I am searching for the John G. Ray family that setteled in Humbolt County in the mid to late 1800's. John G. Ray owned a hotel until his death in 1888. His three oldest sons, John, William and James, setteled in Shelter Cove sometime between 1853-55. I am related to his forth child, Robert M. Ray. Robert M. Ray married Rosina Dennes and had a ranch in Garberville. I know that there is a Ray family plot on the ranch, but I do not know who is buried on it. John G. Ray's fifth child, Tom, I know nothing about. His last two children, Hattie and Mary, I also know very little about. If you have any information on this family, or know of someone related to them, please let me know. Thank you!

I'm looking for any information on the marriage, parents/siblings/children of John J. & Nora (Moynahan)Johnson- my ggrandparents. In 1900 (US Census-Eureka,Ward 5, Roll86, Book2,pg100a, house 324 "no street laid out"), they were living in Eureka with their 4 living children (Edward, Andrew, May & Helen - and 2 other children were no longer living). John was from Finland and Nora from County Cork, Ireland and the info I have says they each came to US about 1885/1886; married abt 1889-90. By 1907, they had moved to SF. I have no info on daughter May (b Feb 1896)after the 1900 census record - could she have died between 1900-1907 in Eureka? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Seeking death and burial of Thomas UNDERWOOD, living in 1880 Mad River

I have been tracking my great-great grandfather for the last two years and have finally pinned him down in Humboldt Co., California. Thomas UNDERWOOD is living with the COULTER family. I have not figured out who Olive is quite yet, but the ancestors I have been tracking do have olives in their family tree, not to mention more than a few nuts! :-)

I would love to find a death and burial for Thomas UNDERWOOD in Humboldt County, California. He appears to have never returned to his family in Joplin, Jasper Co., Missouri, although both he and his wife list themselves as married on the 1880 census. Ergo, I don't think it was a simple case of abandonment.

Their son, also named Thomas, is living in Dow's Prairie, Humboldt Co., California. I have been able to identify the family connection from this USGenWeb site: http://ca-files.biofiles.us/Humb.645-695.htm

The William in the narrative for James Underwood is my great-great grandfather's eldest brother. His widow, Matilda Underwood, is living in Mad River next door.

Many thanks for your kind assistance,
Christy

I have Eliz. b.30 Jan 1854 in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada (maiden name Simmons, parents Benjamin Simmons and Margaret McGeorge). She was the wife of Thomas Milligan, Humboldt County's first blacksmith who was in the dreying and express business. Thomas died in 1908 and is buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Rohnerville. But I cannot find anything showing Elizabeth's date of death, remarriage, or anything else. I do have a copy of a news clipping showing she belonged to the Grandmother's Club in Fortuna. Any help anyone can give me would be appreciated. Lavinia Milligan Sala, Johnson City, TN

Finding death info/certs 1920-1930

I have been on the track of a missing GGGranduncle, and I think I have found him in Humboldt Co, but I know nothing about hunting in CA. Are there resources available for Humboldt Co deaths between 1920 and 1930? And where can I order a death cert? I checked the GenWeb site for the county, but did not find out where to look.

I suspect that his death cert will probably be mostly 'unknowns', so if there are any death records available short of ordering the cert, that would do me just fine. Any look-ups would be really appreciated.

His name was Ephraim H. Hoover, and he was b 1838 in Davidson Co, NC. He seems to have bought some land in Humboldt Co in 1876. He appears in the 1880 census, alone, as 'hunter and trapper' in Powellville, Humboldt Co. He appears again in 1900 at age 62 in Vandusen Twp, boarding with a family of unrelated Smiths. He appears in the 1910 at 71 as a boarder with one unrelated man, 62-yr-old Paul Heryford?. Then in the 1820, he is 82, and in Eureka at the County Hospital. He is consistently single, and I know of no children.

You can see why I figure his actual death cert information will be 'name, age, place and cause of death, and then unknown, unknown, unknown'. Unless he talked endlessly about his childhood, noone giving information for his death cert would have known anything about him.

