Obituary - Name of Newspaper?

Could anyone tell me the name of the possible newspaper that may have a couple obituaries regarding Thomas D DAVIS (b. 1869 Jefferson County, OH / d. 26 Jan 1947 Fresno County, California and his wife, Laura "Lottie"/"Lotta" (WESTLAKE) DAVIS (b. 1876 Belmont County, Ohio / d. 20 May 1929 Fresno County, California?

I believe their children are Earl D., Laura Jane (may have married a John Harold SIMERAL), and Helen E. DAVIS.

I realize the town name is necessary. Judging from the US Federal Census, he resided in Township 15 (1920) and Township 17 (1930). Would someone also be able to explain what township - town/city this may define?

Carol Miller

Over the years we have lost contact with an aunt, Carol E. MILLER, born Dec. 21, 1923 in California to Edward A. and Florence (Coats) Miller. It is our belief that she never married and her last address was 3785 E. Weldon, Fresno. The reverse directory shows a different family at that address, today. How can I learn if she sold the house or if, at her death, it went to probate?
She is not listed in the CA Death Index, so I am hoping that she is still alive. Her only sibling, Benton Ellis MILLER was killed in 1947-48 Germany while serving in the Army Air Corps. We have been told that he was buried in Forest Lawn Cem. in L.A., but cannot find him there. Can you help me with this search?
Thank you in advance,
Julie Collins
Ca.

Mathilda had brothers and sisters that also lived in Kingsburg named Nelson, but our family has lost touch with that branch. We have also lost touch with the Abrahamson branch. Both families were originally from Nebraska, before that, Illinois, and a generation before that, Sweden.

Jerry Ryan (1836-1909) and Catherine Neary Ryan (1841-1906)

I have some papers for the Ryan family, early settlers of Fresno. Hope this helps someone.

Jeremiah Ryan was born in Ireland in 1836, ex-confederate soldier from Texas, moved to Fresno in 1873. The notes state that he married Catherine Neary in Texas prior to the Civil War although the birthdates of the children are somewhat later.

Jerry and Kate had 10 children:
Johanna b. 1873, died infancy
Peter, died 1897
William H. died 1918
Jerry Ryan Jr.
Morris
Charles
Louis Florian Ryan, b. Fresno, 1882, d. Fresno 1947 married Lilian Kane of Carlin Nevada, had 2 children, Mary Laurentia (b. 1908, d. 1992, no descendants) and Louis K.
Mrs. M. Y. Hinkle of San Francisco (Aunt Jo, the beauty, cocktail created for her at the Waldorf Astoria when she visited NY c. 1895)
Mrs. E (? might be Z or L) W. Gradner of San Francisco

From someone's genealogy notes: "The beginning of Fresno, May 10, 1872. The Central Pacific Railroad formally located the town of Fresno. The earliest religious service in what is now Fresno is dated Oct 21, 1873. It is the Baptismal entry of Johanna Ryan, daughter of Jerry Ryan and hs wife, Kate Neary Ryan. "

The following sounds like an obituary: "Jerry Ryan, ex-confederate soldier, railroad and hotel man, came to this city 35 years ago from Texas where he settled soon after coming to this country from Ireland. Born in Ireland August 15, 1836, 73 years ago and settled in Houston Texas where he was married just prior to the Civil War. Serving with Seventh Texas Cavalry of Rangers, captured at Shiloh. After the war, moved to Oregon. later in 1873 he came to Fresno. Ryan was first section foreman for the Southern Pacific in this locality and by his industry and shrewdness soon accumulated enough money to start him in the hotel business. Was very successful in this, made such wise investments in real estate that he became one of Fresno's wealthiest citizens."

Taken from a possible obituary: "Mrs. Catherine Ryan died March 15, 1906, about age 65 when she died. She was the mother of ten children, firstborn died in infancy, another, Peter died 9 years ago (1897?) and other children still living: William H. Ryan, Jerry Ryan Jr., Morris Ryan, Charles Ryan, and Louis Ryan, all of Fresno, Mrs. M. Y. Hinkle (Josephine?) and Mrs. E. (? could be Z or L) W. Gradner of San Francisco.

Letter from Grace Ryan, providing info from Sutro Library in San Francisco about the Irish immigration of the Ryan family:
"On April 17, 1847, the Undine sailed from Limerick to NY. Among the passengers were: John Ryan, 32, farmer, Mary Ryan, 30, spouse, Jeremiah, 12, Bridget, 10, John, 5, and Honora, infant." On a recent trip to Ireland, Grace had learned that the Ryans originally settled in Cork, then moved north to Tipperary.

Jeremiah was in the Confederate Army and may have had a son, Jeremiah Jr, known as Dutch.
Has anyone out there ever heard of a Garrett Investigation Services, INC. It was supposed to have its main office in Denver with an office in San Francisco. This would probably have been in the 1930's. The following persons were involved in the Agency: Edward P. Garrett, Lorena M. Garrett, Royce E. Garrett and O. Douglas Tripp. This information came from a book purported to be in the possession of Ruby Wedeking and said to be a book written by Edward P. Garrett. I lost track of Edward P. and Lorena M. Garrett after a trip taken in 1931. I cannot find them on the 1930 census anywhere. Any help would be appreciated.

Jan 1966 in the Fresno area, and his wife Kate (possibly Kathryn or Katherine) b. abt. 1888 and died abt. Dec 1980 in the Fresno Area.

According to the only other infomation I have on this family, there were two daughters, possibly from a previous marriage for Kate: Letha (who married a JONES) and Vera Juanita (who married a Quesada). I believe both of the daughters lived in the Fresno area also, but am not sure of this. I've been told that one, if not both, of the daughters have passed away. I do not have dates on these ladies.

