Unfortunately my Uncle Bob passed away when he was 43. I have located a few cousins, and know one knew I even existed. From the obit. you sent me I have looked on Facebook and I think I have found my 1/2 sisters children. I am going to message them and hopefully I get a response. I want them to have the pictures I have of their mother...copies that is. Going back to my cousins they said the only thing they knew is that he lived in Mexico. Does this spell "dysfunctional"?? My dad was a rolling stone!!

I think there is a mix up and I want to clear this up. I`m sure the railroad may have thought I was trying to seek benefits. This is why I called the San Diego County for information. If my dad didn`t pass away in Ca. then I`m stuck. If he died in Mexico then I have to figure out who or where I can get a death certificate.

This is why I posted this, hoping someone that knew him or something about him would answer. I got a letter from a senior care facility. I called this place and the person I need to talk to was either in a meeting or on sick leave. I think may think I`m going to sue them. I have decided to drive down there unannounced.

I just want to settle the confusion because my brother did die at a senior care facility but not the one that sent me the letter. I have also contacted San Diego County, and they could not find my father listed on any sites. The county has a detective that looks for relatives when one has passed away. My brother and my dad were always in El Centro, I had searched to find know one. I thought they had moved way down to Mexico as know one knew anything. I`m hoping the railroad can tell me where he died, then I can get a death certificate. This is why I am so confused.

Was the letter from the Social Security Administration? or someone else?

The Social Security Administration could have mixed up your brother's death info, couldn't it? They only go by the information that they receive. They wouldn't generate death info themselves.

Who died on October 19, 1989 then?

It's confusing, huh!?

Contacting Jean would be your best bet. I'm sure she would be open to just telling you your father's death date.

I think you should try again with the Railroad Retirement Board. I think you have enough info for a search. Their website has:

"In some cases, if that number [SSN] is not available, having the employee's full name, including middle name or initial, and complete dates of birth and death may be of some help in determining whether we have any records of that person. However, in dealing with relatively common surnames, it is usually not possible to make a positive identification without the employee's SSN."

website: http://www.rrb.gov/mep/genealogy.asp

I would use the death date they gave you in May.

The links at the Mormon site are the good resources, not the site itself (in this case.)

One group had a library archive which includes employee records and a railroad newsletter/magazine. The actual info is not online, however.

Here's a possibility: Researching the Southern Pacific Railroad (not the official records since you already tried that.) I'm thinking that perhaps there was a newsletter with obituaries? or an "alumni" association with data on its members?

This page has good links:
https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Southern_Pacific_Rail...

I found those articles too. He was also a Motorman for San Quentin Prison. Apparently he lost control and 2 men were killed. Maybe this is why relatives marked him as the black sheep of the family. I recently found 3 cousins of which I never knew existed, and all the stories match.

He worked for the Southern Pacific Railroasd and retired from there.

His parents were from Denmark, Christian and Johanna Toft.
My brother was cremated so know cemetery listing, as I have the ashes.
His parents were buried in Contra Costa County, Ca.

All of the information is correct except the death record. He worked for the railroad. I called them and they said 1989 but couldn`t tell me where or the reason of his death.

My brother passed away in May of this year, so I think death records got confused as my brother was on disability on my dad`s retirement pension.