Thanks for any advice on finding out when, where, how he died, and perhaps where he was buried. To my mind, one of the important parts of family history research is to find and *include* those relatives that may not be remembered by anyone else.... They're still family.

Linda S

Humboldt Standard
Aug. 7, 1924

Many Attend Rites For Will Sweasey

ROHNERVILLE, Aug. 7 – The funeral service for William Sweasy, who died so suddenly last Saturday evening, was held at the funeral parlors in Fortuna Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock; interment was at the old Rohnerville cemetery.

Many friends of the pioneer from all parts of the county were present. Sweasy’s death was a shock to this family and friends as he had been in his usual health. He was around town all day on Saturday, not complaining of any illness. In the evening he told his wife he had a pain in his stomach. Later she went to his chair to speak to him and found him dead. He was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Sweasy, early settlers in Hydesville. His mother died six years ago, and his father, at the age of 93, died at his home in Eureka about one year ago. Surviving him are three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Bullard, Mrs. Ellen Foss and Mrs. Daisy Nelson, his wife and three children, Mrs. Ralph Drever of Myers, William Sweasy, Jr., of Scotia and Byron Sweasy of Nevada and three grandchildren.
Was the Humboldt Standard published in Eureka or ??? A relative sent me an obit with the date written in. Looks like the month is 4 or 7 and the day is 14 or 19 in 1923. It doesn't have where the paper was published. My relative said she got it from either the Eureka Library (she is not sure of the exact name of the library) or the Humboldt Historical Society. She doesn't know which. She said she called and they faxed the obit to her. Would someone help me to learn which place might have done this. I would like to have my source for the death as accurate as possible.
Thank you,
Ann Parsons
Alamogordo, NM USA

Henry Clay Morse biography

Henry Clay Morse biography
Humboldt Co., Calif., newspaper clipping
Undated, Notes on clipping: “The Trail Back, 7-120”

H.C. Morse, blacksmith
was also early
real estate salesman

H.C. Morse, grandfather of Galen McCray of Miranda, first settled in California in Kern county in 1849. It was 1864 when he moved to Humboldt county to become one of Garberville’s earliest settlers.
Morse operated a blacksmith shop on what was then Main Street (Redwood Drive) and also engaged in the real estate business selling lots to such pioneers as Jacob Garber, P.G. Wood, William Amberson and many others.
The blacksmith shop was on Morse’s property at what is now Redwood Drive and Church Street, and running north therefrom. He also owned land ¾ mile up Sprowl Creek and up the center of the South Fork of the Eel River to about the present site of Benbow Dam.
Two aunts and an uncle of McCray’s were born in Garberville between 1870 and 1877. McCray’s grandmother, Mary Ellen Worden Morse, who came to the area with a brother, died in 1878. According to information passed down in the family, whe was the first person buried in the Garberville Cemetery and her husband gave the land for the cemetery site. He had her gravestone, of cast iron, made in Missouri and shipped to Garberville. Today it still marks the gravesite.
George Worden, Sr., had the first mill in the area on Worden Creek, also known as Mill Creek.
McCray’s mother attended school in Garberville between 1874 and 1882.
LAND SALES
According to records in the County Recorder’s Office in Eureka, H.C. Morse’s first real estate transaction was in 1865. Among the many property transfers made by him were the following:
H.C. Morse to J.C. Garber - Feb. 27, 1876, a lot on Main Street starting at a redwood post on an alley on Main Street.
H.C. Morse to P.G. Wood - Sept. 17, 1878, house and lot on Main Street, northwest of house 30’ East 100’ North 30’ the West 100’.
H.C. Morse to a Mr. Mudd - Dec. 9, 1878, S ½ of SE ¼ and SW ¼, Sec. 2. TWS 4, Rge. 3 East, 120 acres for $600.
H.C. Morse to Wm. Amberson - May 28, 1879, From the NW Corner of Morse Blacksmith Shop, East 100’, South 50’, West 100’ then North 50’. $750.
H.C. Morse to Yates - May 19, 1879, Main and Second Street NW Corner then East 100’, South 50’, West 100’, North 50’. $1,000.
H.C. Morse to Dudley - Jan. 1880, White Oak Tree on Main Street North 100’ to a post, Right Angles East 150’, South 100’, West 150’, $600.
Still other transfers listed were H.C. Morse to Dale, Aug 11, 1879; M.C. Morse to Harris, July 1, 1878; H.C. Morse to Marsh, Mar. 1, 1880; H.C. Morse to Bell, July 5, 1880 and H.C. Morse to McCharles, July 26, 1880.
County records also show that H.C. Morse bought land and buildings from: John Dale, Sept. 14, 1976 [1876]; Wm. Bunnell, Oct. 24, 1876; Wm. Cornelius, Nov. 4, 1876; John Hart, Dec. 9, 1878; H.N. Yates, May 19, 1879; John Marsh, May 13, 1880.