I am trying to locate obituaries especially on Henry and Kate, as well as cemetery information on any/all of the people mentioned.

Looking for info on a William Brennan. I don't KNOW that he died in Fresno, I just know that his social security death benefits went there around 1980. I know this isn't much info. He was my grandfather and has become the mystery of our family. He left my grandmother when my father was only 5. Rumor is he got remarried more than once, and possibly changed his name, although not legally, a time or two, but kept the same SSN.

Fresno County School Photos -- 1949 & 1952

Greetings from East Tennessee!

A friend and I have a hobby where we buy photos and paper memorabilia that we believe we can find a proper home for someplace. Our requirements are minimal investment and maximum hope for placement. I guess it's like taking care of foster kids, in a way.

In a batch of material we recently acquired from a man in our area, we found a photograph of the 5th grade class at San Joaquin School in San Joaquin, California, dated October 21, 1952. We also have the Pomona School, Fresno County, 3rd/4th/5th Grades dated September 29, 1949.

Do you have a local area school archives or similar entity that might be interested in these photos? Is someone you love in one of the photos? I've attached a copy for your review.

If you have an interest in these photos, please contact me directly at the e-mail address below.

(Ms.) Billie R. McNamara
Knoxville, TN
E-Mail: easttngenealogy@gmail.com

MOORE to Miss S.A. HILBOURN, of this place: MADERA, FRESNO CO., CAL., Jan. 7th., 1877.} This town is only two months old. We have not had time to talk up church and school yet, but the spring will make an opening for such improvements. There are 12 or 15 families here, two hotels and one boarding house, two saloons, (quite well patronized), one Doctor and one Lawyer, are all of the professional community we can boast of at present. The name of the place "Madera" is the Spanish for floating timber or lumber, which is very appropriate, as it is the terminus of a flume for floating lumber out of the mountains to the Railroad, a distance of 50 miles or more. This flume is sort of an experiment, but with good management, must be a success, as there is a greater demand for lumber than the company has been able to fill so far. There is a million feet of lumber in the yard now, and are receiving every day, or rather night, as it takes the lumber about 12 hours to come the 50 miles or more. This flume is sort of an experiment, but with good management, must be a success, as there is a greater demand for lumber than the company has been able to fill so far. There is a million feet of lumber in the yard now, and are receiving every day, or rather night, as it takes the lumber about 12 hours to come the 50 miles, and they take it out of the flume in the night, as the ice from the mountains get among the lumber and makes the work so much colder. The workman take it out with their hands, and it is cold work having the hands in ice-water all day. Dr. Lee would be a good person to tell you of the workings of flumes, as he has been in this country. The town is on the Railroad, so I feel quite at home to hear the cars in the night. We have only three trains of a night, but that is company for me, particularly if you are waiting on the sick as I have been for nearly three months past. Ed. was taken with a chill in October, followed with some sort of fever that he could not seem to recover from, so over a month ago he got lame and and his limbs, from the knees down, felt as though they were asleep and as though they were in cold water. He went to Merced to the Doctor, and after a week could not help himself up or down stairs, or get his clothes on alone, would fall down and had to be helped up, and would have fallen down stairs if a chinaman had not caught him. I went to him. After a week the Doctor said we might come home, and advised a galvanic battery in water. We were boarding, and everything was so unhandy. We got into our own house a month ago, unfinished as it was, with the carpenters working over and around all for two weeks, to get it habitable for the winter. He seemed to get better for some days, then the cords in the calf of the left leg got sore and painful. He had to keep his bed for 10 or 12 days. Finally one night he got so sick. Frank telegraphed for the Doctor. By the time he got here the crisis was passed. He had been passing blood and pus from the bowels. The Doctor decided when he was so sick the night before, that an abscess on the liver had broken and that Ed. was very fortunate to have such a termination of so serious a matter. He is improving every day now, and can walk about the house without his cane. I find housekeeping quite a task, but enjoy our home. * * We have had no rain for nearly nine months, and the farmers are looking very gloomy over their prospects. There is still a chance for a crop if there is rain within three months. Dear Coz. will you have our "Bellville Weekly" sent to Borden, we have only had three numbers in as many months, so one's quite lost without it. Tell us all you can think of when you write. I'll be a better correspondent in the future if will write me. ED. joins me in love to you and regards to Dr. LEE and family, Mr.. and Mrs. POTTS, and to Mrs. RIDDLE. Remember me to Em. Charles. I want to hear of Cousin DELLAH. I want to hear of everybody. Wishing you a happy new year, we are ever yours. -- H. & ED. MOORE.

Hello,
I am trying to find out/verify information whether the Lavone Katherine Miller I found in the California Death index, is the daughter of Hazel. According the index, Lavone was born August 24, 1914 and died February 21, 1995 in Fresno County, California.
I want to find out if she matches the family I am researching. The Lavone I am searching: In the 1920 census Lavone is living in Santa Clara California with her mother Hazel Barneybach (can't really read the last name) and her grandparents Jospeh Robinson and Catherine Redmond. In the 1930 census she is living with her Aunt and Uncle... Ulrich B. Pettersen and Violet C. (Robinson) Lavone is listed as adopted daughter.
If this is the same Lavone, who did she marry? Also, what happened to her mother Hazel. I am assuming by the fact that she was adopted in 1930, her mother passed away. Also who was her father.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can be reached at DeniseK711@aol.com
Thank you so much,
Take Care,
Denise
