It was very possible. Depending on where they were in Glenn County the mileage is very doable. It would have been an overnight trip, but what better reason to visit? They would also had to ferry across the Sacramento River to get from the then Colusi County to Butte County. Glenn County was formed from Colusi County 11 Mar 1891. Colusi County encompassed current Colusa, Glenn, and a portion of Tehama counties. Ferries dotted the river and commonly transferred people, animals, and freight from one side to the other.

I am looking for information on a flood on Stoney Creek in the early 1900's. A family record states that "the Broman family, John, Maria, Louis, Sophia, Emil and there families took up land along Stoney Creek. Jim Broman recalls that Louis & Inga's farm got flooded by the creek and the family had to move in John and Maria". I am wondering if anyone would have record or know where to find about any floods in this area. The flood would have occured before 1910. Probably between 1904-1910. It may have been a year or so early, but most likely after 1904. Any information would be extreamly helpful.
Thank-you
Juliann

Well there could be several reasons why he lost irrigation or it could be even the fact the well went dry or even if he grazed cattle on the winter grasses, then you could be right that it was a drought. If you want to reconstruct what happened to your grandfather, some more time periods would be helpful. When he came to the area and when he lost the ranch and where it was located. Did he lose it shortly after he came or was he there for a few years? There were periods of migration you can tie in to and they are still going on, although mostly out of CA now. I have one great uncle that went to CA (from IA) in the 30s and he was a lawyer for the migrant workers. He helped get laws in place to help them. Part of that family stayed in CA. Another line moved from MO to Mad River CA in the late 20s. That was a young family and I am still not sure why that family moved to CA but they stayed. The Merrill line came in the 1800s and settled near Chico, they came all the way from the east coast. One brother was a miner. They were not the only family from their town to go to CA. You might try looking at where your grandfather came from and what other people from his area moved to CA too. Seldom did a single person relocate but I wouldn't say never. Looking at the complete historical picture will help you.

You may or may not be able to reconstruct exactly what happened but you should be able to use circumstantial evidence to get a picture. Even today the irrigation districts are very powerful and you do not want to get on their bad side. I lived in the central valley south of Stockton and have heard a variety of tales, some quite ugly. Of course this is unlikely nowadays but it did happen and it is part of history.

Good luck!

Kurt,
To this day there are no "farms" in CA, they are ranches. The description of farming of old included what you consider ranching. Both farms and ranches needed irrigation water. Ranching required the growing of hay which required irrigation. Many ranches grew tree crops in addition to the food required by their stock. Willows is still a big cowboy town according to my girlfriend.

GGGGrandfather Alexander Hite was born in VA, moved to OH and then moved to Sacramento County in 1853 with his family. They had a stock farm there as well as Alexander running the stage route over the pass. His son Absalom George moved to Glenn County after he was married in 1866 and had a large farm/ranch there. He died in 1906 in Willows.

Sounds like your grandfather would have been very interested in the the area from what you say. Hope this is of interest to you.

In Glenn County this was carried on by the privately owned SVI (Sacramento Valley Irrigation) which was developing an extensive irrigation system for primarily Glenn and Colusa Counties.

After a few years this SVI was not doing so well, so the irrigation district became a public agency, the Glenn-Colusa Irrigation Districtd.

My father went to work for the Glenn-Colusa in about 1919 if I recall the story correctly, and continued for many years there, retired about 1960 maybe. By that time the Glenn COlusa was known as the world's largest gravity flow irrigation project in the world, providing water for some 245,000 acres. That has probably been exceded by this time. Their gravit flow system pumps water from the Sacramento River at a spot just north of Hsamilton City (also in Glenn County), then flows without additional pumping to cover this extensive acreage. Major crop in rice, which requiresd large amounts of flowing water.

Anyway, people came to Glenn County from primarily the Midwest, to claim the cheap land, and relatively inexpensive water -- any many local residents today have their roots in that migration.

Kennett Allard

Thank you Kennett,
I appreciate your reply. I am not sure I understand it.
What I understand from family history is that my grandfather went west to California from Wisconsin to have a Ranch and supposedly had one. Not sure if it was in Willows or nearby, but his daughter was born in Williow.
It sounds like the history in what you describe was of farming, and this is not something he would be interested in. What was the relation ship between the ranchers and the farmers? Was there a ratio?
In the SVI was there any need for electricians or carpenters? I am not sure what incentives the SVI would have gave to inspire him to make the move unless it was cheap land.
How where people recruited to the area?
Thank You
Best regards
Kurt

Thank You Karen,
I had no idea there was a dual meaning of ranch and farm. Seems confusing to me. I find it interesting again because I now remember being told that his ranch went dry and he lost it.......And now I don't know what that means. In my mind I thought it meant they had a drought.....But if they had irrigation I don't see how that is possible.

Thank You
again
Kurt

I have corresponded with a couple of people regarding the William Walker Marshall line, but I don't recognize your e-mail. I will share any data that you need. I have WW Marshall's ancestry data going back into Tennessee in the early 1800's. I don't have any photos of my Marshall family from William Walker Marshall's generation or his wife, childen, etc., but would love to have some. I would be more than happy to compensate you for copies of the photos. Thanks for writing. Looking forward to hearing from you.
BIRTH OR BAPTISM RECORD LOOKUP-FRANK (LAST NAME)

May 3rd, 2007 Thursday 10:00 p.m.

I am looking at the counties surrounding Butte County in case the children were born outside of Butte County.

Can somebody lookup birth & or baptism records for me please. I am looking for my grandmothers side of the family. The last name they were using on the 1880 Census for Oregon City in Butte County in CA was FRANK. On the 1st 10 or so pages of this census it says City Of Cherokee. My family is Portuguese so there is a possibility they are using the last name spelled FRANCK, FRANCISCO, FRANCISCA, FRANCA, MARTIN OR HENRIQUES. Or the last name spelling starting with FRA. HENRIQUES is the maiden name of the mother Mary. I was told that Portuguese people usually didn't use there birth names when they came to the U.S., that is why I have given a few differant spellings. The mother & fathers names are Martin & Mary both born in Portugal or The Azores.

Here are the childrens names.
Frank, Mary Born CA (Most Likely instead of MA) 1875
Frank, Frank (Yes they named one of there children Frank Frank) Born 1877
Manuel Born 1879 or 1880

There are possibly 4 other children that were born after the 1880 census. Josephine, Alice Rena & May/Mae and Martin. My grandmother Alice Rena Frank (Franck) married my grandfather Gus Foster Rowe approx. 1908.

I have been looking for my grandmothers side of the family for 14 months now with no luck. I am grasping at straws and loosing hope of ever finding them and would appreciate any help.

You can email me at tex61@bellsouth.net

THANK YOU VERY MUCH,
KIM ROWE

Hi,
Sorry, but I don't know anything about Margaret's ancestors. I only know that she was born in 1838 in Ireland, married a Burr (or Bar) and then married Nathaniel Brothers. They were married in Butte County, CA on Sept. 22, 1859. He had two children before the marriage (the first born in Australia). They had at least four together. Most of the children went to Glenn County, Lake County or Yolo County.
Togin Cassell
Napa, CA