[After the 1880 census in South Fork, Humboldt, California, H.C. Morse married, 2nd, his housekeeper Eliza Jane (Caldwell) McCartney, the widow of John B McCartney. These are my persons of interest. Eliza and Henry had no children and later divorced.

Leslie married a Snow, from what I was informed, plus others. She had several children born in Eureka. One contacted me about four years past, but never got back to me. Jacquilyn Lea (Stevenson) Woodard died in 1995 in Eureka. She had three sons in Eureka. Leslie and Jacquilyn's mother died in Eureka. Her married name was Reid. First name Iris. She died in 1989. I guess what I am asking is, where Iris is buried as well as Jacqilyn buried and if Jacquilynn had an obit and lastly if Leslie is yet alive and well. Thank you. Oh yes, Leslie's maiden name was Music. Again, thank so much for looking.

I had been searching for a lost uncle. Thanks to this query I found he had died. He died in Humboldt County, Eureka, CA. On his death cert. that I sent for it states unknown to most. Who do I contact to find out if he had any documents or possessions. He was cremated at Ocean View Cemetary Sept. 14, 89 and Pierce Chapel is listed. He must have had something that would help in my research and also I know he had been married at one time and had 2 or 3 children. They probably don't even know he has died.
Help!!

Ernest Brock

Ernest Brock and Mary Elizabeth Woods of South Fork had a child - Henry Floyd Brock on 10/14/1887. Henry died in Eureka 7/31/1977 - a long time engineer in the area. Henry was raised in his childhood by his "grandfather" James Wood at South Fork. Henry is shown in the 1900 census as Woods "grandson". I do not believe that Ms. Woods or Ernest Brock were ever married. Does anyone have any info on Ernest Brock? Where was he born and where did he live? Thanks for any info on Ernest Brock.

Found Kneeland spelled Knuland and has Iaqua listed with it. Found Rio Dell as Eagle Prairie with Bear River. Also I'm not sure how to find Bridgeville. There is a listing for Three Cabins but I don't know where that is either. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I can't find her listed on any census records but I know her son came back to Eureka to see her before he married in 1903. I am assuming she remarried and knowing that will help to find out what happened to her. Is there a source for looking up marriages during this time period? I know they were strong Catholics. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Roy(my Great Grandfather) was born in Between 1875 and 1878 and orphand around 1879 in New Brunswick. He was raised by Lucinda, who might have been an aunt or sister. They arrived in time for the 1880 census in Humboldt County California. They didn't arrive by boat in any major port.
The family name is now Mcknight but that might the adopted name, not the one he was born with. He's listed as Roy E. Wiley with his adopted mother as Lucinda Wiley(married with no husband listed) in the 1880 census. And Roy E. Mcknight in the 1900 census. She is in the 1910 Census as married to William Mcknight.
I am spefically looking for a train passanger list, adoption papers, death notice, guardianship papers or anything that lists Roy's parents names and/or birth date.

The last posting I find for her on RootsWeb dates from 1999. Can someone please research deaths and obituaries to confirm if this is true and help me to connect with her next of kin. She is a very distant cousin but more importantly she has successfully uncovered valuable research from New York that should be shared.

