregon was on hard times by Tio Florentino death in 1957. The farm was sold in Sonora & everyone moved back to the Calexico area. Rapheal went into the US Army & was killed a few months after his diacharge. In a job related accident, as I reacll& buried in Calexico, CA. Tia Vicenta, Primo Oscar Arce, Fernando, Roberto & Miguel Otiz, have now all been lost tract of. I do not find them buried in CA. Oscar Arce Arce wifes name was Adriana. I do not know her maiden name. If you know of these people, please let me know.

In the January 1920 Census, at 380 Orange, El Centro, lived Alberta E. "Hodge", with her three children: Rudolph H., 12, Frank J, 10, Cecilia, 14. She was born Alberta E. Boyd in 1885 in Canada, and married Rudolph Herman Frowiss in 1906 in Los Angeles. She was in fact still married to Frowiss in 1920 in El Centro, and her children were all named Frowiss, and the year she died in March 1920, she was Alberta E. Frowiss in her obituary. So why were she and the children shown in the Census as Hodge, and her husband missing from the Census? Her husband Rudolph Frowiss worked for Hodges Loan & Auto. Why the mystery name Hodge for his wife and children? What were they hiding from? Perhaps an unsolved murder in Los Angeles in the 1905-1915 era might give the answer? I think I know the answer, the murderer and the murdered. Does anyone have an El Centro Directory from the 1919-1920 period?

James D. Sebrell was a druggist in Calexico around the 1910-1920's. He shows up as a widow in the 1920 Census for Imperial Co. I believe he lived in Riverside County in 1910 and subsequently married a Canadian immigrant thereafter named Ethel Boyd. She thus either died in Riverside or Imperial County between 1910 and 1920 as Ethel Sebrell. I'd like an obit. Conceivably they married shortly after 1900, where Ethel was single, age 19, in Riverside. Can't find them in the 1910 census at all, in either county.

Mrs. Ray Snider and daughter, Aileen of Brawley, CA was listed as grandnieces in the obituary of my 2nd great-grandmother Mrs. Mary [Snider] Hottle (age 101) b. 11 Nov. 1832 in Harrison County IN. d. 22 July 1934 in Wyaconda, Clark County, MO.
I think Ray was the son of one of Mrs. Hottle brother believed to be: Joseph Snider d. about 1909 in Lee County IA, George, Isaac, Philip, Jesse or William. William was listed as a survivor from Santa Cruze, CA (age 90).
The 1930 Census list a Ray Snider age 45 at 103 K St., Brawley, CA b. Iowa, Irene Snider age 46 b. Iowa, son Kermit Snider age 18 b. CA (may of died in 1966 from information in SSDI), and Aileen Snider age 5 b. CA.

Rulifson Callicotte DOD 22 Feb 1992, San Bernardino, CA. I think that her husband is John Callicotte, who died in Imperial County 13 May 1962. I am seeking places of burials, obituaries any information I can find. Last we heard of her in any records or word of mouth was back in the 1920's. Trying to find any family she might have. I checked with a library in San Bernardino and they didn't seem to find anything and suggested I checked in Imperial County.

Looking for information on Thomas Davenport, son of Ella Edna (Rogers) and Ed Davenport. Last known whereabouts Calipatria, California about 1955. (Until recently we did not know that Thomas was living in Calipatria about the same time as my father was in the navy and living in El Centro.) Thomas is listed on his mother's death certificate as next of kin. Eliza (Austin) Rogers lived with her daughter Ella after the death of her husband Thomas V. Rogers in Stickney, So. Dakota. She died about 1936. We are unable to locate any death/burial information on Eliza. We are assuming that Thomas took his mothers remains and belongings including the family bible to California upon her death. Birth certificates obtained from Mineral Point, Dodgeville, Wisconsin indicate that Ella sent verification of birth information-copies from the family bible to Dodgeville Wisc. so her brothers Thomas and Edwin Curtis Rogers could get birth certificates and to use them to apply for social security.
Any decendants of Thomas Davenport who could provide missing information for family genealogy can contact me at the above email address. We have quite a bit of information on Ella's ancestral family from Cornwall, England. Edwin Curtis Rogers was my paternal grandfather and one of Ella's younger brothers.

ROY E. GLOVER - OBITUARY

The Sun, San Bernardino, CA - April 5, 2005

As the Old and Grand Prix fires roared through San Bernardino County in 2003, ROY E. GLOVER could only watch and reminisce about the times he donned the distinct garb of a firefighter, and faced the perils of a blaze gone out of control. Glover fought fires in San Bernardino for 32 years and was ultimately recognized by the county as one of San Bernardino’s oldest living firefighters. Glover, a resident of San Bernardino for nearly all his life, died March 7 at his home. The cause of death was unavailable.

He was born May 6, 1915, in Brawley, CA. In 1935, he married the love of his life, Margaret Joan Glover, and the couple remained together for 62 years before she died in 1997.

Always one to be involved in his community, Glover joined the local fire department and dedicated himself to protecting others. He spent 32 years as a San Bernardino firefighter before retiring to become a part-time stockbroker and the manager of a securities firm. Glover was also a member of many local organizations, including the Elks Lodge, the Native Sons of the Golden West, the Al Malaikah Shrine, the San Bernardino Masonic Lodge and the California State Fireman’s Association. He was an avid churchgoer and attended services at Calvary Baptist Church in San Bernardino on a regular basis.

He is survived by his son Thomas Glover and daughter-in-law Carol of Jacksonville, Oregon, and a sister, Ethel Brace of Orangevale. Services were held at Calvary Baptist Church, and arrangements were handled by Bobbitt Memorial Chapel in San Bernardino. The family requests donations be made to the Tom Gould Memorial Fund, San Bernardino Professional Firefighters, P. O. Box 2703, San Bernardino, CA 92406.

Whether it was working for a landscaping company with his father or fixing cars in his garage on the side, JOE NAVARRO always found a way to provide the best for his family. “He was a very good provider for all of us,” said his wife, Lisa Navarro of San Bernardino. “He was the papa bear, and I was his honey bear. His family always came first.”

Navarro, a longtime resident of San Bernardino County, died of heart disease December 5 at his home in San Bernardino. He was 46. He was born November 10, 1958, in El Centro. He graduated from Brawley High School. He worked for more than 10 years with his father, Felipe Navarro, at a Corona landscaping company. He also worked on cars at home.

“Joe was a very talented mechanic. He could fix just about everything,” Lisa Navarro said. “If it didn’t’ work, he would make it work no matter what. He was our own personal handyman.” In 1983, a mutual friend introduced him to his future wife, Lisa. They were married in 2003.

Navarro enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing cards, watching courtroom dramas or treating his family and friends to karaoke renditions of his favorite Spanish music classics. “He loved singing on that karaoke microphone,” Lisa Navarro said. “He had an extremely beautiful singing voice.”

Other survivors include three daughters, Letecia Navarro and Priscilla Lemos, both of San Bernardino, and Chastity Garcia of Fremont, CA; a son Eric Saucedo of San Bernardino; a sister Anita Navarro of San Bernardino; and three nieces, Yolanda Rosales, Yolanda Rivera and Evianna Navarro, all of San Bernardino. Services were held. Arrangements were handled by Green Acres Mortuary of Bloomington.

On one of the death records websites I found that Ross Woodward had died in Imperial Co. on Feb. 22, 1942 at the age of 66. He was born in TX in 1875. At one time his wife Grace was the Postmistress in Oatman, AZ; and he had been an assayer and prospector in AZ and NV. Does any one have any information on him or his wife? (The 1930 AZ census shows Grace as being 48 years old.)

The 1930 Mohave Co., AZ census indicates a Taylor M. Woodward, age 23. The Cochise Co., AZ census indicates a Grace D. Woodward, age 23. Could these be children of this couple?