She also had a lifelong interest in education, taking computer classes and teaching Spanish to her neighbors and friends. She had a passion for gardening and the outdoors. One of her favorite pastimes was watching migrating whales from her oceanfront home. Above all, she valued time spent with her grandchildren.

Hilda is survived by three sons, John, James, and Daniel Saveliff; and seven grandchildren, Katie, Maddie, Julia, Michael, Mason, Morgan, and Kili Saveliff.

My husband's grandparents, Christian Nissen Kolbeck and Catherine Dorthea Bondeson Kolbeck, finally settled down and lived and are buried in Ferndale, Humboldt county California back at the turn of the century. We are looking for our lost third and probably fourth cousins! Mrs. Kolbeck had two sisters, Mrs. Jorgen Christiansen and Mrs. Louis Smith of Ferndale, California. One brother L.P. Bondeson lived in Metropolitan (California?) and the other brother lived in Montana. We would love to know more about our family.

Isaac Nichols, Cordelia Crismon, George Nichols, Fredrick Nichols

I am searching for any info on Isaac Nichols and wife Cordelia Crismon. His obit says he was born in Baltimore, MD, came out west at an early age. He married twice in Oregon and once in CA. I have him born in a range from 1833-1834 depending on what document you read. I have his death certificate, two marriage certificates and many military affidavits. His death certificate states his father's name was Isaac Nichols but list his mother's name as unknown. He died 24 June 1928 in Myrtle Point, Coos, Oregon. Cordelia and Isaac married 28 Jun 1874 in Eureka, Humboldt, CA. He had one son, Fredrick from his second marriage. His first son, George, with Cordelia was born 9 Mar 1874 in Humboldt county, CA. George is my great grandpa. I have been told her was born in Arcata, Ca but would like to verify that info. From Humboldt county they moved to Smith River, Del Norte, CA and had 13 more children. I have copies of the census for Smith River from 1880 on. Cordelia Crismon was born in Maries county, MO 1 Jan 1855. She died 8 Mar 1931 in Myrtle Point, Coos, Oregon. I have her with her parents in Oregon in 1860 and 1870 census. In the 1880 census her parents were in Sutter county, CA census. She had an uncle, Archibald Crismon, in Oregon in the 1860 cenusus, he later moved to Humboldt county, CA. I would like any other info on this family if I can find it; I appreciate your help...Thanks

Query: Charles Johnston family Eureka c1884-1930

I am looking for a family of Johnstons who moved from New Brunswick, Canada to Eureka, CA around 1884.

They are:

Charles Johnston - born c.1846 New Brunswick. Was in St. Andrews, N.B. in the 1881 census. Appears in 1910 & 1920 census in Eureka, CA. Occupation - shoemaker. In 1930, he is listed as a shoemaker who had his own shop. Immigrated 1882-1884

Elizabeth Johnston born c. 1845 New Brunswick. Appears in all of the above census returns with her husband. Maiden name is possibly Colwell/Caldwell.

Their children are:

Robert Johnston born 17 Mar 1872, New Brunswick. Married in Eureka, March 17, 1896 to Ethel Florence Chase (also of NB). Robert & Ethel had one son Chester Johnston born 30 Sep 1898. Their family appears in Eureka Ward 5 for 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930 census returns.

Otis Johnston born May 1873, New Brunswick. Otis appears with his family in the 1881 Canadian census in St. Andrews but haven't found him after that.

Hiram Justus Johnston born Sep 1876, New Brunswick. Appears in 1881 Canadian census. Died on 26 Jan 1875, Eureka CA.

Ethel Florence Johnston born Sep 1878, died Jun 1880, both in NB.

There would seem to be one more child, since, in the 1910 census, Elizabeth Johnston records herself as the mother of 5 children, 3 living. Also, in the St. Andrew's New Brunswick paper, there is a personal entry of Chas. Johnston and his daughter from Eureka visiting back home in 10 Nov 1892. Since their only known daughter was dead by then, it seems that the other child could be a girl.

Does anyone know this family?
